Sony has some great deals going on
PS3 owners who have laughed at the prospect of signing up to be a PlayStation Plus member may actually have a reason to finally do so.
I’ve long considered the PlayStation Plus to be somewhat pointless as well; one big bonus is getting demos early, but the PS3 barely has any to begin with, and it simply can’t compare to the Xbox 360, in which every single digital release gets a demo, period. I can also enjoy Netflix and Hulu access for free, whereas you need to be a Gold member on the 360. But since I‘ve been one for ages (like most people), it doesn’t bug me.
Point being, if you already pay for one online subscription, why another? Because Sony recently began giving Plus members free games, both PSN and full-on retail releases. Last month saw Infamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, and Just Cause 2, among others being offered. And as of today, three new titles have been added to the mix: Gotham City Impostors, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and Renegade Ops.
So you get 12 games for free, what a deal, right? Well, keep in mind that once your subscription lapses, you loose access to those titles. Basically, your plan of joining for just one month, downloading everything, and then getting the hell out of Dodge is not going to work. Sony thought of that already.
Though another bonus of a Plus membership is that you get discounts on game purchases (and anything you buy, even as a member, is kept forever). There’s also a massive PSN Summer Sale, which also kicks off today; the entire list can be seen here. Plus members get 50% normal prices, but if you’re still not convinced, non-member can get 30% off nonetheless. I highly recommend Closure and Shadow of the Colossus HD.
