Kristen Bell must not make enough money

I guess the paychecks for Kristen Bell’s new TV show, House of Lies, despite being picked up for a second season don’t pay enough because K-Bell’s $3.1 million home is now in foreclosure. Either that or her fiance Dax Shepard isn’t pulling his weight. What does he do again?

Normally this news wouldn’t be so enticing, but what makes it tasty is the fact that Kristen gave InStyle magazine a photographic tour of the place just a couple of years ago.

Miss Bell moved out not too long after the InStyle article came out at that for most of the last couple of years the house has been vacant. Recent aerial photos of the property shows the gardens and swimming pool areas aren’t being taken care of in a particularly fastidious manner as they were when Miss Bell was in residence.

Eh, it’s just money. There’s always more where that came from, right? She’s an actress!

Kristen Bell has always seemed adorably eccentric in interviews and such, like a less Brooklyn Zooey Deschanel. But in her interview on Ellen, Kristen might have crossed the line to just crazy when talking effusively about her obsession with sloths.

I think the key takeaway here is that if you’re going to try to poach Kristen Bell from the dude from Punk’d she’s married to, you probably need to come armed with some upside down tree-hanging skills and a sloth costume. Or look like Sloth from The Goonies. At least one of those.

Okay, so this ad from Showtime also covers Shameless starring Emmy Rossum, which is nice, but the real key to the video is the part where they promote House of Lies (starting January 8) by showing Kristen Bell in her underwear. I know I have called Kristen Bell overrated in the past… twice, (in fact, this is the first time I have ever done a post dedicated to her in over two years), but if she’s going to be strutting around in her underpants and bra on TV shows on a regular basis I reserve the right to change my opinion of her. Well done, Kristen. Well done.

7 canceled TV shows that should be brought back immediately

Since we crank out so many stories each week some really good ones get lost in the cracks. And since so many new people visit Guyism every day (thank you), we thought we’d start taking some time on the weekends to share some classics that many of our newer readers may have missed.

Ahh, TV, such an ephemeral beast. Shows seem to appear and disappear based on whimsical executives who care more about ratings than creativity, and even the most critically acclaimed series always seem to get zapped before their times. Here are seven shows that really shouldn’t have been canceled; you should go buy them on DVD and watch them right now.

7 Firefly
Count me among the people that didn’t love Firefly. Joss Whedon’s hybrid sci-fi-western had a ton of good things going for it, but the show suffered from some serious problems, including rampant cliches and bouts of sub-par acting. So why shouldn’t it have been canceled? Because it had enormous potential—its characters were fascinating, its universe was expansive and interesting, and its first season left audiences craving more. Unfortunately, Fox has a tendency to kill off shows before they can really hit their peak, and Firefly fell victim to the cancel-hammer, which was a real shame. Eventually, solid DVD sales allowed Whedon to make Serenity, a continuation of Firefly that turned out to be a great movie. So the lesson here is—buy your favorite shows on DVD, especially if they’re canceled!

6 Kid Nation
If you like watching child abuse and neglect, Kid Nation is the show for you. Throwing forty children aged 8-15 into a single old western-style village and forcing them to create their own society, this show was one of the best things to ever come out of the age of reality TV. The kids had to kill chickens, design their own form of government, build water pipelines, and figure out how to live together without any adult supervision. Like Lord of the Flies, Kid Nation gave us an adorable vision of democracy in action. Too bad it was never given a second season—I wanted to see if the kids would try to eat one another.

5 FlashForward
Sometimes I wonder if TV producers are all deranged psychopaths who just love setting up mysteries and never resolving them. It happened with Lost and then it happened again with ABC’s newest show, FlashForward, ironically designed as a Lost replacement. Canceled before it could satisfyingly answer any of the myriad questions it presented, FlashForward is forever destined to remain in TV limbo, and we’ll never even find out if the main character lived or died. Thanks a lot, ABC.

