If you run into a Red Wings fan today, stay away. They are angry and they’re tired. But most of all, they are deflated because they were 34 seconds away from the Stanley Cup.

Here at the Guyism, we look at the Most Deflating Losses in Detroit Sports History….

1987 ECF Game 5-Celtics vs. Pistons

After getting a crucial block of Larry Bird’s shot, the Pistons seemed in line to beat Boston in Boston for the first time in ages and take a 3-2 series lead back to Detroit. But Bird’s steal under the basket sealed the most disheartening loss in Piston History

2005 NBA Finals-Spurs vs. Pistons

Up by 2 wth only a handful of seconds remaining, the Pistons looked destined to go up 3-2. But a major gaffe by Rasheed Wallace left Robert Horry wide open for a three that was a dagger the Pistons couldn’t recover from

1993 Wild Card Game-Lions vs. Packers

With the Lions leading by 4 with less than a minute to play, it would probably take some kind of miracle to pull off a td. And that’s exactly what Brett Favre and Sterling Sharpe did as they connected on a 40 yard TD pass that sent Lions fans in the Silverdome packing

2008 NHL Finals Game 5-Wings vs. Penguins

After being down 2-0 in the first period, the Wings rallied back to take a 3-2 lead in the third period. With all the momentum on their side and with the crowd chanting for the Cup, the Pens pulled their goaltender and the Wings failed to clear the puck leaving Max Talbot open on the side of the net. And with 34.3 seconds to go, he sent it home. The Wings later lost in the third OT.

1983 Divisonal Playoff Game-Lions vs. 49ers

After falling behind, Billy Sims scored two 4th quarter TDs to give the Lions a lead with 5 minutes left. But 49ers QB Joe Montana rallied his troops and took a one point lead late into the game. But with 5 seconds remaining, Eddie Murray, one of the most consistent kickers in the history of the NFL had a chance to take the Lions to the NFC championship but missed a 43 yarder with five seconds remaining.

2007 ECF Game 5-Pistons vs. Cavs

In the confines of the Palace, the Pistons thought this game would be easy. Leading by 7 with 3 minutes left in regulation, the Cavs rallied and the Pistons allowed Lebron James to score his teams last 25 points to get a win in double OT.

2000 Christmas Eve, Final Regular Season Game-Bears vs. Lions

All the Lions needed was a win over the lowly Bears to get into the playoffs. The Bears just wanted to get out of town and set tee times for the following Monday. But in typical Lions fashion, a late Stoney Case turnover gave the ball back to the Bears and for rookie kicker Paul Edinger to seal the win with an incredible 54 yard Field Goal with 2 seconds remaining. The Lions were booed mercilessly off the field as fans threw toilet paper as they entered the tunnel. They have not sniffed the playoffs since.

2006 World Series Game 4-Tigers vs. Cardinals

After falling behind 2-1 in the series, the Tigers needed a win in the worst way. Detroit took an early 3-0 lead and were holding on by the slimmest of margins when Curtis Granderson slipped on the wet field of Busch Stadium in the 7th inning…on the next play Detroit pitcher Fernando Rodney sailed an easy throw over the head of Placido Polanco to continue the Tigers downfall. Later on in the game with the score tied, Craig Monroe allowed a ball to get by him in left field which sealed the Tigers fate.
