VIDEO: Some PS2 greats return to the PS3 with a new coat of paint

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

As previously noted, several hits from not too long ago are return with some HD duds. With the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus revamps being perhaps the most exciting of the bunch..

Though I will state once again that I’m mostly annoyed by such efforts, especially with these two games in particular, since part of what made them amazing in the first place is how hard they pushed the PS2′s hardware. An affect that’s effectively lost in their return. Though the biggest point of contention is how, if you’re going to have updated visuals, you should go ALL out, instead of just upscaling textures and the like.

But such a thing could only be handled by those who actually made the originals, and these are just conversions handled by outside parties, who also did the God of War Collection, and are also doing the Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Zone of the Enders HD revamps as well. And in the case of those games, ZOE was the only one I’m still enthusiastic about, since it’ll be a chance at least for many to experience what they missed out on, to hopefully prompted a part 3.

Whereas many have already played ICO and SotC… but that was then, and this is now. And considering how many PS3s can’t play PS2 games, and how they are legitimate amazing, another chance for those who have yet to experience their wonders is not such a bad thing. First, what the new ICO looks like…

And the game originally known as “Nico” (for New ICO, get it?)…

… Once more, it hardly looks all that much different from the original games, since they looked so beautiful to begin in. Which does conflict with my whole “so they’re not going to touch up the visuals? talk about lazy” stance, but I’ve said too much, so I’ll shut up now.

What'd you think of this?