4 That’s My Bush!
This sitcom, brilliantly crafted by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, portrayed President George W. Bush and his life in the White House. But unlike other hackneyed attempts at Bush humor, That’s My Bush! didn’t attack the former president; it satirized TV tropes themselves. Intertwining classic sitcom situations with topical political issues like abortion and oil drilling, the show even had its own catchphrases and goofy takes on cliché characters, like the snarky White House housekeeper who always knew exactly what to say. The show cost too much for Comedy Central to reasonably produce, so That’s My Bush! went down the drain after eight episodes, but it will forever live on in the pantheon of excellent sitcoms.

3 Party Down
When people hear the name “Rob Thomas,” most think of that hacky crooner from Matchbox 20 who sings like he’s constipated. But they should be thinking of television showrunner Rob Thomas, the genius who created Party Down as well as the #1 show on this list. Party Down, a hilarious glimpse into the lives of wannabe actors and writers who work at a catering company, enjoyed brilliant writing and one of the best collections of cast to ever appear on TV. Unfortunately, Party Down always felt like it was destined for cancellation—it aired on Friday nights, its cast members kept moving on to bigger TV projects, and it never accumulated the ratings it should have despite constant buzz. It was canceled a few months ago, but who knows; with enough DVD sales, maybe we can get the Party Down movie we all want to see.

2 Angel
Many shows are canceled before they should be, but how often does a show get canceled just as its hitting its best season? Angel’s fifth and final season also happened to be its strongest, drawing upon the series’ most powerful elements to tell consistently compelling stories within law firm Wolfram & Hart. Unlike previous seasons, which pitted Angel and his team against a multitude of external antagonists, season five was all about the characters’ inner demons. Then, like many of Whedon’s endeavors, Angel was suddenly canceled. At least it ended with a bang, as Angel and crew are shown in the midst of a catastrophic fight, eternally battling to save Los Angeles. Let’s go to work.

1 Veronica Mars
Yes, it aired on WB and the CW. Yes, it had a spunky teenage female protagonist who solved mysteries. Yes, its cast members looked like rejected extras from the O.C. However, under all of its preppy trappings, Veronica Mars was one of the best television series of all time. Featuring brilliant writing that meticulously balanced comedy and drama, carefully structured mystery arcs that always managed to surprise, and one of the most poignant and realistic father-daughter relationships ever portrayed on screen, V-Mars never failed to impress. It was dark, hilarious, and clever; TV classes should be forced to use Veronica Mars as a textbook example of how to properly write a mystery. It’s a shame that it never found its audience and was subjected to network executives’ unnecessary middling. Do yourself a favor and buy this show on DVD—it’ll be the best purchase you ever make. Plus, Kristen Bell is just… wow.

9 fictional love triangles any guy wishes he could be in

How many times have you seen a love triangle in a movie, watching a TV show, reading a book, or browsing a Guyism article and think to yourself, “Man, I’d give anything to be that guy.” Okay, I threw that last one in to feed my own ego, but you have to admit, with the rest of the options, the thought comes along pretty frequently. Here are a few of those fictional love triangles that any guy would kill to have been the dude in.

9 Betty Cooper, Archie Andrews, Veronica Lodge in Archie Comics
Ah, the never-ending debate: Blonde or brunette? This love triangle found Archie Andrews constantly torn between everyone’s favorite wholesome girl next door, Betty Cooper and the spoiled brat, Veronica Lodge. Only in a comic book could a freckly, redheaded guy have the town’s two hottest women pining for his love. And on a side note while we’re focused on Archie comics, does anyone else think Eminem looks a little like Jughead ever since he ditched the bleached hair for the darker do? Just saying… And this here is the reason a certain unnamed writer will be beaten to a bloody pulp by a famous rapper from Detroit.

8 Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross in The Graduate
The porn industry serves as proof that the mother/daughter fantasy is a popular one. Ladies, if your mother is even slightly attractive, trust me…the thought has entered your guy’s mind at some point. So when Mrs. Robinson seduced Benjamin, every guy out there was rooting him on. Let’s face it; despite all of the trouble in got him into, Benjamin Braddock was living the dream. Plus, he had Simon & Garfunkel to provide the background music throughout his predicament… Who wouldn’t enjoy a constant stream of Simon & Garfunkel when they’re going through some tough times? It’s hard to stay all riled up with The Sound of Silence stuck in your head.

