It’s the first day of spring and, at least in NYC, it’s gloomy and disgusting out. So what better way to kick off this exciting new season than by watching a video of a cat dressed up in a hot dog costume eating a hot dog? What’s that? You say there’s no relevance to spring at all? La la la I can’t hear you.

That’s a homemade hot dog, made out of — according to the YouTube uploader and owner of Hot Dog Cat — “beef, chicken, carrots and broccoli, with the help of a meat grinder and steamer.” It also looks like a sickly dog’s feces. Frankly, I’m not sure which is less appetizing.

Either way, I support implied hot dog cannibalism, so the video is still a net win.

In the annals of archaeological finds, there have been all sorts of great things unearthed…dinosaur bones, human skeletons, and now a 140-year-old hot dog encased in a block of ice underneath the ground where the original Coney Island hot dog stand was created. All hail our new King of Hot Dogs.

At nearly 140 years old, this Coney Island hot dog is in pretty good shape.

It was recently found encased in ice underneath the boardwalk’s famous Feltman’s Kitchen.

The restaurant was formerly owned by the inventor of the Coney Island hot dog.

“Coney Island holds a lot of history of Brooklyn and New York, and for them to find a hot dog is just something to add onto it,” said Quincy Cook.

“That’s unbelieveable (sic), finding hot dogs that are 140 years old. That’s crazy. To me, that’s crazy,” said Antonio Velez.

You can see <a target="_blank" href="http://www.wwlp.com/dpps/news/strange/140-year-old-hot-dog-discovered-jgr_3251637" ">video of this huge news story here.

I’m not sure what exactly that says about the digestive process your body has to create to get a hot dog through our supple intestines. When a food we eat regularly can withstand temperature changes, the invention of the automobile and construction happening on top of it, you might want to avoid eating it in the future. You could probably find things that are healthier to eat in Magic Johnson’s shaving cuts than a hot dog.

For you, dear reader, I aim to educate as much as I do to entertain. Hot dogs are a huge part of America’s culture and now you can learn how they’re made! And try not to vomit on your shoes!

I really like hot dogs. In fact, when I was living with two of my friends, we used to have a day every now and then in which we’d put crazy toppings on hot dogs. The first time we did it, it was Martin Luther King Day, so it was called Martin Luther Hot Dog Day. Because what better way can you celebrate an important black leader than eating an encased blob of crap with potato salad, jelly, and bacon bits thrown on top?

After watching this video, I’d rather eat a bum’s asshole than eat hot dogs. Okay, that’s not true, but I’d still rather have not seen this video. Even though this horrifies me, I have no clue how else I would get my daily dose of jellied chicken trimmings. Taking it intravenously doesn’t seem like the best of ideas unless I want to have Oprah’s cholesterol. Sigh.

A new ad from something called The Cancer Project (do they want you to get cancer or not? WHAT ARE YOU AFTER, CANCER PROJECT?) caused a stir this week about hot dogs causing cancer, but it’s okay, hot dogs probably won’t kill you.

A new TV commercial shows kids eating hot dogs in a school cafeteria and one little boy’s haunting lament: “I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer.”

It’s a startling revelation in an ad that vilifies one of America’s most beloved, if maligned, foods, while stoking fears about a dreaded disease.

But the boy doesn’t have cancer. Neither do two other kids in the ad who claim to be afflicted.

“My concern about this campaign is it’s giving the indication that the occasional hot dog in the school lunch is going to increase cancer risk,” said Colleen Doyle, the American Cancer Society’s nutrition director. “An occasional hot dog isn’t going to increase that risk.”

The hot dog council called the new ad an alarmist scare tactic…

Whoa hold on…there’s a Hot Dog Council! That’s amazing! Here I was, thinking hot dogs had no one to protect them for their portrayal as a villain in misleading media like the ad above or the video game Burgertime (I want to punch all the hot dogs in the face for how they’d attempt to sabotage my burgers), but thank God for the Hot Dog Council, who provides amazing hot dog stats like this:

During Hot Dog Season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.

In 2007, consumers spent more than $4.1 billion on hot dogs and sausages in U.S. supermarkets, that equals more than 1.5 billion pounds of hot dogs and sausages bought at retail stores alone.

See? Hot dogs are keeping us from total economic ruin! The Cancer Project wants to take your hot dogs away. They want to stop us from having roads across the country made entirely of hot dogs…talk about progress! Are the folks at The Cancer Project anti-American communists? Probably. Are hot dogs delicious? Absolutely!

Side note: While doing research on hot dogs, I saw this AWESOME dramatic recreation of Burgertime. Burgertime is a f’d up place dude. [Source]
