VIDEO: The numbers don’t lie, people love Mortal Kombat all over again
Sometimes a crappy game manages to rack of killer sales figures, and those of us with discerning taste wonder what is wrong with this world. But every once in a while, a good game manages to get the recognition it’s due. Of course, sporting a name that everyone knows certainly helps.
It’s been reported that the Mortal Kombat reboot has been a raging success. 3 million copies have sold thus far across the globe, making it the most successful fighting game of 2011 thus far (and it’s doubtful that anything will knock MK of its pedestal). It’s been stated that the game was a labor of love by the studio, and Destructoid quotes the game’s co-creator as saying: “Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it.”
It really is the comeback story of the year; the studio that spawned the game had been, for years, producing one subpar sequel after another, to the point of bankruptcy. Till someone realized that maybe sticking to what worked in the past might be the best coarse of action, so all the 3D movement and multiple weapons were totally tossed aside in favor of finely tuned 2D fighting. Period. And obviously the results speak for themselves.
So to mark the occasion, here are some more of those wacky secret character try out vignettes from Machinima. First we have part four, and man, when was the last time you saw anyone reference Vectorman?
And finally, part five. The final installment starts out strong, but Super Mario one immediately makes one realize “yeah, I think this joke has finally run its course”…
Alright, why the heck not, one last one from Dorkly…