7 Jennifer Morrison, Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein in House
Dr. Gregory House is a complete asshole. He says what we’re all thinking and doesn’t care much for whatever consequences await him in doing so. It’s been proven time and time again that women love bad guys and House is no exception. Both Dr. Cameron (Morrison) and Dr. Cuddy (Edelstein) are drawn to the guy despite his negativity. Although Cameron is probably the better looking of the two, Cuddy’s rockin’ body (which House points out on a regular basis) brings them neck in neck. No wonder House has had a tough time committing to either one. It’s not a bad deal to have two successful and attractive doctors pining for your love… especially when you seem to be a completely drug-addicted mess who has very little to offer in a serious relationship.

6 Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon in Cruel Intentions
One of the many horrible Hollywood movies saved by a little girl on girl action. It’s almost as if the studios know these films aren’t going to do well, so they say, “Let’s just throw a kissing scene between two women that doesn’t have anything to do with the plot right smack dab in the middle of the film. That oughtta do the trick”. Well, it worked. And although the kissing scene wasn’t between SMG and Reese, I’m sure most guys would’ve loved to be in Ryan Phillipe’s position as he shot the steamy scenes with both of these actresses. Also, here’s to hoping they can somehow still make that SMG/Reese kiss happen in one of the numerous horrible sequels.

5 Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Elizabeth Mitchell in Lost
No doubt about it… Sawyer (Holloway) was the man. He was able to pull the trigger with both of Jack’s ladies while Jack sat by himself and cried in the corner… over and over again. You toss in Ana Lucia and Sawyer had himself a nice little Love Square. Naked sweaty time in a sweltering jungle with the ridiculously flawless, Kate (Lilly) alone will make you want to be this guy; but playing house with Juliet (Mitchell) when you’ve been left behind on the island isn’t too bad of an option either.

4 Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, Jeanne Tripplehorn in Basic Instinct
Michael Douglas has made a career out of hooking up with some of Hollywood’s hottest women on camera over the years. However, it was starring in Basic Instinct with Sharon Stone while she was in her prime that got him on this list. His Skin-e-max worthy sex scenes with both Stone and Tripplehorn had guys everywhere wishing they could spend just a few hours in his character Detective Nick Curran’s shoes. While in the real world, Douglas’ marriage to the “only getting better with age” actress, Catherine Zeta-Jones, has guys wishing they could spend their entire lives in the actor’s real-life shoes.

3 Kristen Bell, Jason Segel, Mila Kunis in Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Much like Betty and Veronica, this love triangle also featured the battle between the blonde and the brunette. In this case, however, the blonde was the rich, stuck up, prissy, self-centered bitch while the brunette was the down-to-earth one. Here’s the problem with this love scenario: these are two of the hottest women on the planet and yet, they were fighting over Jason Segel. So ladies, you can thank this love triangle (and the rest of Hollywood for that matter) whenever a pudgy, average looking guy at a bar thinks he actually has a shot with you.

2 Adrianne Palicki/Minka Kelly–Taylor Kitsch–Madison Burge/Alicia Witt
in Friday Night Lights
Who wouldn’t want to be Tim Riggins? In just four seasons of Friday Night Lights, the dude managed to land himself two separate love triangles. Sure, he may be a washed up, ex-football star living out of a trailer off beer and Easy Mac, but that’s a small price to pay for his track record. More recently, he pulled the mother/daughter combo with high schooler, Becky (Burge) and her hot bartender mom, Cheryl (Witt). But originally, it was the tall and leggy blonde, Tyra (Palicki) versus the crazy hot brunette cheerleader, Lyla (Kelly). Ultimately, Riggins ended up with Lyla who he first got involved with while she was dating his freshly-paralyzed best friend. Classy guy. Although, I can’t blame him… if it meant some quality time with Lyla, I’d probably pull the same move. I might even go so far as to be the reason my best friend ended up in the hospital. You might think that’s a little extreme, but I know he’d do the same for me.

