A hole-in-one is a pretty rare event. But four hole-in-ones at the same club in the same day? Well, that’s pretty note worthy. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the odds of that happening are somewhere in the range of once every 260,000 days, or, for you math nerds out there, one time every 712 years.

Within a span of about five hours last Tuesday, Don Starkey, Ron Kosits, Maynard Thompson and Wilson recorded holes-in-one at Plantation. Starkey’s and Kosits’ came on the par-72 Otter Creek course, and the others were on the par-71 Cranes Roost layout.

But the Lake County contingent aren’t pros, and all four are at least 70 years old.

For Merlyn Wilson and the 74-year-old Starkey, whose ace came on the 132-yard 12th hole, the holes-in-one were their firsts. Kosits,70, got his second, and Thompson, 74, is a veteran at sinking tee shots, getting his ninth.

I’ve been playing golf for the better part of a decade and have broken 90 once. God, I hate old people.

All-in-all, it’s a simple process, and worst case is you’re getting a few emails about an exciting sporting event and the possibility of attending it.

2012 Masters Tickets — [Masters]

Hello friends, and welcome to Guyism’s review of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters, edition. I’m your host, Will Brinson … oh, sorry.

I got caught up in my Jim Nantz moment, y’all.

Because, you see, Nantz finally made it into EA Sports’ popular golf game, and he’s joined by his old friend Augusta. Yes, America’s most famous golf course is finally available for virtual golfers the world round, and it’s the primary reason why you should invest in the 2012 version of “Tiger” (what I’ll probably be calling the game from here on out).

Lest we go further without addressing the giant black, wrecked Escalade in the corner, yes, yes it is kind of awkward that Tiger’s not on the cover. But it’s also understandable — his Q-rating isn’t exactly through the roof these days. And big, big ups to EA Sports for finding another creative way — last year they paired Tiger with Rory McIlroy on the cover for the purposes of Ryder Cup synergy — to continue to market a popular game in the face of difficult circumstances.

Anyway, the game itself, which is pretty fantastic.

For starters, Augusta. I mean, Augusta, man. Anyone who’s ever played golf or even ever played video game golf knows that the sport’s mecca resides in Georgia, and now everyone gets a chance to play it. And it’s as pristine as you would expect the real course to be.

There’s also three features distinctly tailored to the Masters: “Road to the Masters,”  ”Masters’ Moments,” and “Tiger at the Masters.”

“Road to the Masters” is actually just the “franchise” version of the game, as you create your own player and navigate challenges and tournaments in order to build up your golfing skills.

“Masters Moments” allows you to go back in time and recreate memorable events in Masters’ history, such as Phil Mickelson’s ridiculous shot out of the pinestraw onto the green. (Don’t bother trying that one unless you’ve got power boost turned on — more on that in a minute.)

It’s really quite the cool feature, especially if you’re a golf buff or a just a fan of sports history.

And there’s “Tiger at the Masters,” which lets players attempt to “relive Tiger’s four wins at the Masters by attempting to equal or beat his scores in each round of the Tournament.”

As to the “regular” portions of the game, well, they’re quite awesome too. Although, I will say it’s surprising to see that in any sort of advanced play, power boost and mid-air spin are out of play.

Which is to say, if you play at the “Pro” (second-easiest) level and you’re any good at this game, you’re going to destroy the opposition. I won my first tournament by about 10 strokes. Once I moved up to “Tour Pro” (second-hardest), I won a tournament, but only by one stroke, and only by burying a really hard birdie putt on the final hole of Sunday.

If you’re a novice, there’s plenty of assistance, though. Caddie tips are abundant, even in the Tour Pro mode, and it’s interesting that you’re offered a shot selection (layup vs. aggressive, with corresponding colors) and setup on each swing. It’s pretty crucial in the early-going, because of the difficulty involved in getting out on Augusta and swinging the old stick.

Plus, for someone who’s never played the game, stinking up the course is miserable. This is a good way to get more involved. Having said that, not everything the caddie suggests is “smart.” There are plenty of times when the caddie will tell you to use that draw to run the ball nicely around the treelike. Which is great, but just like in real-life golf, usually easier said than done.

“Course markings” that exist in real life, like a 100-yard-marker and 150-yard-marker are now on the course as well, which is a fantastic touch, because it lets you know how far out you’ll be following a particular drive.

