VIDEO: Sonic Generations may not be all that bad after-all
Matt Hawkins So we finally have our first look at Sonic Generation, the 20th anniversary title coming later this year, and it doesn’t appear to be an epic train-wreck as initially feared.
How the game works is like this: you get to play as either old-school, chubby Sonic, whose levels are playable from the side, just like the good old days on the Genesis, or as the tall and slender Sonic of today, whose runs towards the screen, ever since the Dreamcast and beyond. And here’s the kicker: original Sonic’s levels will be based upon games from his time, and the same for the new deal, but as you can see from the footage above, we see the new school hedgehog running around the old man’s stomping grounds.
Does that mean we’ll get the Sonic that we can still stomach running around… come to think of it, anything past the first Sonic Adventure is so unmemorable that I can’t think of any names of locales.
It’s also been promised that there’s no annoying sidekicks, thank goodness. Originally I assumed that you’d be seeing both dudes at the same time, with one following the other, a la Tails from Sonic 2 & 3. And that you would switch back and forth, depending on the situation, sorta like in Knuckles Chaotix… Hey, remember that game, the 6 of you who also had a 32X?
Speaking of, both Sonics has skill-sets that again are reminiscent of how they behaved in their respective titles. Again, sounds totally sensible, but I’m still not convinced that some big dumb secret is waiting around the corner. Like how we discover how they have to team up to kill Sonic from the far future, or how one of them is dying of a terminal illness (sounds morbid, not any more so than Sonic Adventure 2′s plot… just YouTube the ending to see what i mean).
