Get ready for the Cascore revolution, which seeks to bring both groups together, and have them play as one. And who’s the genius behind this movement? Why Peter Molydeux! Not Peter Molyneux, the man responsible for Fable and other Lionhead titles, aka gaming’s equivalent to PT Barnum…

Peter Molydeux is actually a parody Twitter account, which pokes fun at the real deal’s hyperbole. He’s quite the hit amongst gaming industry types, but I’m pretty sure anyone can enjoy the fake game designer’s fake game ideas. Here’s another, in which you actually assume the role of Peter Molyneux himself, aka God’s gift to video games. And who will make you believe that a tree can help you fly into outer space…

BTW, some have noticed that the Cascore title has more than a passing resemblance to Suda 51′s Diabolical Pitch, which also combines casual gameplay… in this case, throwing an imaginary baseball, a la Wii Sports… and killing zombies. Though Peter Molydeux has a reason for that…

So I came across this not too long ago, on a site that specializes in Japanese video game news…

My initial thought was “only in Japan!” But lo and behold, it’s a game that came out in America first (yes, the fact that it’s all American teams should have been my first clue… sorry, but I don’t know jack about baseball). Earlier this summer to be precise, on Xbox Live…

After some light searching, reviews are on the favorable side! What appears to be a license heavy, but that’s about it, version of the baseball activity from Wii Sports is a full deal game with a certain degree of depth and finesse! It doesn’t have all the hardcore features that a major league sim has, but for about $10, one can’t complain.

Unfortunately, no PS3 version is available, far as I can tell (via PSN’s sh*t interface). Which means your only option is to import that Japanese version, which is a retail release, and costly about 4 times more, and that’s BEFORE accounting for shipping and handling and other import fees. lol, Sony.

Since we crank out so many stories each week some really good ones get lost in the cracks. And since so many new people visit Guyism every day (thank you), we thought we’d take some time on the weekends to share a few classics that many of our newer readers may have missed.

Cue Europe’s The Final Countdown. In a few weeks, summer will come to a screeching halt. Shorter days, a drop in mercury, and being bombarded with a string of holidays that will require 1) the emptying of pockets and 2) spending too much quality time with the extended family is really all you have to look forward to. Oh, and let’s not forget school for the luckiest among us. (Rushing! Textbooks! Incoming freshmen!) If you feel like your summer flew by and you didn’t have the slightest bit of fun, don’t fret. Instead of grieving in despair for summer’s death, make the most of this last month with our to-do list.

7 Do Something Baseball-Related
And we mean something outside with baseball. Watching a game — or worse, playing a baseball-themed video game — on an HD TV in your musty-smelling living room does not count. The most obvious choices would be going to a baseball game or playing baseball, preferably while staying hydrated with watery beers. And be sure to stuff your face with deliciously processed stadium food. If you don’t like baseball—screw you! It’s America’s summer staple sport.

6 Swim — in Anything
Remember when you used to spend all summer at the pool? Sure, our babysitters probably just took us there so they could lay out and read magazines while we left them alone, but we miss those days. Unless you are deathly afraid of water and fun, we guarantee you will be one sad, repressed soul if you don’t swim at all this summer. Plan a beach or pool visit, or just fill up a kiddie pool and have a beer. Kick around—there, that counts as swimming. Check.

5 Go to a Festival
We don’t know what the hell you’ve been up to all summer if you haven’t attended a festival. No matter where you are, these past few months have been ripe with music, cultural, or food festivals. But it’s okay (we guess) if you’ve made a bunch of lame excuses and haven’t been able to attend any. Use this last month to really figure out what’s going on in your city or surrounding ones. Pack a backpack with a blanket and a well-hidden flask, and you’re good to go—even if it’s just a Dutch-themed flower festival nearby.