And for people who don’t play real golf but want to learn, there’s a nice offering as well the USGA rulings — learn to play the game as you go. Like, did you know that in real golf rulings, if you happen to just miss a putt and then “instinctively throw your club at the ball,” you won’t incur a penalty?

Which means I’m slinging my putter all over the course next weekend. Provided I’m still not sitting inside playing Tiger 12.

If you’re a weekend hacker on the links like myself, you just breathed a huge sigh of relief. A NY court ruled that there is a certain amount of risk a golfer takes when searching for the ball on the course. And if you happened to get walloped by an errant shot like Dr. Azad Anand in 2002, well, too bad.

Dr. Anoop Kapoor and Dr. Azad Anand were playing on a nine-hole Long Island course in October 2002 when Anand was hit in the head while looking for his ball on a fairway, blinding him in one eye. The seven judges on the state Court of Appeals, siding with lower courts, said Kapoor’s failure to yell in advance of his errant shot from the rough did not amount to intentional or reckless conduct.
The court cited a judge’s finding that Anand was not in the foreseeable zone of danger and, as a golfer, consented to the inherent risks of the sport.
“The manner in which Anand was injured – being hit without warning by a ‘shanked’ shot while one searches for one’s own ball – reflects a commonly appreciated risk of golf,” the judges wrote.

As a general rule of thumb, if your partner is a hack, you DO NOT stand anywhere in front of them. Be it 60 degrees or even 90 degrees, even professional golfers shank a shot here and there (yes, even Tiger Woods did this past year). So it’s a good bet that the guy you just drank six beers with at the turn isn’t making a run at the U.S. Open anytime soon. And screaming out “fore”, um, that doesn’t do much when the ball is like a heat-seeking missile headed straight for your noggin.

As for Anand, the man who lost his vision in the incident, I truly feel bad for him. But something tells me this is something that should have been resolved between friends. As in, “hey, remember that time you jacked me in the face with a ball, yea, beer is on you tonight buddy.

Or maybe Kapoor should let Anand have his way with his wife. An Indecent Proposal of sorts. That’s how they use to solve things in the old days right? Bartering sex with one’s significant other?

If only we could return to that, I’d gladly take a golf ball in the nuts from the likes of Brad Pitt.

Top NY court upholds dismissal of golf ‘Fore’ suit [AP]

Since we crank out so many stories each week some really good ones get lost in the cracks. And since so many new people visit Guyism every day (thank you), we thought we’d start taking some time on the weekends to share some classics that many of our newer readers may have missed.

Over the years, women have proven to be stellar athletes and, over time, some experts expect women to be able to compete and defeat male athletes. But that doesn’t mean they don’t look downright foxy in their different uniforms.

12 Netball dress
Very unknown sport that was derived from basketball. However, they were smart enough to add some sex appeal and put them in these one piece dresses. Not common in the States for sure and more of an English/Australian/New Zealand thing… which is fine by me.

11 Field hockey skirt
Not often seen unless you’re watching the Olympics or ESPNU for a random college game. Nonetheless, an extremely strong competitor in this category.

10 Soccer shorts
Most would say that the soccer uniform has no business on this list but yet, its one of the few sports where a woman can be overtly muscular and still remain attractive. Helps if the shorts ride a little high… I’m just sayin’.

9 Golf shorts
Fair to assume that us men hate women on the golf course. They’re slow and they often don’t advance the ball beyond 50 yards. But those outfits could make Bea Arthur look attractive….(Okay, maybe not her… RIP Bea.)

8 The tennis skirt
An oldie and a classic.  Truly stands the test of time.  Although, lately women have gone with the tight shorts and or suit look (Serena Williams, anyone?), the skirt is still the consensus winner for tennis.

7 The gymnastics leotard
Very underrated but very much appreciated.  Just make sure you’re staring at someone who is of age.  In fact, stick to the college competitions to avoid looking like a pedophile.

6 Track and field shorts/tank top
Hard to ignore the popularity explosion of girls like Allison Stokke and other pole vaulters who flaunt their backside but you can’t ignore the runners who try to wear the flimsiest shorts possible in an effort to gain that extra advantage.

5 Indoor volleyball shorts
There is a human being out there (probably a man) who decided that girls needed for some odd reason to wear these uncomfortable and extremely short shorts.  I pray to that unknown person every day.

4 Cheerleading uniform
Debatable whether its a sport but they get the nod because as my friend said “they do have competitions”.  I think that was code for, “They’re in short skirts, put them on the list or I kill you.”

