VIDEO: What the world needs is yet another way to play Angry Birds
Also, a super cheap Android tablet. Along with a bunch of other Kindles. Amazon’s full on assault against the iPad officially begins today.
Amazon has just announced the rebirth of their line of e-book readers, the Kindle, and there’s literally something for everybody. Since everyone I know is on the poor side.
First you have the brand new, baseline Kindle which is now only $79 bucks. Then there’s the Kindle Touch for $99, which as the name implies, adds a touchscreen to the mix, and the Kindle Touch 3G for $149, which further enhances the WiFi only set-up.
Though the big news is the Kindle Fire…
… It’s basically a not so powerful Android tablet, but for $200, that’s okay. It’s mostly designed to handle Amazon’s gigantic catalogue of books, music, and movies. Stuff that everyone’s first gen iPhones were able to do just fine back in the day.
Though the real deal detail is how it comes with a free month of Amazon Prime. Not only will folks be able to use the device to buy physical goods and have it shipped next day at no cost, but all the movies and tv shows Amazon has available for streaming will also be available for “free” (I put that in quotes because it’s really not; you have to have Prime).
Afterwards, you need to pay $79 for the annual membership, but considering what a bargain it is (I know tons of Prime customers and they couldn’t be happier, and that’s just with the free shipping), I have a feeling that Netflix is going to find themselves in a ton of trouble (more so than they are already).
Oh, also, it can run games. All the Android hits, such as Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, Cut the Rope, and more.
Apple zealots are all up in arms, convinced this thing will bomb, and naturally they’re totally missing the point; it’s not for them, but for poor folks, kids, and old people. Along with those who just want to read a book, watch an episode of How I Met Your Mother, and play the most overrated game that’s going right now. Which at the end of the day, is totally fine.
Personally, I’m sticking with my iPhone for all my media, with the exception of books. The default Kindle display simply cannot be beat, and that $100 Kindle is too good to pass up.