4 See a Summer Blockbuster
Yes, going to the movies is, for whatever reason, insanely expensive now. Suck it up. Odds are, everyone’s already talking about that amazing movie you didn’t see and are planning on watching when it comes out on Netflix. But there’s something about the movie experience that doesn’t compare to your lonely, boxer-wearing soul sitting on a sofa watching a flick on your overheated laptop. Splurge on at least one movie ticket (or two, plus popcorn and soda if you’re on a date. Points will be scored). Just don’t see anything that rhymes with “the Fast Bear Lender.” You will have wasted your money.

3 Take a Mini-Vacation
Whatever town you’re in at this very minute: get out. And get out of there for at least two nights. Go and stay with that friend you’ve been planning on visiting for too long (just make sure the invite still stands), or check out discount travel sites for hotel deals. A road trip may seem like a thriftier choice than flying, but sometimes it can be a money burner, so do your research. You can sometimes get great day- or week-of tickets airlines. Also, subscribe to these sites’ newsletters—they’ll give you a heads up when there are cheap trips to cities you’ve wanted to check out. More bus routes are also becoming available across the country, and some tickets are just $25 round trip. If the idea of scrambling around to have a last-minute getaway stresses you out, at least start planning a trip for September—maybe it’ll make the summer go by slower, and you’ll have something to look forward to.

2 Have a Quickie Fling
If your summer lovin’s been a-lacking, now’s your final chance—have that a pseudo-summer fling with a special someone. Hell, choose anyone at this point. (Beggars can’t be choosers.) Preferably go with someone who will be attending college in the fall. Maintaining that sort of romance is always doomed from the start, which will be great for your allocated timetable. Go on at least two amazing dates, including one that involves getting snow cones, before having the, “let’s just keep having fun and not get too serious,” talk.

1 See the Sun, Already
Not all of us have had the glowing opportunity to hit the beach every day or tag along when our private school roommate’s parents pay for all their friends to vacay in Cabo. (Assholes). Some of us have been slaving away in cubicles all summer, making the sun—and consequently, any form of tan—a total myth. To avoid sticking out like a pasty-white Trekkie on the cast of Jersey Shore, spend this month making it a priority to soak in some rays. Grab that happy hour brew on places with patios instead of in dimly-lit watering holes. Be that guy who passes out with his dog shirtless on the grass after playing Frisbee golf. If you get desperate, jump in a tanning booth — but your ass will most likely get burnt if you’re pale — or have your girlfriend help you apply fake tanner (there was a how-to help your man do so in the latest Cosmo. For real).

The YouTube video description claims that the kid is ten years old and made $33, primarily from a bus full of drunk frat boys who came to the game on a party bus. Way to know your audience, kid. If there’s any body who’s going to drunkenly gravitate towards mediocre hip movements and dubious parenting, it’s a bunch of frat boys. They’d never be able to get off without great appreciation for both of those things.

But the Padres and Taylormade Golf teamed up for a pretty fantastic little promotion out at PETCO.

Er, actually, “little” is a terrible word — the foul pole is a actually gigantic R-11 driver, Taylormade’s newest product.

The head of the club isn’t “real,” but is painted on the wall at the stadium. The shaft, however, is very much real, is 80-feet tall, weighs 960 pounds, and is positioned squarely in right field.

Even better, the marketing geniuses — and whether or  not I said “geniuses” to draw in some lurking PR person who’s interested in sending me a golf club to demo is really none of your business — decided to to create a time-lapse video out of the project, which is below.

It’s quite cool, really.

And an impressive way to create a partnership between a sports team and a big, relevant brand in today’s economy.

“The launch of the R11 driver has become larger than life for our industry, so we wanted to continue the momentum with a larger than life integration with the San Diego Padres,” said Mark King, president and CEO of TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company in a release.

But put your opinions aside for a few minutes and enjoy what Kevin Zelko’s doing at Mariners’ baseball games: taking beer orders via Twitter.

A beer vendor for the M’s, Zelko’s doing yeoman’s work to revolutionize the sale of suds at Safeco with his Twitter account @MsBeerVendor.

“Since the beginning of beer vendors, we’ve been walking up and down the aisles seeing who wants a beer, I’m going to try to change that,” Zelko said in an interview he did with CNBC’s Darren Rovell.