3 Surfing wetsuit
Another one of those sports that we just don’t get to see enough.  Probably because none of us know whats going on and what constitutes a good score.  If they could just focus on the bikini bottom and wetsuit, we could probably figure out everything from there.

2 Figure skating attire
Dresses, skirts, shorts… whatever these ladies put on seem to work well.  Probably because most of them could fit into a suitcase but hey, I’m not complaining.

1 Beach volleyball bikinis
By far, the gold medal of sports uniforms. You could put the ugliest professional beach volleyballer out there and every dude would be staring at her backside. That’s what you get for wearing a bikini and calling it a uniform.

There isn’t a golfer out there who hasn’t had the yips, the shanks or even a wayward drive go through a window. Under most circumstances, damage to property and person is minimal.

But starting a forest fire because you suck so bad. Now that’s impressive.

Apparently, the golfer was in the rough and was trying to hit his ball out of it when he accidentally swiped at a rock, which sparked the blaze at 12:07 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

McKeown said brush fires are not uncommon when temperatures reach into the high 70s and lower 80s and conditions are right.

Orange County Fire Captain Greg McKeown said “charges will not be filed against the golfer”. Well thank you captain obvious. While I’m not familiar with California law, I’m quite certain that golf shanks is covered somewhere under common law or I don’t know, common sense.

Now nobody is forcing us to watch them, but you have to admit that there are some “sports” out there that no type of television coverage can save. You could put them in HD, 3-D and project them against The Great Wall and a good portion of us still wouldn’t be interesting in watching them. Even with cable channels looking to fill time slots, these sports are probably best left to be covered by sports writers and accidental spectators; and the addition of a 3-D viewing experience just isn’t going to make these sports any easier to watch.

8 Curling
Ahh, curling. It’s the equivalency of bowling in the United States. It’s like watching bowling except 1) it is much quieter, 2) old people think it’s “just the right speed”, and 3) it’s on ice. The only thing that could make this better is if one of the Olympic mascots jumped in a Zamboni, went crazy running over people on the ice and then went on a high speed chase through the host city, robbing banks and taking hostages — maybe, maybe that would make it worth watching. “Quatchi takes another hostage and it looks like we’re down another stone” needs to happen before I watch a block of curling in its entirety.

7 Golf
I enjoy playing golf, but even with the greatest HD TV set in the world couldn’t make golf exciting. Sure, it’s sometimes OK to watch when Tiger Woods is in the hunt for championship trophy, but if Tiger isn’t putting it near the hole most folks aren’t tuning in. Playing golf can be refreshing and relaxing (depending on your foursome and alcohol intake) but on TV, it’s like afternoon Ambien. Everybody is whispering; a lot of standing around; a lot more floral patterns than you’re comfortable with — it’s like being at church , but it’s outside and there is a lot more swearing than should be socially acceptable. Oh Tiger, you gotta start making this more interesting again without visiting the 19th, 20th, 29th, and 45th hole…

6 Horse Dancing (Dressage)
I don’t know what it’s really called, I just know it should be called “Horse Dancing.” Who even decided this was an Olympic sport? The horse does most of the work anyway. I’m sure there is skill involved but I don’t like watching anything competitively dance under any circumstances. And while animals dancing is one of the staples of my sense of humor, watching a horse do the horse version of the Charleston while a woman in a top hat kicks it in the kidneys isn’t exactly something I’m clamoring to see. However, the minute you put a wizard hat on the horse, a jockey in a clown uniform and both of them doing the Electric Slide to Putting on the Ritz – we’re in business.

5 Canoeing
Look, I know it’s probably insanely hard to become a great canoer. It has to take exceptional upper body and cardiovascular strength… it’s making me tired just typing it. You probably get up at dawn and row a boat around a lake for the rest of the day while a man with a megaphone barks orders. That sucks for you and me, because I have no idea of knowing how hard everyone is rowing till the end of the race. It’s just a repeated monotonous motion and I don’t know how to cheer properly. What am I supposed to yell? “Row faster you son of a b**ch!” just doesn’t feel right. The participants all seem only mildly athletic and there are boats without the words “bumper” or “speed” in front, so, I guess, just wake me if you get attacked by pirates.

