VIDEO: The Xbox 360 and PS3 still got it (or Team Ninja at least)

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

For those who are beginning to wonder if it might soon time to trade up to the Xbox 720 or the PlayStation 4, your own news still have some life in them yet.

At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which is still going on right now, I honestly expected to see the first real footage of the NEXT next gen machines (so what does that make the PS3 and Xbox 360, current gen systems? who the hell knows). And surprisingly, that’s wasn’t the case. Folks are still finding new ways to maximize current hardware, which is awesome! Not does it save us tons of cash, but that’s when the best stuff happens.

Here’s a great example. Check out this “pre-alpha” test footage of Dead Or Alive 5, which only just began development. Pay special attention to all the environmental effects (which there is a LOT)…

Now, compare that with Dead Or Alive 4, which many will recall was a launch title for the 360, almost six years ago…

When it comes to details in the character models and even the environments, there’s honestly not much a difference. But when things are moving, that’s another story.

There’s also the fact of the matter of how making ultra detailed games is just plain hard to do. So even if everyone was all of a sudden making PS4 games today, they’re not going to look all that different from today’s offerings.

Still, there will be a point, in which something new comes out, and the other person will have to match it, and next thing you know, we’re back at square one. Though the fact that Nintendo will again be at the first of that finish line… and how no one really knows what kind of punch the Wii U will punch… there’s really no way to tell what the future holds.

What'd you think of this?