The numbers, in terms of sales are pretty good: 80 beers ($125 in tips) on a normal weekday game and 100 beers (~$200 in tips) on weekends.

Folks are embracing it, as fans have actually tweeted things like “Can’t wait to head to the park on Friday and order with @MsBeerVendor!” (That’s actually fake, but you get the point.)

“I come from a family of stockbrokers,” said Zelko, who’s a teacher for special-needs children during the day. “Selling things is easy for us.”

Fortunately for him, beer’s an easy sell at baseball game. In fact, there’s really no reason why more ballparks shouldn’t hop on board with Zelko’s idea. (Or whether some enterprising person should patent an iPhone app that lets you order beer at a certain park …)

Really, the only problem is the fact that wireless service, regardless of the provider, always seems to fail whenever you get in a crowd of more than 10,000 people.

Added bonus: getting it on your phone is stupid simple.

I tried it on my iPhone and it took all of about 10 seconds to get rolling. Yes, for those that will make an obvious point, it is in fact simply a bookmark. But the nice thing is it’s a bookmark that gets a nifty little logo and it lets you go straight to the BBR mobile site, which has been significantly beefed up to improve user experience.

The mobile navigation is particularly crucial — typically speaking a Sports Reference site is almost impossible to work with on a touchscreen, because it requires so many drop-downs, etc. The new format is a substantial upgrade.

And, of course, those drop-downs always correlate to finding the stats you want. Now it’s entirely possible to manage that navigation without getting completely lost and/or mishitting something with your chubby fingers.

In short, it’s a fantastic upgrade all around and a simple way of accessing every single possible baseball box score you could possibly want without actually having to download an unwieldy application or sifting through a difficult-to-use full version of a site.

But it has NOTHING on Sportscenter anchor Steve Berthiaume’s dedication to “MLB The Show.” As Berthiaume recently wrote for ESPN, one of his main hobbies in life going back through and creating historical baseball players in the modern-day video game.

That sounds kind of simplistic — create a character, make him really tall, give him a swanky mustache, a killer fastball and name him Dennis Eckersley — but the extent to which Berthiaume goes to make these guys is borderline insane.

Let’s say Berthiaume wants to recreate Mel Ott (seen above).

Instead of using “Create Player” mode, he goes with “Edit Player” mode, and uses bottom-of-the-barrel minor leaguers in order make his historical recreations.  Then he gets really nuts, by researching current baseball players with similar attributes to Ott, in order to figure out the best possible way to accurately project his rankings.

Ott hit .273 in 1979, but he was a .259 career hitter, so to find three accurate matches, I trended toward lower averages rather than higher ones to find sets that matched. Once you find three good examples from the previous season, go back into the game and get those players’ corresponding “attribute rating numbers” in each category. To do that, go to “Options” and select “Edit Player.” Then scroll to the appropriate team, select the player you’re looking for and choose “Edit Player” on the “Player Options” banner. Scroll through to the “Batting Attributes” heading and find the player’s “rating number” for the attribute you need. Here are the “attribute numbers” for a video game Ed Ott from last season, using 2009 actual player statistics.

Ryan Church, B/L — .273, 359 AB, 98 H; right contact +72; left contact +43
John Baker, B/L — .271, 373 AB, 101 H; right contact +74; left contact +48

Berthiaume does this across the board, too. Obviously Ott isn’t some combo of Church, Baker and Gardner; they just happen to have a similar contact rate from the left side.

So Berthiaume finds a group of players with a similar plate discipline, a similar stolen base percentage, etc., etc., and then puts all of that together to create Ott.

Oh yes, and he also researches the batting stance of each person and then sifts through the full list of stances in order to find one that matches it most closely (“Generic Batting Stance 90″ gets it done for Ott).

The whole process is bananas, and that’s not even discussing what he does with pitchers, which is beyond insane, because it involves researching the different velocity and break of each pitchers separate pitches.

So, yeah, I recommend reading the whole piece. Not only will you have a different level of nerd respect for Berthiaume, but you’ll have a fantastic excuse for why you don’t actually spend too much time on the Xbox.

