VIDEO: Those Wii U games you saw were actually from the PS3/360

The president of Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aime, admitted to GameTrailer shortly after his big presentation yesterday that some of the multi-platform games shown were actually the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Oops!

The full interview can be seen here…

… Needless to say some are upset by such a revelation. I personally am more shocked that anything else, since I believed a few were sub-PS3/360 looking at best. Tekken for the Wii U, which also looks like crap, is definitely authentic. But that Ghost Recon and ESPECIALLY Darksiders 2 footage looked bad. So I guess the egg is on my face, but also fanboys of PS3 and the 360, aka the ones pointing and laughing at Nintendo the most over it.

The reason given was simple: the hardware has just gotten into developers’ hands, and there’s really not much to show on their end. Fair enough. Anyhow, the reason why I posted the entire clip is because various other things were noted that no one else has examined, but should. Like…

1. When talking about a possible “Nintendo Network” in terms of an online infrastructure similar to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, Fils-Aime noted that he’s going to let the publishers do most of the talking on that end (not a bad idea), but it will ultimately be more “flexible” and “not as closed off”.

Huh… quite the difference between Nintendo’s ultra guarded stance, which was mostly in the benefit of the parents. Also, honestly, there’s nothing wrong with having a tightly structured online environment. Is that not why XBL works so well in the first place?

2. Once again it was stressed that the iPad-esque controller is just that, not a stand-alone (and portable) controller, but expect the range to be fairly decent. There is also no multi-touch, but given all the buttons the things has, that’s not such a big deal imho.

3. While not willing to concede that the system was a big miss among hardcore gamers (and the numbers do not lie, plus let’s be honest; most folks who sill bitch about it not having the games they wanted still probably has one, if only for Super Smash Bros Brawl), Fils-Aime did state that various publishers did not bring their games over due to the Wii not cutting the mustard horsepower-wise. It was then stated that such an excuse was now gone…

But since the Wii U is technically the first “next-gen” system, will it be able to stand toe to toe with the PlayStation 4 or Xbox 720? Or is it indeed a next generation gaming platform to being with?

What'd you think of this?
