You know, whenever we go clothes shopping, which is usually when our last pair of jeans has finally ripped a hole in the crotch and our T-shirts have all become sleeveless, we do find ourselves wondering, “Hmmmm, what would random strangers on the Internet make of this outfit.”

Considering that the Internet is a bottomless repository of class, taste, and discretion, it’s a logical question. Fortunately, these hangers will give you the answer.

A Brazilian retailer, C&A, has every item of clothing it sells up on Facebook. If people like said item, they can just click a button and the counter, clearly visible on the hanger, goes up a notch.

Leaving aside, for a minute, that you’re letting the Internet, a drunken sex-crazed beast that generally attaches itself to insane crap like a flying Pop Tart cat or getting kicked in the balls, tell you what to wear, there’s a pretty serious engineering problem here.

Simply put, it’s a lot harder to “unlike” something than it is to like it, and that’s deliberate on Facebook’s part. So as people’s tastes change, they may no longer like that item…but if they even remember clicking that button on Facebook, they’re not going to bother going back and unclicking it, in most cases.

In short, letting the Internet clothe you is a very bad idea, even if Facebook is in charge of it.

It’s especially annoying because photos show up just fine in Facebook itself, but on the mobile app, apparently that’s impossible.

Well, until now. As much as I’ve railed about Instagram, they’re about to make everybody’s lives a little easier.

It’s pretty simple: yesterday Facebook rolled out an update to its mobile website and Android/iOS apps (sucks to be you, Windows Phone users) that actually makes the damn photos visible.

Not surprisingly, it actually uses Instagram’s layout and design in order to have a photo fill your screen completely instead of a tiny thumbnail.

Honestly, it really does make a world of difference. You can scroll through your feed a lot faster, and you no longer have to wait for photos, even galleries, to load.

In short, you can stay on top of your friends and interests about a thousand times easier now. Now if we can just get people to stop posting political images as status updates.

Facebook Takes a Cue From Instagram [TechCrunch]

Are you finding yourselves annoyed by the various people who’ve wormed their way into your Facebook without really being your friend? It might get worse: A new program being tested by the company would allow users to promote a status to all of their friends for just two dollars.

As part of the ongoing process to improve revenues while the social media behemoth moves towards its IPO, the new service called “Highlight” would allow users to post a status to ensure all of their friends see it.

Typically, status updates rise to the top of your feed based on an algorithm based on recency of the update combined with data determining how important the user is to you on Facebook.

Previous research shows that only 12% of your friends see your average status update.

In an official statement, Facebook says, “We’re constantly testing new features across the site. This particular test is simply to gauge people’s interest in this method of sharing with their friends.”

The odds of this quickly degenerating into people paying the price of half a cup of coffee to post “LOL Tom has a tiny penis” have to be somewhere in the neighborhood of -1,273,645:1.

We’re pretty sure the original name of a feature like this was “bureaucrat porn”, but either way, the last thing we need is a message system with these things. Because then the people you’re trying to avoid will know, right away, that you’re ducking them. So thanks, Facebook, thanks a lot.

Hidden in the new Facebook Messenger app update for iOS and Android are “seen by” receipts. Basically what this boils down to is that if somebody sends you a message, you can no longer look at it, groan, and pretend you’re too busy to look at your phone. They’ll know you read the message. Facebook will tell them. And, as far as we can tell, you can’t opt out of it.

We know Facebook is on a brutal and relentless march to reveal absolutely everything about us to the entire world, especially marketing departments, but seriously, guys, cut us a break. Everybody’s got that clingy toxic person they try to avoid: can’t you make that easier instead of harder?