4 Cross Country Skiing
The start of these are usually pretty cool as the skiers blast out of the starting gates to get some momentum, but then gradually slow down to a steady, monotonous pace. The few times I’ve watched this event I’ve secretly wanted to watch everyone have their skis get tangled up and fall in a pile and roll down the hill in a giant snowball that will inevitably roll through the ski lodge, but that almost never happens unless I’m watching the Cartoon Network. At least with the Biathlon they give them guns to shoot — and anytime you get a gun involved in a sporting endeavor, it automatically becomes five times more interesting. Cross country is just marathon running in snow till you get firearms involved…

3 Rhythmic Gymnastics
When there are turquoise flags involved that is an immediate red flag that this sport is suspect at best. Hmmm, I don’t like regular gymnastics, but I like throwing balls in the air and waving a flag — I’m going to stop you there because none of those are activities I would pay to watch someone do unless you count Sam Bradford fumbling a ball while waving a surrender flag as Patrick Willis comes through the line and destroys him. Sure it does take a lot of athletic ability to compete, but I’d be more inclined to feed my niece a two liter of Coke and a pack of Oreos and watch her dance around with a bowling ball, hula hoop and a jump rope I found in the garage. Because how are those tiny arms gonna catch that bowling ball while hula hooping? See, that’s the intrigue I demand from my sports.

2 Track Cycling
It’s not that they just go around in circles really fast (that could somehow be interesting), it’s just a tough watch because you know that somebody is going to fall at some point and even if it’s the French guy falling, you still never want to see someone lose about 2/3 of the skin on some part of their body because they fell off a bike and slid 50 yards on their knees. We’ve all had bike accidents and it just brings up bad memories when you watch someone wipe out on a bicycle.

1 Long Distance Running
I was in an Ethiopian restaurant in DC during the last Olympics and there was an entire bar full of people there watching the an Ethiopian running in the men’s marathon and I have to say, Ethiopians get a pretty raw deal. What’s more boring than watching a bunch of guys run at slightly different speeds for several hours? The answer is nothing. Here’s a shot of some guy running, here’s a shot of another guy running a little slower and now back to the guy running slightly faster. For almost three hours they watched on the edge of their seats. If Ethiopia ever gets good at another sport, people’s heads in that bar will explode. Anything is more interesting than watching people run for a few hours, I mean how many highlights other than the final 10 seconds do you ever see of marathon running anyway?

In news that is sure to blow your mind, Anna Paquin has revealed that she is bisexual. Not only that, she did it in an online video. Sorry, it’s not that kind of video. But we have hope…

A week just can’t go by without some Lindsay Lohan news and this week is no different as LiLo was almost committed by the LAPD. As in committed to an insane asylum. Recently cops became so concerned they discussed taking her in for a 5150 evaluation. Frankly, I don’t see what all the concern is about. (Oh yeah, she also fell on her ass after a party… again.)

Although after the debacle that was Michael and Dina Lohan opening their mouths the other day I am a little worried about Lindsay. Rather than showing concern for their daughter the two of them pretty much just pointed out what scumbags they are. Although Dina did make it all seem ok with this line: “Lindsay is in good hands. Everything is fine.” Ummm… yeah…

At least she hasn’t had sex with 50 Cent (I think), because if she had, she’s have been doing it unprotected, as proclaimed he would do so if he could knock boots with Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Says Fitty, “I would marry Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Rihanna in Africa, I’d have 3 wives! And I would avoid wearing condoms and have really big families!” Okay, which one of those three names doesn’t quite fit?

Speaking of having unprotected sex, it seems that maybe Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian’s breakup may not have had as much to do with Reggie’s philandering as it did with Kim’s infamous sex tape with Ray-J. “Reggie’s mom just could not get over the fact that Kim had a sex tape. Reggie and his family are very conservative, and he told Kim that a marriage is never going to happen between them because of the tape.” Does that leave you as speechless as it does me?

And speaking of breaking up, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt broke up… or not. OK! magazine says that the Heidi has walked out on her husband after fewer than 18 months of marriage. However, People reports, “I’m not moving out,” Montag, 23, says. “I love Spencer with all my heart.” Adds Pratt, 26: “I love my wife more now than I ever thought I could.” In other words, who cares?!

Apparently Jesse James is closing on Tiger Woods faster than we envisioned as it is now being reported that he had 11 mistresses. One girl said Jesse would take her into his office and lock the door, while Sandra was in the garage. And oh yeah, he has a bunch of Nazi memorabilia. Nice catch, Sandy. Oh well, at least Jesse’s philandering got him out of a ticket. So he’s got that going for him. That and going to “rehab”.

