Hey, if you’re an A-list celebrity, then it’s pretty safe to say that you’ve got a fairly large bank account. However, not all celebrities start their lives surrounded by sports cars and caviar. Below are nine famous people who truly went from rags to riches.

9 Justin Bieber
That’s right, you may curse his name now, but a few scant years ago this swoop-haired teen dream was nearly destitute. According to Bieber, before becoming famous he grew up in a rat-infested home with an empty fridge. He had to sleep on a pull-out couch and lived off a diet consisting mostly of macaroni and cheese. Today, the rat-bastard is worth around $65 million.

8 Mariah Carey
Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Long Island, Mariah Carey grew up in near poverty. Lacking any toys or other fun things to do, she found her own fun by doing things like poisoning her dog and setting her parents’ car on fire. Later, she moved to NYC and took several part-time jobs to help make ends meet. By chance, she met a Columbia Records exec at a party, and she used her soulful voice to talk him into checking out her music.

7 J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling had to wait a long time to find her fortune. Before she started writing the Harry Potter series, she was struggling to get by as a single mother living off of welfare. As the story goes, Rowling had a four-hour delayed train trip to thank for her wealth. Apparently, while idly waiting for the train, the idea of a young boy attending wizard school appeared fully formed in her head. She’s now one of the richest celebrities in England (reportedly worth over $1 BILLION).

6 Danny DeVito
Before his big break on Taxi, Danny DeVito was not only short in stature; he was short on cash. In fact, he was once so penniless that he spent a night sleeping on a New York City transit bus. Using a few of his last coins to call his agent, he was thrilled to find out he had a job offer.

5 Snoop Dogg
Like a lot of famous rappers, Snoop grew up in squalor. His early days in Long Beach (a.k.a. the LBC) had him following the general career path of men in his neighborhood -– selling drugs. After a few short stints in jail, Snoop started making tapes with his friend who just so happened to be the step brother of Dr. Dre. The rest, as they say, is multimillion-dollar history.

4 Jim Carrey
For starters, Jim Carrey had one big strike against him growing up: he was Canadian. While in high school, he had the pleasure of living out of a camper van with the rest of his family. He also worked full day shifts at a tire factory. Not content with this lifestyle (Gee, who would be?), Carrey dropped out of school at 16 and moved to LA to make it big in Hollywood. The young comic caught the eye of Rodney Dangerfield, who gave him some respect and let him be the opening act to his show. Now, he’s one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood.

3 Leonardo DiCaprio
You remember Leo’s days on Growing Pains that had him playing the character of a homeless boy? Yeah, well as it turns out that scenario wasn’t too far off from his real life. Leo grew up in Hollywood surrounded by drug dealers and prostitutes. Despite these unhappy surroundings, Leo skipped out on the low road and found himself landing acting gigs that helped catapult him to the very top of the Hollywood A-list.

2 Demi Moore
Would you be shocked to learn that Mrs. Ashton Kutcher could technically be referred to as trailer trash? As a kid, she spent part of her years in a trailer park, and had the misfortune of having an abusive father who spent his days drinking instead of working. Much like Jim Carrey, she just couldn’t take that living situation, so she dropped out of school and moved to Hollywood at age 16.

1 Mark Wahlberg
Mark Walhberg said “so long” to school even earlier than Demi Moore and Jim Carrey. At age 14 he dropped out and went to work as a street thug. After a couple years of stealing things, making drug deals and getting high, he was convicted of assaulting two men and sentenced to 50 days in prison. Reportedly, the stint turned him around. Proving once again that it’s often who you know, his older brother Donnie helped him out and got him a record deal.

It seems like at some point, every musician decides that he or she should also be a movie star, usually with hilarious(ly stupid) results. Therefore, a list like this could probably be 100 names long. So don’t take this as a comprehensive list or anything. Instead, look at it sort of like Congress. The people on this list are representatives of a larger group, they are often hilariously inept, and for every success story there are dozens of failures. Plus, Barney Frank once played Dirk Diggler in an off Broadway performance of Boogie Nights. The similarities are endless. With all that said, let’s just get on with it. Here are 11 pop stars who tried to act.

