VIDEO: Sony’s new TV lets two people watch different things simultaneously

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

Now that the school season is back in effect, Sony’s aforementioned display that’s intended for dorms is almost here. Though it might be just the thing for those who live with someone who’d rather watch the latest episode of Glee than you blow stuff up.

Here’s a video that shows what I mean…

I actually got the chance to test drive the new display, at a Sony press event a few weeks back, and it really works! Both me and my colleague were able to watch completely different video feeds on the same monitor!

The main selling point being used is how two players no longer have to deal with a smaller, scrunched up view of the action, though I would think it’s far more suited for two folks that live together and have completely different viewing habits.

Unfortunately it’s not perfect. First you’ve got the size of the display; at 24 inches, it’s kind of small, though I would have to assume that the 3D tech being employed is the real culprit here. Also, anything bigger would make it cost prohibitive to the intended target audience.

Though the bigger problem is, aside from having to spring for an extra pair of 3D glasses… the package is $500 and only comes with one pair… and the glasses by themselves cost another $70… is how there’s only one audio feed.

That means gamers will also need to another piece of hardware if they wish to both hear and see the action if their gf or whomever else wants to fully enjoy that new NBC sitcom with the annoying chick. But I guess that’s where Sony’s new bluetooth headset, which just came out today, comes into play!

The set comes out sometime in November and will have MotorStorm Apocalypse included. But those that pre-order it now will also get Resistance 3, which also supports 3D displays, and which also came out today as well!

What'd you think of this?