At least Jesse James didn’t pay one of his ho’s $10 million as Tiger Woods is alleged to have done. Ho #1 Rachel Uchitel supposedly settled for somewhere in that neighborhood to keep her from holding a news conference spilling all the beans. She must know a LOT MORE than the other 452 chicks Tiger nailed (allegedly) for her to have made that much more bank than anyone else.

Never ones to shy away from getting attention, one of the Kardashian girls flashed the crowd from the balcony of her hotel room in Miami. Guess which one did it? Nope, not Kim. Nope, not Kourtney. Of course, it had to be Khloe, right? And it was. Her ‘husband’ Lamar Odom must have been so proud.

And in news that is sure to blow not your mind, Ricky Martin is officially gay. Next thing you know, we’ll be finding out that Barack Obama is really a black man.

As a blogger, I would like to thank Tiger Woods. It’s been fairly mundane in the sports world after the Super Bowl. NBA All-Star Dunk Weekend was a dud and the Olympics have been the biggest Canadian failure since Bryan Adams.

So when word leaked that Tiger was having a “press conference” on Friday at 11am, every sports medium woke up from their slumber. By the way, the word “press” is used loosely here. According to his agent, “a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates” will be in attendance. Sounds like it’s going to be held around a campfire with smores…

“Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11:00 a.m. EST Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida,” an e- mailed statement from Woods’s agent, Mark Steinberg, said. “Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he plans to apologize for his behavior.”

Woods obviously has taken some recovery steps, Steinberg said in a telephone interview.

“Tiger feels as though it’s time to make amends and to publicly do that,” the agent said. “This has all come together quite quickly.”

It has come together quickly Mr. Steinberg…so quickly that Tiger was seen for the first time publicly today outside his home in Florida jogging…or is that yogging?

No, not in the good ‘ol USA, but our damn neighbors to the north.  A Nova Scotia judge ruled that the Happy Gilmore swing “breached the standard of care owed to other players on the course”.

I wish I was joking.

Justice Arthur J. LeBlanc, in his decision, went on to trash an admittedly nontraditional but heretofore legal swing, that’s been a comic staple since it was made famous by the 1996 Adam Sandler film. In fact, an episode of Sport Science recently tested the effectiveness of it (see video clip below).

“I am convinced that the “Happy Gilmore” shot,” wrote Judge Le Blanc in his decision, “would have been less controllable than a normal tee shot, both because it involved a run-up to the ball (rather than an aimed shot from a stationary position) and because the defendant had been drinking throughout the day.”

Some background to the story might help a little. A bunch of guys were on a mini-bachelor party of sorts. Included in their repertoire was 28 cans of beer, a bottle of tequila, and some marijuana. And according to court documents, they bought some beer at the turn.

So of course high hilarity and drunken debauchery ensued which meant somebody was getting hit with a drive. That unlucky and innocent bystander was struck on the wrist.

Yada, Yada, Yada, he sued a few weeks later.

Which is where we bring in our friendly Nova-Scotian judge. Yes, instead of perhaps mocking the men for getting drunk and high and hitting golf balls, he deemed that the Happy Gilmore swing was the culprit.

I’d love to make a joke here about Canadians and their stupidity but I live in Detroit. And there’s that thing with stones in glass houses or something like that.

Late Saturday night into Sunday morning, Anthony Kim did what a lot of mid 20s guys do.  He got drunk.  Real drunk.  You know, the kind where you stumble in at 4am.  A few hours later he beat the crap out of Robert Allenby in a singles cup match at the Presidents Cup.  Allenby wasn’t too happy and went the sore loser route.

“Maybe we should all take the theory of Anthony Kim,” Allenby said. “Get home at 4 o’clock (in the morning) and then go shoot 6 under.”Asked if his comments were on the record, Allenby said, “I don’t care. Ask his playing partners. Ask his team. He is the loosest cannon in that team.”

Allenby went on to call the 24-year-old Kim golf’s “current John Daly.”

After the Jets loss to the Dolphins Monday, the Jets were a little upset about the Wildcat offense. More so, in the sense that they lost to it.

“I can’t respect that stuff, all that Wildcat,” Jets linebacker Calvin Pace told The New York Times after Miami’s 31-27 victory, which included 110 yards on 16 plays out of the Wildcat. “We’re in the NFL. Don’t come here with that nonsense.”
