Google gives Apple the smackdown with great new YouTube app

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

The YouTube app that has been sitting on your iPhone has not been updated since 2007. This is for several stated reasons, but mostly because Apple is busy sulking about how Google has Android and how it’s not faaaa-aaair that Apple has to actually like compete and stuff. So you haven’t been able to watch hilarious groin injuries and terrible driving on your iPhone.

Google has just fixed this. And it. Is. Glorious.

Essentially the new iOS YouTube app is exactly the same as the Android app. This is a good thing, because the Android app is intuitive, easy to use, and can quickly get any video up and running with ease. I put it through its paces using, naturally, our very own Speed Round and found it to be pretty much a total joy to use. Where before it was clunky, busted, and unlikely to allow a decent stream, now it’s buttery smooth.

It bothers me that it’s Google that has to step into this gap. Apple has no plans to compete in online video. They left the YouTube app to gather moss out of spite. But at least Google has our backs.
