VIDEO: Xbox’s Indie channel is a treasure trove of wonders that is ripe for exploring

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

Pretty much anyone with an Xbox 360 has downloaded at least something from the XBLA section of the dash. But what about the Indie Games channel, just a few clicks away? It’s definitely worth exploring; the games are dirt cheap and, in some cases, absolutely insane. Oh and, sometimes actually decent as well.

The best way to describe the place is how it’s essentially the cable access of video games. The offerings definitely reflect those behind them; some clearly want to become a legit game maker, and therefor using the platform to experiment and gather feedback. Whereas others are simply crazy, with just a single idea (or “message”) that they absolutely need to share with the rest of the world, and in the form of a video game for some reason. Like how how their cat is constantly trying to eat their cereal, and f’n cute it is…

There’s so many cat games available that it’s not even funny. Hey, speaking of milk…

Many of the games, as you’ll discover, are educational. If the above is your only means of having interaction of women, have no fear, because stuff like Dont B Nervous Talking 2 Girls is here to help. Unfortunately, I was not able to find straight-forward footage of the game in action, just an overabundance of clips offering play throughs and reviews that are supposed to be funny but fail miserably. Believe it or not, this one is the last annoying…

Meanwhile, this one speaks of the dangers of excessive drinking. Or something like that…

Here’s another “review” of a “game” featuring women. It occurs to me that the anger displayed at such games is perhaps an extension of anger towards women, or the inability to attract them, hence the need to resort to a Xbox Indie title of all things to fulfill some hole in one’s life…

Semi-related, and back to Japan, here comes The Adventures of Captain Becky, you’ll play for just 30 seconds and become mortified, prompting an immediate shut down of the system. Yet you won’t be able to delete the game for some odd reason (or maybe that’s just me)…

Okay, time for the actual good stuff; there are some decent games to be found, as mentioned. Most are action romps, and many rely on (semi-tired) internet jokes, but so long as they play well, who cares?

Some are clearly rough around the edges, like above, while others are surprisingly polished, like Shooting Chicken: Revenge…

One of the bigger recent hits is the Platformance series. There’s two installments thus far, and both are well worth the download (and kicks the asses of a few XBLA offerings, quite frankly). Here’s what part one looks like…

And here’s part two…

Though without a doubt my fave offering is Streets Of Fury. If you ever once imagined of making a Final Fight/Street of Rage/Guardian Heroes clone, I’m guessing this is what you probably had in mind…

What'd you think of this?
