Unfortunately for the St. Louis Cardinals, Adam Wainwright’s season appears over before it even started. The 20-game winner and runner-up for the NL Cy Young last year hurt his elbow and may need Tommy John surgery to repair it. If so, he’ll need at least a full year to recuperate. The name Marshon Brooks probably isn’t on your radar but after last night’s performance, it will be now. The Providence guard scored 52 points in a loss to Notre Dame 93-92. The offensive explosion was a Big East record and ironically Brooks scored more points than the entire Depaul team did last night in a loss at St. John’s. Surprisingly, Brooks only shot 10 three-pointers the whole game as most of his shots were from inside the arc. Truly an awe inspiring performance.

Former NBA great Elgin Baylor is currently in a heated lawsuit with Sterling and the organization because he felt that he was fired due to his age and race. Court documents were released recently in the case and yea, suffice to say they don’t paint Sterling in a positive light.

Neither will this story about Sterling heckling some of his own players, most notably point guard Baron Davis.

Sterling “started getting a lot more vocal during the second half of last season,” one team source said. “He never had done that before at games. Baron’s his pet project. He absolutely hates Baron. He wants to get his money back.”

While Davis wouldn’t confirm Sterling’s criticism, those close to the point guard said it’s taking a strong toll on him. One member of the organization who wished to remain anonymous expressed disappointment in Sterling’s lack of support for Davis and the players.

“The owner of the team has to be the main supporter of the team and the staff,” the source said. “And when the owner of the team isn’t supporting the players, it doesn’t give you confidence to play the way you want to. This guy is supposed to be on your side, not against you. You want someone who can support what you’re doing and be on your side.”

I’m almost at a loss for words. I thought nothing would surprise me from that crotchety old fool, but openly booing and calling out your employees reeks of an Ebenezer Scrooge-Bob Cratchit sequel. Not to say that Baron Davis hasn’t been a disappointment or has, at times, made one too many visits to the buffet line. That said, calling him into your office seems to be the more humane way of handling it.

I hate to say it, because I don’t necessarily endorse his method of coddling players, but Sterling could learn a thing or two from fellow owner Marc Cuban. He may not win championships but at the very least, guys respect him and are willing to play harder for him. Needless to say, after reading this story, Baron Davis and his teammates don’t feel the same way about old man Sterling.

Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb didn’t get support from his offensive line Sunday and now it appears he’s not getting it from the coaching staff either. One day after being pulled in favor of Rex Grossman in the late stages of the Lions game, coach Mike Shanahan told the media that McNabb simply isn’t in good enough shape to lead the team during the two-minute drill. Listen, it might have been kosher if that was Elway or Montana coming off the bench to relieve you. But Rex Grossman? To avoid embarrassment, I fully expect Donovan to call it a career today citing major injury.

Arian Foster tried his damndest to duplicate his offensive output in the first game of the season against the Colts. But his 167 total yards last night in a 30-17 loss were no comparison to his 231 on the ground earlier in the year. Had it not been for Foster though, the Texans may have not done any damage on the offensive end. Quarterback Matt Schaub was continually pressured all game long resulting in three sacks and countless hurries and knockdowns.