1 Denise Richards, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell in Wild Things
The only reason anyone even sat through Wild Things was to see Denise Richards and Neve Campbell go at it. It certainly wasn’t the stellar acting. And, the only reason anyone even bought the DVD was so they could easily skip to those specific scenes that were almost worthy of an X rating. It certainly wasn’t so they could focus intently on the enticing and difficult to follow storyline. Matt Dillon’s character gets extra credit (and top billing in this article) for being the only guy on this list who managed to turn his triangle into an actual threesome. Matt’s brother, Kevin might be the more famous Dillon these days, but all guys would easily take Matt’s “entourage” over Kevin’s any day.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art held their annual Costume Institute Gala last night and I guess the event is some kind of big deal since just about every sexy celebrity in the world got all dressed up and attended the event. Michelle Trachtenberg’s recent amazing photo shoot for the folks over at Complex magazine got me to thinking about all the super sexy videos those folks have put together the last few years. Mark Ecko’s monthly masterpiece has had many of the women you want to see sit for them in various stages of undress and they were nice enough to not only snap photos of these lovely ladies, but also capture many of these moments on video.

So for those of you who don’t like football, the next best thing on TV last night was the American Music Awards. Not for the musical performances or the awards that were given out, but for the simple mass of sexy humanity that was in attendance. I watched football. myself, but I kept tabs on the babes that patrolled the red carpet just for you, because I knew you’d want a full report. Apparently certain sexy women do in fact like video games because the Assassins Creed II launch party had a few of them in attendance. I guess it helps that Kristen Bell played one of the characters, because, you know, she has such a notable speaking voice. Whatever the reason, sexy celebs like Kristen, Edyta Śliwińska, Jessica Sutta, Lo Bosworth (not shown, too icky…), Lauren Conrad, Jessica Szohr, Sofia Milos, and Stephanie Pratt were there to show their support (in order below). Hmmm… so apparently it’s mostly just the dancing, fake reality show babes, and smoking hot older foreign babes that are into video games. Good to know.

Welcome to the 2009 edition of our Sexiest Woman in the World event! As I stated last year, there are many sites and magazines that do this and in most cases they get it wrong (see Lohan, Lindsay; Spears, Britney; and Mills, Heather). Last year you, my awesome readers, voted Kate Beckinsale as the 2008 Sexiest Female on the Planet and I couldn’t have been more pleased with your taste. Let’s try not to blow it this year, okay?

Here’s how it’s going down. I’ve tweaked things a bit this year. Last year we had 64 babes going head-to-head til we got down to the finals. This year we’ll have 100 babes in 10 groups of 10 with the final 10 being divided into two groups of five, then the winners of those two groups will go boob-to-boob to determine our champeen for 2009.

Apparently Kristen Bell is playing Princess Leia in some movie that I probably won’t see, but will have 35 year-old supernerds lined up outside the theater for three days in advance of it’s premiere. Oh yeah, the movie is called Fanboys… perfect… a tribute to geeks…

If they released this movie and the entire thing was Kristen dressed up in this outfit, then they might be on to something and actually get my 10 bucks… I’ll withhold judgement til I find out more…

Now I know Hilary is famous and hot and all, but since she was in those kids shows back in the day what has she done professionally to keep her in the limelight (and don’t tell me her albums)? I ask this because I personally have never seen her in anything on TV or in movies. Wait, I take that back. She was in that movie where a scorpion crawled down her pants and some dude reached into her bag of goodies to retrieve it. It’s a rare treat to not have something overtly negative to say about some celebrity girl. She looks good here. She doesn’t really do any absurd things for the attention of gossip rags. She’s the voice of Gossip Girl. Kristen Bell’s pretty awesome all around.

HOWEVER I will say that many women should learn a lot from Kristen Bell. I mean, is it so much to ask that every woman be petite with perky breasts and a tight ass in addition to being rich and famous, but not too famous, and pretty and adorable in a Tinkerbellish way? I think not. You know, actually, maybe that is too much to ask. I guess we could just kill off all non-Kristen Bell women and just replace you all with various cloned versions of her with slight genetic differences. Like black Kristen Bell, athletic Kristen Bell, Latina Kristen Bell (pronounced “Kristeñ Be-y”). Yeah maybe we should stop cloning sheep and wombats and whatever the f and get to work on this Kristen Bell-based utopia!
