The Wii U is selling like hot cakes

The Wii U looks poised to be this year’s biggest holiday hit, which is great news for those who feared that no one cares about Nintendo anymore, but bad news for those who actually wants to own one.

Earlier this weekend, I was waiting for someone at a local Gamestop, and I overheard the sales person state to a customer that if he wanted a Wii U this upcoming winter, he had put his money down and fast.

Supposedly the Deluxe Set was pretty much sold out, and only the Standard Set remained, but it extremely limited quantities. By the way, in case you weren’t aware of the two different packages, simply play catch up here.

Anyhow, I figured the Gamestop employee was making stuff up, since that’s what they do. But he wasn’t. According to various sources, including Joystiq reports that many retailers are completely out of their pre-order allotments. This includes Best Buy, Toys R Us, Target, Sears, and K-Mart.

As of this writing, Gamestop still has the Standard set yet (the dude from before was right; the Deluxe is long gone). Oh, and there’s Wal Mart, but you have to pay extra, for a bundle, that includes an extra Wii remote.

Like everyone doesn’t have six of those already, lying around the house. Otherwise, if you want the console this Christmas, your only option might be eBay. Where is where they’re apparently ending up, and being offered for an average of $700.

Turns out, Nintendo geeks aren’t the ones who have been snatching them up, but douchebag resellers. Gotta love console launches!
