<p>For some reason comedians have generally been second tier in showbiz and never gotten the same accolades as musicians or actors. When the late great Rodney Dangerfield said “I get no respect” he might as well have been talking about comics in general.<span id="more-62086"></span> No other type of performer seeks to elicit a bodily reaction from the audience, whether it&#8217;s a chuckle, snicker, or gut busting guffaw. These nine performers were masters at their craft and often delivered an underlying message at the same time. They may be gone, but their humor is not forgotten.</p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>10</strong> Chris Farley</span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/Farley-135x95.jpg" alt="Farley 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="Farley" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62095" />One of the funniest guys to come out of <em>SNL’s</em> powerhouse cast of the ‘90s, Chris Farley used his body to push physical comedy to the max. Whether trying to save a small Ohio auto parts factory in <em>Tommy Boy</em> or giving an interview to a fresh faced Conan O’Brien, he came across as the guy everyone wanted to be friends with. An all American kid from Wisconsin, he emerged from the Chicago improv scene and dominated nearly every sketch he was in. Not only was he a gifted performer, but spent much of his free time volunteering and giving to charitable organizations. Sadly, he also spent a lot of time battling inner demons with drugs and booze. Nobody wore a sports jacket three sizes too small better than he did.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pOjIDQ95pp4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pOjIDQ95pp4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>9</strong> Phil Hartman</span><br />
<img src="http://s3.guyism.com/up/Phil_hartman14-135x95.jpg" alt="Phil hartman14 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="Phil_hartman14" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62094" />A master of voices and impersonations, Phil Hartman could slip into the skin of just about anybody and find the funny. The Canadian born actor started as a graphic designer but soon found his calling in the world of sketch and became a standout with LA’s Groundlings comedy troupe before joining <em>SNL </em>in the mid 1980s. He got the nickname “the glue” while at <em>Saturday Night Live </em>for his ability to hold the show together and help out fellow cast members with characters. In addition to his time with Lorne Michaels and company he lent his talent to <em>Pee Wee’s Playhouse</em>, <em>NewsRadio </em>and <em>The Simpsons</em>. The laughs were cut short when his wife, a struggling actress, shot and murdered him while he slept in 1998.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bps-xbo8wnA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bps-xbo8wnA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>8</strong> Bernie Mac</span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/bernie-mac-135x95.jpg" alt="bernie mac 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="bernie-mac" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62093" />There’s something about the mid-west, especially Chicago that spits out funny comics. Like Chris Farley and John Belushi, Bernie Mac came out of Chi-town not on the sketch scene but as a stand-up. He played the club circuit for nearly two decades before catching a break that led to a successful string of movies and a television show that garnered him two Emmy nominations. One of the original &#8220;Kings of Comedy&#8221;, Mac had a stage presence that came across as a bit of a curmudgeon that was often grumpy but meant well. His character in the dark holiday comedy Bad Santa is one of the funniest performances of his film career and utilized his humor perfectly.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XXA9qqJRChU&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XXA9qqJRChU&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>7</strong> George Carlin</span><br />
<img src="http://s3.guyism.com/up/george_carlin1-135x95.jpg" alt="george carlin1 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="george_carlin" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62092" />There really isn’t much to be said about George Carlin that hasn’t already been said a thousand times by fans, critics or his peers. The guy churned out more material than just about any other stand-up comic in history and developed a stage persona from straight laced, to hippie, to angry social commentator. It seems like the older George got the more he had to say, and he knew exactly how to say it. The guy was a master wordsmith and truly loved the English language. Carlin did just about everything possible in comedy, from being the first host of <em>Saturday Night Live</em>, to writing books, acting and performing 14 HBO stand-up specials. Nobody did more with a microphone than George. </p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cxmE2qMbYRU&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cxmE2qMbYRU&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>6</strong> Jim Varney </span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/JimVarney-135x95.jpg" alt="JimVarney 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="JimVarney" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62091" />If you were a kid in the 1980s with a working television, then you probably remember the rubber faced, goof Earnest P. Worrell. A master at voices Varney started as a stand-up comic and actor working clubs and dinner theaters in the south before moving to New York. The guy was famous of for playing the dim-witted but good natured Earnest, but was always an underrated comic actor who lent his talents to everything from <em>The Johnny Cash Show</em>, to <em>The Simpsons</em>, and a slew of films. Earnest warned us about the dangers of cigarettes, but didn&#8217;t heed his own advice and smoked up until the day he died.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2Wb5-nqd_OY&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2Wb5-nqd_OY&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>5</strong> John Candy</span><br />
