VIDEO: The family that games together, stays together

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

It’s one thing to be a kid and get yelled at your dad for bringing home a crappy math test score. But for screwing up the family raid in World of Warcraft? Sounds like complete hell to me.

Yet that’s the existence that Ray and Ryan Santellana leads…

… I know some might find the above cute, as did Blizzard, but I find it mildly disturbing. And again, dad seems like a real douche. It also speaks of a possible future, in which dads aren’t yelling at their kids on the little league field, it’s at EVO 2031.

So time for a movie recommendation! Of all the video game documentaries out there, by far the best would have to be Second Skin (yes, even better than King of Kong, which is pretty outstanding on its own right)…

… Not only does it present MMOs and the world that surrounds them in a compelling, easy to understand, and completely fair manner, but the subjects who are as enthralling, amusing, and depressing as they come, which is what makes a good documentary work.

The four dudes who somewhat refuse to grow up are entertaining all by themselves (as well as at times infuriating, mostly when one watches how they treat their loyal women folks). Then you have the couple who met in EverQuest and then attempt to bring their romance into the real world. Their first kiss is easily the most awkward thing ever recorded on film. But they’re all trumped by the dude whose addiction to gaming becomes so bad that he almost kills himself. And then becomes a wigger.

Unfortunately it’s not on Netflix Instant anymore, but you can still nab a physical disk from them (or Qwikster, lol… still can’t get over how stupid the new name is)
