When it comes to your morning beverage, you’ve got two options: the French press, or the paper filter. The paper filter is easy to clean and simple to use, but it also removes certain aromatic oils and flavor compounds that let you get the most out of your coffee. The French press, meanwhile, is a pain in the ass to clean and will sometimes leave grounds in your coffee, but it’s some tasty, tasty stuff.

The solution: MORE FILTERS!

We’ll let this video explain how it works:

Or, if you don’t want to watch: it includes two filters. One gets into the grounds, churning up all those oils and other tasty things you want out of a decent cup of joe, while the other filter keeps the grounds out. In addition, the Espro is designed to keep your coffee hot, so you can leave the press sitting around for a little bit.

Especially nice? The design has both a large, four-cup version and a small one-cup version, which allows you to enjoy your coffee at home and at work. And also probably come off as an intolerable coffee snob, but once you get that first dose of sweet, sweet caffeine, you won’t care.

Currently, a four-cup pot is $85 over at the Espro Press Kickstarter page, and $150 gets you the large and small.

When people decry lawyers and frivolous lawsuits, fairly or not, the first thing they point to is the 1994 “hot coffee being spilled on an old lady’s lap” suit that ended up settling for about $600,000. But people continue to be incompetent, so finally, we can relive the excitement: Another woman, this time in Oregon, is suing McDonald’s for the exact same thing.

According to the suit, “as it was being handed to her by an employee of the defendant, the plaintiff took the cup of coffee and the plastic top fell off and spilled very hot coffee on plaintiff’s upper right leg…”

She went into “nervous shock,” endured pain and has scarring. She seeks $7,182 for her pain and suffering, plus another $318 for lost wages and medical expenses.

I’m not going to say the woman is completely at fault…I’ve gotten stuff from fast food places where the lid hasn’t been on tightly enough, leading to spillage, more than enough times. Annoying, certainly. Given that knowledge and the generally accepted convention that coffee tends to be hot, I might want to exercise some caution when taking coffee from a fast food place. Grabbing the coffee from the simpletons and then swinging it around as if I were having a sword fight with one of the Three Musketeers seems like I’m just asking for my testes to be burned alive like my neighbors on Elm Street suspected me of doing bad things with their kids.

UPDATE: For more info on the original 1994 law suit, I recommend checking out this article on the suit (provided by commenter “Kungfu”) which shows that it was less frivolous than the public perceived it as both then and now.

You know what I always think my coffee needs? Bare breasts. Finally, a reason to ever want to go to Maine!

A topless coffee shop that raised the ire of many residents of a small central Maine town is open for business.

The Grand View Topless Coffee Shop, located at the site of the former Grand View Motel, opened its doors Monday on busy Route 3 in Vassalboro. A sign outside says, “Over 18 only.” Another says, “No cameras, no touching, cash only.”

On Tuesday, two men sipped coffee at a booth while three topless waitresses and a bare-chested waiter stood nearby. Topless waitress Susie Wiley said men, women and couples have stopped by.

Dozens of residents objected to the shop when the Vassalboro planning board meeting took up the matter last month. But town officials said the coffee shop met the letter of the law.

This is good for the guys and all, but I don’t know how I’d feel as a woman working in the coffee place. Like I don’t want there to be a potential direct correlation between how bad I am at my job and how likely I am to get scalding coffee thrown at my nipples.

At least it’s not a bottomless coffee shop. If you’ve drank one cup of coffee laced with yeast infection drippings, you’ve drank ‘em all.
