VIDEO: What ‘Quake’ & ‘Mega Man’ have to say about modern video games & modern gamers

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

Much has been said about how dumbed down games have become, an opinion I personally don’t share 100%. The following are two examples; the first does a pretty damn good job stating its case, but other validates how some gamers who have something to say are to be avoided like the plague.

Posted earlier today by 4 color rebellion, via Twitter, is a look at what a classic, hardcore offering from back in the day would be via today’s standards, which is mostly aimed at a far more “casual” audience. It includes such flourishes as an endless stream of opening splash screens, intelligence insulting DLC, overly handholding hints, and idiotic achievement, which unfortunately have become the norm…

My favorite part, btw, is the use of the Aldi logo. For those who don’t know, it’s a grocery chain in the poorest of the poor parts of the northeast; the bargains stem from the fact that there’s no shelves in the place. Everything is on the floor. And the people who shop there? Real carnival of the souls type of crowd.

But anyway, I’m fairly divided on the issue myself. I believe the above is, ultimately, a fairly exaggerated look at gaming today, which isn’t to say that there’s some truth. Sorry, but I just get so annoyed whenever anyone claims that the masses has ruined video games.

That might be true, but I’d rather everything be nice and clear that needlessly and annoyingly obtuse, especially when it’s for the sake of appeasing some elitist bunch. It’s a two way street after-all.

As much as FPSs have “suffered” from being so popular, take a look at fighting games, which are still mostly just enjoyed by hardcore fight fanatics. Which has only become more and more overly complicated and pandering with each iteration.

Hey, I said I’d be getting Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom cuz of Phoenix Wright and all, but that doesn’t mean I’ll get to enjoy it, despite my best wishes.

At least the Quake video games the point across in a fairly humorous fashion. Here’s another clip that was posted by Capcom Unity, in which on person tries to expound the virtues of Mega Man’s gameplay, again in comparison, of what we have today. But it’s done in such a douche-chilling fashion that it makes me positively embarrassed to call myself a video gamer…

I’ll PayPal anyone $10 to anyone who can actually sit through the entire thing and tell me what the point given at the end is, if there is one. After three seriously attempts, I still can’t make it past the 6:30 mark.

What'd you think of this?