<img src="http://s3.guyism.com/up/JCandy-135x95.jpg" alt="JCandy 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="JCandy" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62090" />Comedy movies in the 1980s were almost entirely dominated by four guys &#8212; Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy and John Candy. Another Canadian born funny man on the list, John Candy came to prominence on one of the best sketch comedy shows ever &#8212; <em>Second City TV</em>. He was the goofy older uncle that everyone wishes they had… probably where the idea for <em>Uncle Buck </em>came from. The constant smartass, he came across as funny without even trying. If you haven’t seen <em>Stripes, Planes, Trains and Automobiles</em>, or <em>Space Balls </em>in awhile do yourself the favor and enjoy the funny man from up north at his best.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7cUNA_0AOb8&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7cUNA_0AOb8&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>4</strong> Mitch Hedberg</span><br />
<img src="http://s2.guyism.com/up/MitchHedberg-135x95.jpg" alt="MitchHedberg 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="MitchHedberg" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62089" />Mitch Hedberg came across like that guy at a party that might have taken too much acid, a little odd, but certainly hilarious and worth listening to. Everything about the guy was offbeat, from his shy stage presence to almost stream of conscience one liners. He had a keen comedic ear for pointing out the absurdities of language and a delivery that was fun to watch. Hiding behind sunglasses and long hair, he had a distinctive delivery that was all his own and fit the material perfectly. Although he never became a household name, through constant touring and late night television appearances he developed a rabid following that has only grown after his death. If you ever got the chance to see Mitch perform live, consider yourself lucky. It’s a damn shame that his stage time ran up when it did.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IueXtzdC6kA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IueXtzdC6kA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>3</strong> Bill Hicks</span><br />
<img src="http://s3.guyism.com/up/Bill-Hicks-001-135x95.jpg" alt="Bill Hicks 001 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="Bill-Hicks-001" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62088" />One of the original “Texas Outlaws of Comedy”, Bill Hicks went on stage and put his opinions out there in a way nobody else at the time was doing. He was anti-corporate, anti- organized religion, anti-commercialism, but most of all he was anti-bullshit. He was about honesty and breaking down the walls that kept society and people from reaching their full potential. He didn’t cater to his audience or take the short cut to a laugh; he made them come to him. If you didn’t get him he didn’t care, that was your problem. If cancer hadn’t snuffed Bill out who knows what kinda brilliant material he would have continued to produce. A lot has happened in the world since his death in 1994, and there’s no doubt, that wherever Bill is he’s got an opinion on the state of things and not afraid to share it.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vX1CvW38cHA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vX1CvW38cHA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>2</strong> John Belushi</span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/Belushi-135x95.jpg" alt="Belushi 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="Belushi" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62097" />One of the original “not ready for prime time players” John Belushi nearly became a comedy hero overnight for pushing the envelope of comedy on the first few seasons of <em>Saturday Night Live</em>. It wasn’t a far stretch from reality for Belushi to play the hard partying frat guy in one of the biggest comedies of all time, Animal House. Unfortunately, it was the hard partying life that did Belushi in too early, at only 33 years old after overdosing on a speedball (a mix of cocaine and heroin). It was this same concoction that would later play a part in the death stand-up comic Mitch Hedberg. Oddly enough, Belushi joked in a 1977 episode of <em>SNL </em>that he’d be dead by 30. It’s too bad that he only surpassed this by a few years. The guy was an enormous talent that was only getting started.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/B6F1zG0gKNk&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/B6F1zG0gKNk&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><strong>1</strong> Richard Pryor</span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/richardpryor-135x95.jpg" alt="richardpryor 135x95 The 10 funniest dead guys we dearly miss" title="richardpryor" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-62098" />Considered by many to be the greatest comedian of all time, Richard Pryor broke the mold when he stepped on stage and nobody has matched him since. If pain equals comedy then it’s no wonder that Richard was so funny. He grew up in a brothel, struggled with drug addiction, set himself on fire, had problems with the law, and more than his fair share of woman troubles &#8212; and what did he do with it? He put it all out there for the public to see and instead of feel sorry for him they laughed with him. A master story teller, he had charisma, wit, and delivery like nobody else. If Lenny Bruce opened the door for purely honest raw comedy, Richard broke it off the hinges. Without Richard Pryor there would be no Chris Rock, Louis C.K., Bill Hicks or Dave Chappelle. </p>

<p>Comedy is a tough business to become a part of. You either start writing it, hit the stage to perform it, or you do both. Stand-up is the cruelest of all the forms that comedy manifests itself. Being a stand-up comedian can be very difficult, as it takes just the right mixture of writing, timing and delivery.<span id="more-55818"></span> Add a live audience that sometimes wants nothing more than to make your life miserable and you can see why being a stand-up comedian is no laughing matter. Unless, of course, you‘re as exceptionally gifted with a microphone in your hand as these ten people are.</p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>10</b> Denis Leary</span><br />