Taking an Inside Look at ‘MLB The Show’ – [ESPN]

In fact, he’s the jam, and I imagine, having just seen the announcement, that his “Bill James Baseball IQ” iPhone and iPad application will be equally as awesome. (But probably less hermit-y and curmudgeon-y. And with a shorter beard.)

That’s primarily because it looks amazeballs based on the sneak preview he gave on Actasports.com of the old “K Zone.” Witness, for instance, Carl Crawford’s strikeouts from 2010.

As you can see, Carl Crawford struck out 104 times and did nearly every time on a low and away pitch. This isn’t necessarily breaking news so much as it is so freaking awesome that us normal peon-folk will be able to access it via an iPhone or iPad.

Just because I like these pictures (and for comparisons sake), here’s Carlos Pena’s strikeouts from 2010.

Nothing different (and, by the way, does it seem like there’s an RBI Baseball type of design going on here?) except for the K total and how Pena struck out, but it does give a better idea of just how intricate the breakdown is for each batter.

Unfortunately, the app isn’t out yet — Acta says it’ll be out “early this spring.” So until then you’ll have to make due with a protractor.

It’s almost NFL season. “Almost” being the operative word in that sentence. The countdown begins as we inch hour by hour to the September 9th kick-off of another glorious season of professional football. It’s almost too hard to take when it’s this close, so here are a few things you can do to burn some time between now and the start of the season.

10 Fantasy drafts
Sure, not everyone likes playing fantasy football and some people even hate the guy that comes over on Sundays and vehemently complains when Jonathan Stewart gets the goal line carry in lieu of DeAngello Williams (“Serenity now!”) or completely loses his mind during every Tony Romo fumble, but it gives you a reason to look up stats and get your brain ready for talking serious statistical analysis come mid-September. You’re familiar with how players fared last year and you know that Mike Martz and Jay Cutler together is probably going to go down like the Hindenburg. It may not be something you stick with the entire year, but it gives you a good jumping off-point.

9 Pre-season football
You never get to watch your favorite players for more than a few series and sometimes you can tell the guys are just going through the motions. It’s sort of like the real season, yet it just doesn’t feel right to the rabid fans. Preseason is simply a tease — like a Hooters next to a strip club that opens in an hour . Sure the girls at Hooters are probably much better looking, but at the end of the hour, no matter how much money you spend, you’re not going to get to see what you really came to see. At some point you go next door and blow the rest of your cash on the real thing.

8 Watch the NFL Network
NFL news and stats all day for the next six months. You get breakdowns of every team, the top quarterbacks, every defense and their weakness — the NFL Network at this point in time is like an introductory class to the 2010 NFL season. They also play most of the preseason games and give you up to the minute news because all they do is cover NFL football. Just sit there and get informed as you rock back and forth on your recliner, biting your nails and wishing for September 9th to roll around.

7 Watch baseball
A lot of folks like baseball, but at this point it just makes some people angry and more antsy for football season, But if it works for you — by all means.

6 Go play football
The weather is starting to get a little cooler and a lot of recreational flag-football leagues are starting, meaning that you can go burn off some energy and time while doing your best Ochocinco impression. So get out your gold fronts and go throw the ball around or teach your kid or girlfriend to throw a tight spiral or how to spear someone without getting flagged. Remember to get as much exercise as you can because come football season because a lot of your Sundays may not be for playing football and getting exercise; it’ll be about drinking beer, eating wings and screaming at the television.

5 Spruce up the Man Cave
Make sure wherever you’re planning to do most of your Sunday football watching is in tip-top shape for the upcoming season. Make sure your TV’s settings are at optimal capacity for football viewing. If you need another smaller TV to put in the room so you can watch two games at once, make sure you are set up for that. Also make sure that new kegerator you bought for the basement is up and running at maximum efficiency. Give the room a few trial runs to make sure when your buddies come over that you’re primed, beered and ready to spend your afternoon in your “Cave.”

