Despite having zero familiarity with sports, even I know that the Chicago Cubs are a sad sack team that hasn’t won the World Series in 103 years. So I have to wonder if MLB 12 The Show‘s commercial will make Cubs fans smile wistfully or scream bloody murder.

Again, due my complete and utter lack of first-hand knowledge regarding sports (hey, that guy who prayed a lot, is he still in the news?), I must rely upon Twitter and YouTube comments to answer the question above. And despite a few “Sony totally trolled us” sentiments, most love the spot.

Totally wasn’t expecting that! In fact, there’s more than a few in which the respondent has claimed that it made them cry. These are grown men I’m assuming. Jesus, you sports fans are WEIRD.

Tennis great Pete Sampras was robbed of most of his tennis memorabilia three weeks ago. The 14-time Grand Slam winner said only one of those trophies was stolen but that his Olympic ring and most of the prizes from his 64 titles were taken. Sampras kept them in a public storage facility because he simply didn’t have room for them. There are no leads yet in the case.

8

Eight days after Iowa WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos made first team All-Big Ten, he’s been arrested for running a drug house. Yea, quite a change of scenery from a football field. In the search of his residence, police found cocaine, marijuana, and prescription drugs along with $3k in cash. Apparently, the scholarship money he was getting did not tide him over.

4

The Washington Redskins were finally so fed up with Fat Albert Haynesworth that they suspended him the rest of the season (4 games). According to the team, Haynesworth was not on speaking terms with coach Mike Shanahan and wouldn’t play in certain packages. “Despite the club’s numerous attempts to persuade Albert Haynesworth to abide by the terms of his contract, he has repeatedly refused to cooperate with our coaching staff in a variety of ways over an extended period of time.”

10,000,000

In a case of “while you were sleeping”, Carlos Pena signed a one year deal with the Chicago Cubs for $10 million dollars sometime late last night. Pena hit .196 with 28 HR and 84 RBI for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010. I’ll have to check the record books but I believe that is the largest contract signed by anybody who had an average below the Mendoza line.

.50

You’ll have to excuse my ignorance as to the details of the McCourt-L.A. Dodgers ownership issues. Every day there is a new plot twist and frankly, I just can’t keep up. Yesterday a judge ruled that Jamie McCourt did in fact own 50% of the team and now it seems like the only possible way for this to be resolved is the team being sold to a third party. On a side note, if you ever want to see a live, in-person definition of greed, look these two up.

Around 40 minutes after MSU coach Mark Dantonio beat Notre Dame on an unbelievable fake field goal in overtime, he experienced tightness in his chest. His wife, not wanting to take any chances drove him to nearby Sparrow Hospital where it was revealed that Dantonio had suffered a heart attack. A heart-stopping play both on the field and off apparently. Dantonio had surgery to block the clogged artery and is out indefinitely.

4

Last year, Brett Favre supporters claimed he had changed his game and wasn’t the “gun slinger” he once was. They certainly had the stats to back them up. Favre threw a career low 7 ints in 2009. Two games into the 2010 season, he’s already thrown 4. Probably should have just stayed home and hunted armadillos.

In the much anticipated match-up between the Jets and Patriots, one quarterback emerged with an astounding 124.3 rating. And no, it was not the man who is a 2-time Super Bowl MVP and sports Gisele Bundchen on his arm. Mark Sanchez arguably had the game of his career in the Jets win yesterday. His 3 touchdowns and 21 completions were both career highs.

28 years ago today, NFL players walked out for an incredible 57 days before finally returning to work. The regular season was shortened to 9 games and NBC decided to air CFL games as replacement programming during the lockout. As usual, it was the fans who were hurt the most. By God, if I have to watch this next year, I may gouge my eyes out before Thanksgiving.

.254

Tyler Colvin was having a successful rookie campaign with the Cubs. .254 average with 20 HRs and 56 RBIs. But those will be his “end of the year” statistics for 2010. Colvin was rounding third when a teammates’ splintered bat impaled near his collarbone. He was rushed to a nearby Miami hospital where he will remain for several days to prevent a collapsed lung. Needless to say, he is out for the remainder of the season.

37

Numbers of days left before the Nuggets’ regular season opens at home against Utah. Will Carmelo Anthony be on that squad? Rumors have been swirling for weeks that Anthony would be traded with Chicago as the likely destination. But thus far, the rumors have amounted to nothing.

1357

The last time Michael Vick started a game for a NFL team, Dec 31st 2006. 1357 days later, Vick led the Eagles to a 35-32 win over the Detroit Lions—and he looked good doing it. In fact, he looked like he hadn’t lost a step avoiding several sacks with his patented speed. 284 yards in the air, 37 on the ground and 2 Tds. Andy Reid says he doesn’t have a quarterback controversy on his hands, but some might beg to differ.

In Sammy Sosa’s 13 years with the Chicago Cubs, he hit 545 home runs. That comes to around 42 dingers a season. It’s quite an impressive feat, no doubt. It’s made much less impressive when you consider that it came during baseball’s “steroid era”. Sosa may have never tested positive per se but most people with even a modicum of intelligence will tell you they think he was one of the bigger users around. When you combine that with his corked bat incident, then you probably understand why the Cubs are more than weary to honor him. And that makes Sosa upset.

Sosa tells Chicago Magazine for a story in its September issue that his “number should be untouchable because of the things that I did for that organization.”

Rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin is wearing No. 21 for the Cubs this season.

I can only speak personally but I’m more than willing to give Sosa a pass here. First of all, as evidenced from his congressional hearing, the man can barely understand English, let alone speak it. Secondly, he has a serious medical condition. How else can you explain the black-white transformation he underwent last year?
