We don’t often hit on the business of sports blogs here, but we’d feel remiss if we didn’t pass on this article from GQ about Deadspin editor A.J. Daulerio. It’s definitely worth the read. In it, Daulerio discusses the $12,000 Gawker paid for pictures of Brett Favre’s penis last year. Yes, the dong which many of us mentioned for weeks/months on end and which ultimately cost Favre $50k was due to the hard work of Deadspin . The $12,000 ended up being an incredible investment as the story did well over five million page views.

Roger Federer needed five sets to defeat a man he had never beaten before. Yes, Federer was 0-2 against Frenchman Gilles Simon and is the only player on tour Federer has a losing record against. Roger probably thought his second round match at the Australian Open would have been much easier considering most of the top-ranked men had been cruising through the first few rounds. But Simon gave Federer fits and it wasn’t until the final frame where Federer finally flexed his tennis muscles to push him through.

It appears Lance Armstrong has run out of tall tales and lies in the growing case against him for doping during his career. Sports Illustrated released some new information yesterday that validates much of what Floyd Landis had told the media several years ago. At issue is a drug that Armstrong used that boosted the amount of red blood cells in the body. This, in turn boosts the hemoglobin and allows cyclists to ride much longer and harder than they normally would. Armstrong of course denies the new information but public opinion on him has swayed in the other direction in the last year or so.

Just a few weeks ago the Miami Heat looked unstoppable. For the entire month of December they had only lost 1 game and frankly, they looked like the team many expected them to look like when the Big 3 came to town. And then injuries struck them pretty hard. Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James have all missed time the last few weeks with somewhat minor flare-ups and consequently, the Heat dropped their 4th game in a row last night. Is it time to make a deal for more depth? Perhaps, although the amount of chips the team has to offer is somewhat limited.

Almost 54 years to the day since Don Larsen’s perfect game in the World Series, Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies threw the second no-hitter in postseason history. Incredibly, it was Halladay’s playoff debut after spending 10 years with the Blue Jays. He needed only 104 pitches to complete the magical feat.

In not so surprising news, there’s already been a terrible incident at the plagued Commonwealth Games. Fifteen swimmers from Australia and England became ill from a warm up pool, allegedly from the quality of the water. Of course organizers are disputing the claim, but given the amount of problems the games have had already, they don’t have much of a leg to stand on.

A rather smart Pirates fan decided to bet against his team, and now, he’s a much richer man. He returned 9.98 percent on his investment betting 20 dollars every game. In the “hey-days” of the tech boom the S&P 500 index returned approximately 11% making this man, essentially, as smart and lucky as any money manager out there.

Many of our readers know that a college keg party will eventually get raided by the cops. Especially when minors are involved. Usually a slap on the wrist and a $500 fine suffices as punishment. But for three Wisconsin students and the local police, a slap on the wrist just wasn’t enough. They face an unbelievable 86,000 dollar fine. We hope that party was worth it.

Deadspin just hired a new editor, A.J. Daulerio, who I believe began his new job this past weekend, giving him less than a week on the job. He has two (TWO) associate editors and works for a company with 12 very successful Web sites. And yet today the brand new editor of only a few days asked his commenters and readers if any of them would be available to do a little posting over the holiday weekend? Uh… Wha?!