4 Go gamble on pee-wee games
I’m just joking! Everybody knows that pee-wee season starts a few weeks after the NFL season, so you can’t go gamble on the games, ha ha. But now would be a good time to scout. See which teams looks strong, talk to coaches, finds the fastest players and make note of it. What? Oh, I’m the bad guy? Look around people, it’s the only pure, untainted level of sports left… Plus you get pretty good odds.

3 Make sure you got “The Ticket”
Call up the folks at DirecTV and make sure you are all fixed up and ready to roll. Get the Superfan package and you get all the games in HD, you get the Red Zone Channel, The Game Mix Channel with eight games at once, fantasy tracking for like 20 players and of course, DVR, so you can watch that replay of Ray Lewis blowing up Jake Delhomme over and over and over again until it gets old or they come back from commercial break. If you can’t afford Sunday Ticket, you can spend this time finding somewhere that can and drawing straws for designated driver.

2 Go check out the gambling odds
Some people can just watch football and be content just watching football. Others need to spice things up a bit by gambling on the games. If you are one of those people it’s probably a good idea to start checking out futures bets and odds on the first week of games. Obviously you don’t want to get to cavalier about betting because we still have some preseason games left that could lead to injuries, but it’s always good to have a decent grasp on what’s going on and what the spread may end up being for that first week. Not that I would know or that I would have a favorite site or gamble on anything…

If this had happened already, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion, we’d be watching football right now!

I’ve always wondered how an announcer would feel having to cover a horrendous team, day in and day out. You’d think we’d see some more books about this. It has to make you feel like you’re not accomplishing a whole lot in your life too. It’s not like anything you could do would help the Indians play better so you’re kind of trapped in this veritable “Groundhog’s Day” of crappy baseball, forced to act like it’s interesting so the fans will keep tuning in. Can’t be fun.

That said, I like to imagine Jhonny Peralta heard about this and said, “What? Bruce said that about me? Really?” Then he acted like he didn’t care and was like, “Whatever man, what does he know.” But he went home and cried just a little. Maybe even cut himself. The pain makes him feel like he’s less of a terrible player.

Most of the time, we prefer our athletes to be warm, smiling characters. Look at LeBron James; the guy is 6’8 and packs 250 pounds but you would have no problem approaching him on the street. He just looks like a nice guy. This list is not for guys like that. Contained below are the most frightening, snarling athletes that the general public would do well to avoid like their lives depend on it.

1 Mike Tyson

You don’t get the nickname “The Baddest Man on the Planet” by being a nice guy. In his heyday, Mike possessed a rare combination of speed, knockout power, and blood lust. He’s broken opponent’s orbital bones, bit off ears, spent time in prison. You name the act, and Mike has committed it with the unapologetic rage of a wild man. If you’re not completely convinced by now, simply go look up videos of his interviews. His mere presence has even the most steadfast reporters shivering. Plus, the guy tried to take out Little Mac!

2 Serena Williams

For years everyone had their suspicions that the younger sister was secretly a psychotic super athlete. Just watch her play tennis. She hits the ball like it owes her money, screaming out a war cry with each stroke. She’s also got biceps that look like they were infused to her body during a lab experiment. But the confirmation of many people’s fears came during last year’s U.S. Open final. Disputing a call, she stormed over to the female line judge and threatened to “Shove this **** ball down your ***** throat.” Yikes.

3 Ray Lewis

Some athletes have the ability to act like complete gentlemen off the field but turning into monsters while on it. Ray Lewis is one of those men. From his maniacal pre-game ritual that looks straight out of a Tongan death dance. If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to his pre-game speeches they kind of sound like this: “RAARR! KILL! FOOTBALL! NO MERCY!!” Ok fine we might have embellished that a little bit. On the field, ferocity of his hits are so intense that many find themselves marveling at the fact that anyone gets up afterwards.

4 Scott Parker

In a sport that demands toughness out of all of it’s athletes, Scott Parker shone as the one of the toughest. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but Scott Parker is exactly what he looks like: a rough dude that can snap at any moment. During one game, Parker was so incensed that he slammed his stick against the penalty box glass and got himself ejected. But before he could be led off the ice, he jumped onto the glass between the two team’s benches and started hitting an opposing player in the face. Now retired, Parker runs a barber shop business with his wife. Who in the world would trust him with scissors?

