New ‘Transformers’ game lazily attempts to cash in on nostalgia
Fall of Cybertron comes out soon and it’s doing everything possible to suck up to the OG Transformers fan-base. Like recreating one of the most epic moments from the animated movie. Good idea; too bad the execution sucks.
Like many children of the 80s, I was once a diehard Transformers devotee, who has grown to not give a rat’s ass about the franchise. And not just because of the craptacular Michael Bay flicks; before he entered the picture, there had been numerous attempts at making TF games that all completely missed the mark.
The biggest problem have been the need from every game maker to mess with perfection; whether it’s ego or just poor taste, the Autobots and Decepticons always look retarded as hell. High Moon Studios, creator of the latest title, is well aware of such public sentiment. Hence the decision to give their all-new looking Optimus Prime a familiar coat of paint.
In the form of DLC, which has him resembling his original form. Why they just don’t have everyone look normal to being with is beyond me. Anyhow, someone thought it would be cute to reenact the famous moment from the movie in which he drives through rolls through the enemy. Too bad the overall execution is pathetic.
I really wish I could show the original scene as comparison, but alas, YouTube has failed me. But yeah, High Moon didn’t even try; they clearly showed their hand on this one. And for a while, I was actually interested in their title. Despite the gaudy esthetics, the vaguely Gears of War-like gameplay sounded cool, and I was simply desperate for ANY Transformer video game.
Though not after seeing the above, sorry. Hell no; can’t be that bought and sold so easily. And yes, I realize I’m getting way too worked up over this. Whatever.
