VIDEO: Why Are Some Folks Pissed With Wal-Mart’s ‘Modern Warfare 3′ Ad?
Well, plenty of New Yorkers at least. Okay, a person who writes for a New York centric blog, plus some of its readers. But still.
Apologizes in advance to those reading this that does not live in the Big Apple, since I can’t see anyone outside of NYC giving a rat’s ass about the following, but here goes. Here’s the aforementioned ad by America’s biggest hub for commercial commerce featuring ‘Modern Warfare 3′. We see two pals who are fans of the game, but only is enjoying it, because he flew out to New York City, which is one time zone head of where they live, specifically to be the first one to nab a copy…
Here’s the deal: there are no Wal-Marts in NYC, at least not yet. For years the big box chain has been trying to establish a foothold in these parts, and it’s been a constant up-hill battle. Though all signs indicate that it’s only a matter of time until they arrive, with their sights squarely on the East New York section of Brooklyn. The Gothamist, who first pointed out the commercial and has long had an anti-Wal-Mart slant is not surprisingly perturbed by the “fake it ’til you make it” strategy being employed.
And the best response to their report is from a friend of a friend, via Facebook, which is how I came to find about this whole thing in the first place. Regarding the fact that the evil empire is already here, in Long Island at least…
“If he were in a hotel out by the Meadowlands, you’d have the NYC skyline in the background AND a Walmart near by. I know the writers for gothamist probably don’t leave Brooklyn often, so maybe I should let them know this.”
I’m also betting that they’re also pissed whenever evidence shows up indicating how New Yorkers are, in fact, not opposed to a Wal-Mart showing up in Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan after all. Hence why it’s head shaking, in response to the quoted YouTube response, hold a bit more weight than at first glance, since some New Yorkers are convinced that everyone who goes to Wal-Mart is a knuckle dragging, mouth breather.
Still, I can’t say I’m a fan of Wal-Mart either, since they do pander to the religious righteous. As a kid, if you wanted to get Nirvana’s latest, In Utero, Wal-Mart was the last place to go, since they forced the record company to identify the song “Rape Me” as “Waif Me”. Most of their needless censorship is contained within music, movies, and books, though it extends to video games as well.
Most recently, the cover to Atlus’s “erotic puzzle platformer”, aka Catherine, had to be toned down in order for it to be put on shelves. The original on the left, the edited version on the right. Big difference, I know, but if it save one young man from thinking about sex, then mission accomplished nonetheless!