11 David Bowie
Over the last 40 years, David Bowie has actually racked up 30 different acting credits, ranging from his starring role in 1976’s The Man Who Fell to Earth to his role as the Goblin King in Labyrinth. Along the way, he’s lent an air of cool to almost everything he’s touched and has managed to mostly avoid embarrassing himself – unusual for this sort of thing. That probably speaks more to the fact that he’s David friggin’ Bowie than anything else because if you look at his list of credits, there is some hilarious shit in there. I mean, come on, I already wrote that he played something called the Goblin King and somehow he escaped that without mockery so clearly he’s kind of bulletproof.

Most Ridiculous Role: Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ. You know, this is the reason why everyone thinks the whole world was on cocaine in the 1980’s. I mean, you should probably never be watching a movie about Jesus and think “Wait, is that David Bowie?” Or hell, maybe you should now that I think about it.

10 Sting
Sting, like Bowie, has actually chalked up a fairly decent list of credits over the years. His most famous performance (or infamous, depending on your point of view) was probably as Feyd Rautha in Dune, which was notable because, well, it was Sting starring in Dune. That would be like casting Adam Levine or the dude from Coldplay in one of the Lord of the Rings movies. Still, the weirdness of that aside, Sting has managed to turn in a few decent performances, most notably as the bar-owning father of the main character in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which he somehow managed to pull off without people pointing at the screen and saying “Hey, there’s Sting,” which might sound simple enough, but that’s a tough trick for any rock star turned would-be actor.

Most Ridiculous Performance: It has to be his role in Dune. That shit’s just weird, right?

9 Madonna
At various points in her career, Madonna has tried to reinvent herself as an actress, usually with disastrous results. The one exception was probably her role as Eva Peron in Evita, which actually earned her some critical acclaim. But since that was a musical, it doesn’t really count. Any time she’s actually tried to act without singing, it, uh, it hasn’t gone so well. Whether it was hamming it up as Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy (cast presumably because Warren Beatty wanted to bang her) or her role as a femme fatale in the Basic Instinct rip-off Body of Evidence (cast presumably because the director wanted to bang her) or as a castaway in the hideous Swept Away (cast because the director, Guy Richie, was banging her), Madonna has mostly just been met with eye-rolls and hoots of derision. No wonder she hasn’t bothered to try again for almost a decade.

Most Ridiculous Performance: Probably her role in Swept Away, if only because the entire movie was a complete debacle that almost ruined the career of her husband, Guy Richie, but let’s not forget how embarrassing Body of Evidence was, in which she spent the whole movie humping dudes and pretending she was Sharon Stone.

8 Roger Daltrey
Roger Daltrey, frontman for The Who, has no less than 55 acting credits on his resume, which, considering you’d be hard pressed to name even one of them, is either impressive or kind of sad. Mostly, Daltrey has popped up in various terrible television shows, playing a variety of mostly forgettable characters, most of whom seem to exist for the sole purpose of people pointing and saying “Hey, there’s Roger Daltrey, let’s watch this show for five minutes before we get bored and changed the channel.” To Daltrey’s credit it seems like, for the most part, this whole acting thing is just something he’s done to pass the time and have a little fun in between bouts of resurrecting the corpse of The Who and sniping with Pete Townshend.

Most Ridiculous Performance: Like I said, they’ve been mostly forgettable, but if I had to pick one, it’d probably be his performance as the 800 year old immortal pipe-smoking, hapless womanizer Hugh Fitzcairn in the television series version of Highlander. Why is it ridiculous? Just read that description again.

7 Diana Ross
Diana Ross’ acting appearances have been few and far between over the years, but every so often she’ll pop up and remind people that she exists – and that she should probably stop trying to act. Her most memorable appearances were probably as Billie Holliday in 1972’s Lady Sings the Blues and as Dorothy in the ridiculous movie The Wiz, made in 1978. In more recent years, she’s done a handful of TV movies which is probably about as far as she should push herself although you just know that deep in her diva heart she thinks she should be playing the lead in Twilight or something.

