VIDEO: When Mario and others need to take care of business, they go the Godfather route

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

It’s the heads from all the prominent video game families: Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, and Miscrosoft. And all together to face a common threat: a bunch of stupid birds...

The clip above is actually somewhat topical? As noted yesterday, Nintendo ain’t doing so hot. In fact, it’s just been reported via several outlets that not only will the 3DS be selling at loss after the price cut, but the president of Nintendo himself is taking a 50% salary cut, as way of telling everyone that it’s his fault the platform is faltering (a common practice in Japan… definitely something us Americans can learn from). Furthermore, it has also been reported that Sony’s scaling back its projected earnings as well. What does this all mean?

Again, I believe it foolish to believe that every video game company should be shaking in its boots over the iOS threat. As noted previously, there’s several reasons why the 3DS hasn’t taken off; aside from the lack of games (which is the number one reason, in my mind), is the expense of the system itself (and knowledge that the price eventually go down, which it just did), concerns over the hardware (like I keep saying, I’m waiting for a better looking design and better battery life), and even knowledge of the PlayStation Vita on the horizon. So basically, Apple is not eating Nintendo and Sony’s lunch when you get down to it.

BUT… often what is perceived, even if its not true, does in fact become reality. And if enough people believe that the iPhone and iPad will kill traditional game companies, it will happen. The biggest issue is the marketing types, the ones to make all the big decisions. They’re also the ones who are the easily swayed by public opinion. And the thought that every game just be just a dollar is simply absurd, but hey, the general public also makes some pretty wretched musicians popular and get gigantic dumbasses in political seats. At the very least, there are amazing games that just cost a buck and sometimes offer more fun than a $50 title. Like Groove Coaster, which just came out, by the makers of Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, another awesome iPhone game…

… Trust me, it’s more fun than it looks. And again, it’s just a buck!

What'd you think of this?