5 Albert Belle

Baseball is not the first sport that comes to mind when thinking of intimidating athletes. However, Albert Belle has been a special case his whole career. From throwing a ball at a fan who was taunting him during a game, to hitting a would-be vandal with his car, Belle was a man without fear or mercy. But it wasn’t just opponents and fans who feared his wrath. He reportedly took a bat to teammate Kenny Lofton’s boombox after a particularly poor at-bat. Looks like someone needed a hug badly. Volunteers?

6 Bernard Hopkins

By nature, most professional fighters are intimidating human beings. Hopkins takes the cake as one of the last guys you want staring across the ring from you in a match. Coming from the tough streets of Philadelphia, Hopkins was born rough, beating up and stealing money from older kids. Hopkins didn’t discover his love for boxing at a gym like most people, he began boxing while serving a prison sentence for multiple felonies. In the ring, Hopkins doesn’t really knock his opponents out as much as he saps their will with his bullying and counter punching. He does all of this with the countenance of a hired killer.

7 Lawrence Taylor

How many careers have you ended today? None? Oh well, you must be a normal person; unlike our next athlete Lawrence Taylor. The former Giants pass rusher was an absolute berserker on the field, seemingly with the intent to literally put them through the ground. Opposing offensive coordinators eventually had to adapt to LT’s blitzkrieg. His most infamous hit was during the 1985 season where he hit Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann so badly that Theismann broke his leg, forcing him into retirement.

8 Randy Johnson

The fact that this guy is nicknamed the Big Unit and no one thought to make fun of the guy for it (at least to his face) says a lot. Johnson stood 6’10 and rocked one of the most complete mullet/goatee combinations ever seen in sports. Imagine standing in a batter’s box seeing a guy like that throw 90+ mph fastballs in your general direction. In one particular incident, an unfortunate bird flew in the way of one of Johnson’s pitches. The bird quite literally exploded into a mess of feathers and blood. If it weren’t downright frightening, it would almost be kind of beautiful.

9 Wanderlei Silva

One does not get the nickname the “Axe Murderer” by being nice and cuddly. Silva reigned as the PRIDE middleweight champion for years, leaving a trail of would-be challengers unconscious in a pool of their own blood. A whirlwind of knees, elbows, and stomps Silva lives for the knockout. His epic pre-fight staredowns are by far the scariest in the sports of mixed martial arts. Just try to watch a clip of him without peeing your pants a little.

10 Brock Lesnar

Normal people do not have giant swords tattooed on their chests. It’s safe to say that the current UFC Heavyweight champ is not a normal person, but a genetic freak of a man. In the ring, Lesnar becomes an absolute killer with no remorse. Just ask Frank Mir whom Lesnar pinned against the cage hitting him repeatedly with hammerfists. Afterwards he still got in Mir’s face and let him know just who the alpha dog is. Lesnar, a former NCAA and WWE wrestling champion, spends his free time secluded in the woods hunting wild game and presumably running rampant on small villages.

Holly Madison was out doing what she does, appearing at various events, looking sexy, promoting things. This time it was in Las Veags at Cashman Field tossing out the first pitch for the Las Vegas 51s. No offense to Barack Obama and memo to all Major League Baseball teams, but I think I’d rather see this at any opening day I ever attend in the future. She probably threw a better first pitch than Obama as well. She definitely has better ‘form’.

You know, it’s a good thing we have celebrities to prove to us that even though it’s Winter and the weather sucks where many of us live, there are still places like the Turks and Caicos Islands where people with lots of money can go and play on the beach in bikinis. Without people like Dancing with the Stars’ Karina Smirnoffwe wouldn’t properly know much to hate our lives. By the way, when did Karina start dating Cardinals pitcher Brad Penny anyway (the guy she is playing catch with)? And how does that dude pull so much trim? Oh yeah. He’s a rich athlete. Duh. My bad.