Most Ridiculous Performance: The aforementioned The Wiz. Have you see this shit? It’s ridiculous. Not only does this Wizard of Oz remake star a 34 year old Ross as Dorothy, it also stars Michael Jackson (yeah, really) as the Scarecrow, Nipsy Russell as the Tin Man and Richard Pryor as the Wiz. Do I really need to say anything else?

6 Courtney Love
Believe it or not, there was actually a moment, following her performance as Althea Flynt, Larry’s wife, in The People vs. Larry Flynt, when Courtney Love actually seemed like she could become a respectable actress. That was probably the height of her entire career, and in retrospect the fact that she could pull off the role of a fucked up stripper junkie turned porn star who dies of AIDS probably, uh, shouldn’t have been that surprising. Since then, Courtney’s career has been derailed by the fact that she’s, well, that she’s Courtney Love.

Most Ridiculous Performance: Sure, there’s her role as Althea, but did you know that she also had a minor role, back before she was famous, as Gretchen, Nancy’s friend, in Sid and Nancy? Which is ridiculous only when you consider that she basically used the movie as the template for her real life relationship with Kurt Cobain. Actually, ridiculous probably isn’t the right word. What’s that word that I’m looking for? Oh right, creepy. Creepy. Yes, that’s it.

5 Vanilla Ice
Vanilla Ice is on this list simply because, as a people, we cannot afford to forget the atrocities of his film, Cool as Ice. No, he’s never really done anything else of note in his acting career, but that doesn’t matter. He is the Osama bin Laden of this list. His actions endangered us all as a species and entire countries should have been invaded in order to stop Cool as Ice from being made. Never forget.

Most Ridiculous Performance: His entire life.

4 Tina Turner
Tina Turner is kind of the opposite of actor John Cazale, famous for appearing in only five movies, all of which were nominated for an Oscar, and all of which are considered classic 1970’s movies. Like Cazale, Tina Turner only appeared in a handful of movies, and like Cazale all are noteworthy. Unlike Cazale, all of them are noteworthy for being completely ridiculous. She is basically the John Cazale of ridiculous movies. Here are her three film roles, presented without comment: as the Acid Queen in Tommy, as Aunty Entity in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and as The Mayor in The Last Action Hero.

Most Ridiculous Performance: Uh, all of them? If I had to pick, and I guess I do, I’d probably pick her role in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, if only for the outfit.

3 Jon Bon Jovi
Jon Bon Jovi has had a surprisingly eclectic career, popping up largely without fanfare in everything from his role as a naval lieutenant in the World War II submarine action flick U-571 to his most recent appearance in the craptacular New Year’s Eve. And for the most part – and to his credit – he’s managed to pull it off without people doing that whole pointing “Hey, there’s Bon Jovi!” thing. That at least hints at real talent. He’s also appeared in Ally McBeal, in Sex and the City, and as a male slut in Moonlight in Valentino. That’s at least 48% better than whatever the hell Bret Michaels or Vince Neil have pulled off, right? Then again, they do have the market cornered on “rock stars who tried to be porn stars and made sex tapes” market, so hey, maybe that’s something for Bon Jovi to shoot for. Just a thought.

Most Embarrassing Performance: Honestly, Bon Jovi has managed to have a nice little acting career without any ridiculous or embarrassing moments. Then again, if you need to laugh at him, there are always his band’s videos.

2 Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey tried to become a movie star and the result was so horrible that it made her lose her mind. I mean, here are the facts – prior to Glitter, she was probably the most successful pop singer in the world, she was married to a respected music producer and people generally envied her. Today, she has no career, she’s married to Nick Cannon and she spends most of her time appearing in weight loss ads aimed at Hoveround-bound housewives. Now, I’m not saying there’s a direct correlation, but…

Most Embarrassing Performance: Her role in Glitter is in the Embarrassing Performances by a Musician Trying to Act Hall of Fame. To her credit, she wasn’t the most ridiculous thing about Precious though, so there is that. Then again, that’s like saying that Herpes isn’t as bad an STD as the rest.