<img src="http://s2.guyism.com/up/dennis-leary-135x95.jpg" alt="dennis leary 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="dennis leary" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55831" />He was easily the angriest man in the entire world for a few years in the &#8217;80s and &#8217;90s. While he still may be angry, his recent TV performances can&#8217;t hold a candle to his old stand-up. He was so bitter and angry during his routines that it seemed like he was going to jump off stage and punch you in the face. You know how many people have fallen asleep during Leary routines? None, OK. That&#8217;s right. ZERO! The man screams like a banshee and smokes like a chimney, OK? Stand-ups were never more acerbic and they rarely got louder than Leary. His album <em>Lock &#8216;N Load</em> (released in &#8217;97) was a comedy tour de force. Leary spit jokes out with such vitriol that it looked and sounded like the was going to have a brain aneurysm on stage. He basically went all-in during every performance, and that&#8217;s what made him so awesome. That and the <em>Asshole Song</em>.</p>

<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>9</b> Louis C.K.</span><br />
<img src="http://s1.guyism.com/up/louisck-135x95.jpg" alt="louisck 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="louisck" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55830" />There probably isn&#8217;t a more honest comedian on the today&#8217;s stand-up circuit. He doesn&#8217;t stand there and pretend like he enjoys kids&#8211; he tells you that he thinks they&#8217;re dumb creatures and he fully despises them. He lives to go out and screw with people and that&#8217;s why people love him. He&#8217;s the guy that does and says what most of us wish we had the balls to on a daily basis. He rants on why everything about why being white is great, why the banking system is flawed, and why it&#8217;s just ridiculous to hate gay people. The guy is just naturally bitter and that manifests itself into his half-awkward, half-threatening presence on stage. He just seems like the guy that would take extreme pleasure in saying, “I told you that was going to happen…” Everything is amazing, and nobody&#8217;s happy. Truer words have never been spoken.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4u2ZsoYWwJA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4u2ZsoYWwJA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>8</b> Rodney Dangerfield </span><br />
<img src="http://s1.guyism.com/up/Rodney_Dangerfield-135x95.jpg" alt="Rodney Dangerfield 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="Rodney_Dangerfield" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55829" />Dangerfield was a late bloomer when it came to comedy. He didn’t get any respect until he got his break when he was almost 50. His jokes were corny, his suits could be atrocious, but his delivery was perfect. And his stage persona and arsenal of one-liners opened the door for a fairly lucrative film career. But every character he played on screen was Rodney Dangerfield. Same timing, same delivery, and the same results. His act worked everywhere and proved that a little self-mockery and pristine delivery can save even the hokiest of jokes. &#8220;I hear this place is restricted, Wang, so don&#8217;t tell &#8216;em you&#8217;re Jewish, okay?&#8221;</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yq1dF1Jgme4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yq1dF1Jgme4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>7</b> Robin Williams</span><br />
<img src="http://s4.guyism.com/up/robinwilliams-135x95.jpg" alt="robinwilliams 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="robinwilliams" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55828" />There are people who use cocaine recreationally and there are people who make a living off of being on cocaine. Robin Williams falls into the latter grouping of people. Watching Williams on stage back in his early days was like watching the missing link tell every joke that popped into his head, as he paced around the stage in a sweat-fueled frenzy. The energy he had (manufactured in a lab) was off the charts. He was a mile a minute comedian who just spit out thoughts and never looked back. Insane energy coupled with insane talent has turned the once fervent stand-up into a still fervent comedic icon.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/x5unxg"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/x5unxg" width="480" height="360" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>6</b> Steve Martin</span><br />
<img src="http://s2.guyism.com/up/steve-martin-135x95.jpg" alt="steve martin 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="steve martin" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55825" />The renaissance man of comedy was once known for his silliness and irreverent stand-up shows. Martin has a unique timing and quirkiness that meshes well with whatever you would categorize his stage act as. He can make you laugh with magic, he can sing you a song he wrote on the banjo, or he can just stand and tell jokes. His shtick is to be silly and so that’s what he goes out and does. Big picture thinker that gets big picture laughs. And he always has that one final joke in the routine that brings the house down.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dJCtOz32dnw&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dJCtOz32dnw&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>5</b> Lenny Bruce</span><br />
