VIDEO: Ways to make your DS more entertaining that Nintendo does not approve of

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

A bit bored with your DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL, but not willing to take the 3DS plunge till there’s more than 4 good games for the system? Well there’s a whole other world out there, which Nintendo isn’t too fond off.

Why? Because the golden ticket is a very dirty one, synonymous with the world of piracy. We’re talking about flash carts; they’re called R4s on the streets, named after the very first ones to make a splash, but there’s tons one can find if one knows where to look.

And true, for the most party, people use them to play games that they’re too much of a cheap-ass to pay for themselves. Perhaps I shouldn’t say anything, though the only games I pirate are from Japan, which have a snowball’s chance of ever coming out in the US, and because I can’t to afford the high price of importing (as much as I love collecting DS games; when I find one that I’m fond of, I try my best to nab the original).

But such cards are also the only way to enjoy homebrew games. Sometimes it’s popular PC games converted for the small screen, which were never going to get a release proper in any instance. And sometimes it’s help to bring to life various internet memes. Like Nyan Cat…

And yes, all it does is fly with that song on repeat. On a similar note, hey, remember that KFC commercial with the dude all happy cuz they brought back the Hot Wings? Unfortunately I can’t find a clip of the app in question, but one can download it via this Tiny Cart post. Just try to image this on your DS screen…

Not surprisingly, this also exists…

Meanwhile, for those who want to actually, you know, play something, how about this terrific port of Adult Swim’s awesome Robot Unicorn Attrack?

Be warned though; messing with flash carts is not the hardest thing in the world, but it can be annoying, at least if you have something other than an old school DS or Lite. Nintendo just released another firmware update for their DSi and DSi XL; was actually going to legit nab a copy of Shantae from from DSiWare Shop, but doing so would require me to update my OS and I kinda don’t want to lose the ability to play Knytt Stories DS, sorry.