1 Mark Wahlberg
Hey, remember when this dude was Marky Mark? I have no idea how he pulled it off, but somehow that ridiculous dude went from that to being an Oscar nominated actor. That would be like Kim Kardashian being nominated for a Nobel in physics or like me being nominated for a Pulitzer. (Hey, wait a minute…) But starting with his iconic role as Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights and continuing through the present, Mark Wahlberg has actually pulled it off. Today, when people see him they don’t think “Hey, there’s Marky Mark.” They think “Hey, there’s Mark Wahlberg, the famous movie star.” That’s damn near a magic trick. Maybe he’s a wizard. I don’t know. What I do know is that perhaps no one in history has ever made the transition from ridiculous pop star to big time movie star as seamlessly as Wahlberg. Does the Marky Mark thing still pop up every now and then to a chorus of laughter? Yeah, but it doesn’t dominate anymore and that’s kind of amazing given that once upon a time this dude was just this shy of being Vanilla Ice.

Most Embarrassing Performance: Somehow, in a movie – Boogie Nights - in which he plays a karate kicking moron porn star and flashes a giant stunt cock, Mark Wahlberg isn’t a completely ridiculous joke. Seriously, is this dude actually the devil or something? How did he pull that off? If I had to pick one embarrassing performance, it would probably be his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s ridiculous The Happening, but even then that one wasn’t really his fault. He was just caught up in a nightmare of suck.

Mariah Carey released her 1994 Christmas hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” at the peak of her powers. She was sexy and cute with a ridiculous voice and beloved by all. Now, it’s 17 years later. She’s had a couple kids. Her fame has dwindled. What does she do? Remake the song with Justin Bieber. I has a sad.

I mean just look at this picture below. It’s like Mariah Carey, even in all her blissful lack of self-awareness (as hot as she is, she’s in her 40s and should probably stop dressing like she just got off the stage at the Spearmint Rhino), can’t even stand that she’s doing this.

Either way, kudos to Justin Bieber for having such multicultural friends in this video. I totally buy him as a spokesman for our times who doesn’t look completely ridiculous when rapping now.

Hey, a video game company has to do what a video game company has to do, especially when their backs are against the wall to various respects. But it’s all so embarrassing nonetheless.

So the numbers are in: Nintendo apparently had an amazing Black Friday. 535,000 copies sold of Skyward Sword, making it the fastest selling Zelda in history, plus another 500,000 consoles pushed as well. No doubt all those crazy discounts played a major role, though it’s amazing to know that many folks were still without Wii’s in the first place.

I’m pretty sure a good number were folks who previously owned the system, then sold it, and then had to buy another one, cuz the new Zelda looked so damn amazing. As for the 3DS, Super Mario 3D Land led the charge by moving over half a million units as well, though the handheld itself saw an increase of 325% in sales, which is phenomenal.

Once on the ropes, it would appear that the 3DS is bound to making a comeback! Too bad the following was perhaps brokered when things were not looking so hot. Do yourself a favor and fast-forward to the 1:50 mark…

At least if features a fairly cute chick with shot hair… oh shi-, it’s that Justin Beiber kid that everyone’s all crazy about! Anyhow, a couple of things:

- First, I apologize for posting such rubbish onto Guyism, but at the very least, it does feature Mariah Carey trying to act all sexy in Santa garb as well. That’s some consolation at least.

- I’ve thankfully been able to live a life devoid of listening to any of Beiber’s music, with the sole exception being if it’s playing in the background at the drug store. So… I guess he’s one of these autotuned hacks?

- I love Beiber’s perfectly cultivated and curated pose of ethnically inclined pals, but who aren’t too ethnic if you catch my drift.

- The video takes place at Macy’s, the flagship store in the heart of Manhattan. And like many folks who lives in NYC, I’ve never set foot inside the place, ever, and probably never will. They sell video games there?

- Do you think Beiber and Carey hooked up after the shoot? They’re celebs, so yeah, more than likely.

Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter have reportedly called it quits. Her reps confirmed the news to several outlets including People magazine last night.

Just last month, Kelly was at Yankees stadium when Jeter got his 3000th hit. She even shed some tears at the historic moment.

