VIDEO: The actually decent game based upon the Avengers that was never meant to be

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

For every five games that ends up crapping the bed, there’s a sixth that could have been amazing but doesn’t get the chance.

I’ll be honest: I have not been that impressed by THQ’s offerings as of late. Many of their recent games haven’t been horrible per say, like Red Faction: Armageddon or WWE All-Stars, but they haven’t been anything amazing either. At least Homefront had that ultra wacky storyline of North Korea taking over the world (which to this South Korean, is pretty much the funniest thing ever), but otherwise, it’s just the same old, same old.

So right off the back, the very idea of an Avengers game that’s entirely played in a FPS view seems different at the very least. But also not very good. Then again, perhaps many felt the same way about a James Bond game that plays in the same manner, and we all know how GoldenEye turned out.

And if THQ Australia’s game had actually been completed, it too could have been all kinds of amazing…

… Seriously, the games looks AMAZING. First person flying around as Iron Man, first person smash the crap out of stuff as Hulk, and best of all, first person tossing your shield around as Captain America, it all looks hella fun.

But alas, we’ll never know. The studio behind it, THQ Australia was shut down earlier this year due to financial reasons. And their list of credits (as seen on Wikipedia) makes that fact hardly a shock; it’s a long list of licensed crap for kids.

It’s rather obvious that the game above was something they wanted to make, whereas the low scores for the video game adaptation of Megamind and The Last Airbender indicated last than heartfelt efforts. Being a video game maker is like anything really; you’re forced to do what you don’t want to in order to make the stuff you actually dig. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out like that.