<img src="http://s2.guyism.com/up/LennyBruce-135x95.jpg" alt="LennyBruce 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="LennyBruce" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55826" />He was the stand-up who took comedy to another level. He didn’t just touch on controversial subjects &#8212; he was controversy. And from that controversy came some very raw and real emotions, that at the time, America really wasn’t ready to deal with quite yet. He was well-known for his stand-up, but during his prime, he was also known for simply pushing the limits to see what he could get away with. A bit about sex got him arrested and brought up on obscenity charges in 1961 and the same happened again a few years later. This guy was so adamant about people hearing his routine, that he was ready to go to jail for his art. Because of that kind of determination, he tore down the great wall of comedy and in doing so, and led future generations into the promised land: A place where comedians don’t have to worry about offending the masses&#8230; A freedom that Lenny Bruce was unable to enjoy during a somewhat brief and tumultuous career.</p>

<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>4</b> Eddie Murphy</span><br />
<img src="http://s3.guyism.com/up/Eddie-Murphy-135x95.jpg" alt="Eddie Murphy 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="Eddie Murphy" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55823" />It&#8217;s too bad that the current generation only knows Eddie Murphy as that doctor guy who can talk to animals or as Norbit. Back in the day, Eddie Murphy was the funniest motherf**ker on the planet and it wasn&#8217;t even a close race. Murphy killed on <em>SNL</em>, he killed in films and he still found time to kill on stage in movies like <em>Delirious</em>. Not even the red leather Michael Jackson and Prince go shopping-looking outfit can ruin that performance. Eddie was skilled at impersonations and always worked them into his routine. I mean, watch him do stand-up and you realize that Eddie didn&#8217;t need time in the comedy minors. He was talented, hilarious and ready for the spotlight at the age of 18. And he took it and ran with it until he lost his comedy roots and started doing any movie with a spaceship and a giant check. These days he&#8217;s more Bill Cosby than Richard Pryor&#8230; sorry, I just died a little inside after typing that.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XylJW5c9eJ0&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XylJW5c9eJ0&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>3</b> George Carlin</span><br />
<img src="http://s1.guyism.com/up/george_carlin-135x95.jpg" alt="george carlin 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="george_carlin" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55822" />There are dark comedians and then in a league all by himself is George Carlin. He looked like a hippie nobody, but he spoke like the scholarly prophet of a doomed future. Carlin was brilliant at picking up on the little things in our lives and how those supposed “little things” would end up coming back to destroy civilization. Wars were killing people for no good reason. Religion was decaying society. Death was always right around the corner. He was an eternal pessimist, but that seemed to stem from some deeper understanding of the darker side of humanity he seemed to posses. He was like that weird psychology teacher that you had in college, who was always hilarious, but you just knew he was going to snap under the strain of society one day. And on that day you knew you’d probably hear all seven of the dirty words and a few gunshots. Let’s hope it’s peaceful wherever he ended up. He deserved some downtime.</p>
<p><center><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MeSSwKffj9o&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MeSSwKffj9o&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object></center></p>
<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>2</b> Richard Pryor</span><br />
<img src="http://s2.guyism.com/up/pryor1-135x95.jpg" alt="pryor1 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="pryor" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55821" />Lenny Bruce may have set the stage, but nobody brought it quite as raw as Richard Pryor did. Pryor basically fed off hotbed issues like race relations and personal demons. Nothing was off-limits to Richard, which meant he always got huge laughs on stage, but often at the cost of his personal life. Jailed for tax evasion, he nearly burned his face off freebasing cocaine, and even when he helped pen the classic picture <em>Blazing Saddles</em>, he was removed from casting consideration because of concerns over being able to insure him. He was also married seven different times. Yeah, the guy had some pretty f&#8217;ed up stories and had no problem telling them in public. He was probably one of the best pure story tellers to ever set foot on a stage. In spite of (or fueled by) all his shortcomings, Richard Pryor will go down as one of the greatest comedy minds of all-time.</p>

<p><span class="spanlistitem"><b>1</b> Bill Hicks</span><br />
<img src="http://s1.guyism.com/up/Bill-Hicks-135x95.jpg" alt="Bill Hicks 135x95 The 10 best stand up comedians of all time" title="Bill Hicks" width="135" height="95" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-55820" />The man in black was the most profound and ingenious comedian that the world has ever seen. Hicks was a vicious satirist that attacked his audience for being tied down by senseless consumerism and pointless rules. He wanted to break free of the strains of financial conditioning and evolve into a a society based on love and compassion. Illegal drugs were to be fully experienced in order to gain a greater understanding for your mind and the endless possibilities around you. Music was supposed to be about your heart and not about your bank account. Religion was corporate and corporations were keeping society from reaching maximum potential. Hicks challenged his audience through relentless white hate and ended up collapsing under the weight of the world’s ignorance and stupidity. He was trying to save us from ourselves… and from the looks of it, he was the one who got the last laugh.</p>

<p>He made 23 comedy albums and appeared in 14 HBO specials. Carlin was one of the all-time greats and will be missed.</p>
<p>Here are a couple of his most famous bits and two of my personal favorites&#8230;</p>