Unless things went south in a hurry, I’ll just go ahead and applaud Kelly’s incredible ability to produce fake tears on the fly. Undoubtedly, a star actress in the making.

As for Jeter, he’ll no doubt recover quickly from this “devastating” split. His rolodex of lovely ladies is filled with some of the best Hollywood has to offer.

A gentleman named Royce G. Garrison stumbled upon this video of himself in his grandmother’s basement performing a little dance/lip-synch to Mariah Carey’s 1991 hit “Emotions” back when he was 11 years old. Somehow this led to him thinking he should post it on YouTube. This one is firmly entrenched between hilarious and painfully embarrassing to watch.

I’m glad this young fellow grew up to be so comfortable in his skin that he could post this on YouTube. Because if you asked me to project his future based just off this clip, I’d have presumed reenacting scenes from “To Wong Foo” before fellating successful yet eccentric closeted homosexual business men. Or possibly getting murdered immediately after the video ended. This felt about as much like a snuff film as a young boy innocently performing Mariah Carey could feel. I blame the wood paneling.

Nick Cannon wants to fight Eminem; calls him out

Nick Cannon (aka Mr. Mariah Carey) apparently has some beef with Eminem (who doesn’t?) and has decided to re-open the wounds and take the feud to the boxing ring. Sounds like “America’s Got Talent” is trying to get a new job on “The Contender.”

And the last episode of this season’s Entourage doesn’t seem as far fetched now…

Eminem makes fun of everybody, does he not? He has parodied everyone from superheroes to Osama Bin Laden and yes, even the diva herself, Mariah Carey. This is not news to anyone, as the rapper is known for an oft serious demeanor that seems to go out the window the minute he hit’s the studio to record lyrics or music videos. It’s parody. It’s art. So why out of all the people Em has taken shots at over the years is Nick Cannon the person to take it personally enough to escalate his beef into a fist fight? Probably his crazy wife that has no sense of humor and can never let anything go.

You remember this year-and-a-half-old beef, right? Eminem’s “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” off his Relapse album, took some shots at Cannon and his wife, Mariah Carey. Cannon shot back: He dissed Em’s skills and clowned on his boasts of bedding Mariah, calling the attack “racist bigotry.”

Yeah, so this comes down to the fact that at one time when he was the greatest-rapper-in-the-game, Eminem slept with your wife and now your pissed about it. Well, why the hell would you want to fight about this when you could be using that training time to build a time machine and go back to stop it from ever happening? Or you could just get over the fact that other men have slept with your wife and stop trying to use that as a catalyst to help the generate publicity so that people will know you less as Mr. Mariah Carey and more as that guy that hosts that one show where the guy dressed as a 17th century gay clown opera singer.

Cannon reignited the fuse in July, when he reportedly attempted to confront Shady at the BET Awards, making fun of Em for allegedly hiding out behind his security detail. Then, earlier this month, Cannon threw another haymaker, dropping “I’ma Slick Rick,” in which he called into question, um, Eminem’s ability to get ready for game time.

Come on, guy. Dissing Ems skills on the radio and erectile dysfunction in a musical number seem a bit on the ridiculous side. This seems like it may end up being one of those skits from Chapeele’s Show about when keeping it real goes wrong. You’ve seen others with beef get smoked by Eminem in the past, so why poke a sleeping, sober bear when you know he’ll just end up lyrically destroying you in a few months time? Let it go, man.

A clean and sober Eminem told Vibe in August that he was done with all that, saying, “I really don’t want to talk about [Carey] anymore. I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse … I’m not even going to comment about it. I’m done with that whole situation. I said what I had to say.”

Well, I guess that means no fight or new track. Nick will just have to find a new way to reinvent himself without getting into the ring with Eminem. I hear Lindsay Lohan need a new sponsor…

As you know by now, The 82nd Annual Academy Awards happened (well, is happening… depending on when you read this). While I much prefer Playboy’s version of the red carpet I’ve still been impressed with the show tonight. Oh, and the ladies in attendance. (Though not as impressed as I was with what the ‘losers’ of the major awards received as parting gifts. Sheesh…)
