7 Terrell Owens – 18 points and 3 rebounds in one half

It’s almost unfair to put Terrell Owens on a list like this. After all, TO did dabble as a professional basketball player in the USBL before the Philadelphia Eagles angrily put an end to it five years ago. But his 18 points at the 2008 Celebrity game was remarkable because he didn’t even play half the game. Yea, Owens dropped 18 points including a monster dunk on a bunch of five foot nothing celebs en route to the MVP award.

6 Marisa Miller’s pants fall down

This isn’t as much shocking as it is awesome. At the 2010 Celebrity Beach Bowl, someone had this fantastic idea of putting Marisa Miller in skimpy jogging pants with flags attached to them. From the very onset of the game, Miller had repeated wardrobe malfunctions as she tried to keep her pants up after tackles. It culminated in arguably the greatest depantsing in the history of sports when Tom Arnold got entirely too physical with Miller. Arnold later admitted it was his greatest contribution to society since trying to rid the world of Roseanne.

5 Justin Bieber MVP 2011 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

Fresh off a disappointing Grammy’s that saw him go home empty handed, pop sensation Justin Bieber was looking for redemption. He got in the form of a surprising MVP performance at the 2011 NBA All-Star celebrity game. But it wasn’t just the stats (8 points, 4 rebounds) that gave everyone “Bieber Fever”, it was the skills he displayed when he crossed-over and broke the ankles of fellow musician Common.

4 Dan Cortese hits a homerun in his last ever at-bat for Rock N’ Jock

The name Dan Cortese is synonymous with celebrity athletic events. Cortese spearheaded MTV’s Rock N’ Jock for the better part of a decade, leading the way with flag football games and of course, the infamous “Bricklayers” vs. “Violators” basketball game. His greatest moment, however, came in his last ever at-bat in Rock N’ Jock softball when he homered to deep center. Even a roided-up Brady Anderson couldn’t get to that one.

3 Michael Rapaport scores four points and wins MVP

For some reason, D-List actor Michael Rapaport has made repeated appearances at celebrity games–apparently the term celebrity is used loosely for these things. Anyways, in 2010, Rapaport scored two baskets becoming the only ginger outside of Brian Scalabrine to ever put the ball in the hoop in competitive play. For that effort and his supposed shut-down of Terrell Owens, he was given the MVP award.

2 Kevin Coster shows off his wheels in Rock N’ Jock softball

Kevin Coster made his fair share of sports flicks over the years. In fact you could argue those were the only movies he made that didn’t bomb in the box office (*cough, cough Waterworld *cough). So it comes as no surprise that Costner with his experience in Field of Dreams and Bull Durham was somewhat of a stud on a baseball diamond. During the 1990 Rock N’ Jock softball game, Costner shockingly managed to score from first on a Daryl Strawberry fly ball to seal the win for his team.

1 Nelly – 11 points and 12 rebounds in 2006 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

There have certainly been memorable performances by celebrities in athletic events, but none can touch Nelly’s stat-stuffer at the 2006 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. At times, Nelly resembled the Harlem Globetrotter’s Curly Neal as he repeatedly dribbled circles around his competitors. His 11 points and 12 rebounds is the only recorded double-double by a celebrity in the game and judging from the talent that is usually displayed at these things, it will be the only one for the foreseeable future.

But she’s also a HUGE football fan (she’s from NoCal, so she got the not-to-horrible experience of rooting for the 49ers while growing up). I was lucky enough to catch up with her at the Super Bowl and chat about football, how to make your ladyfriend love sports, and the program she and the old Captain Morgan are working on in order to help raise money for the Gridiron Greats program.

Will Brinson: Alright, so it’s early and the morning and let’s get right to the booze — you’re doing some work with Captain Morgan, right?

Marisa Miller: It was really important for Captain Morgan to partner and do an initiative that benefited the community, so we came up with the ‘First Mate Fund.’ And it’s great because the month of February all the proceeds are going to the Gridiron Greats which helps all the hardships after they play football.

Captain Morgan has a huge fanbase and loves to have fun, so if you go on Captain Morgan’s Facebook page and upload your ‘Captain Morgan pose’ — for every pose we get, we donate $1. We’re trying to get a million poses, we’ve got 75,000 right now. And it’s just a really great cause and a lot of fun as well.

WB: Have you got any celebrity poses?

MM: By the end of the day, I’m definitely going to get one …

WB: You’re obviously a big sports fan, so let me ask you this, because my fiance kind of hates football …

MM: How does she hate it?!?

WB: Well, it actually works out pretty well, because –

MM: It’s your alone time?

WB: Right! I mean, well, ummmmm it’s work. And I have to be really have to be focused and stuff. But do you have any advice for any guys who have girlfriends or significant others who aren’t into football but want them to be, or even maybe girls who aren’t into football but would like to be? [Ed Note: I am in no way saying I want my fiance to get into football. Let's be very clear on that, honey.]

MM: For me, it was always a big part of the family social gatherings, so even if you don’t like it, there’s an aspect of it that, maybe the wives can get together and they can learn together.

And if you really sit down and watch and learn and get into the stories of the players — I like watching a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff because you follow the guys and what their story is.

Healthy competition is a really good thing, too — I’m very vocal when I’m cheering for a team and it just makes for a fun environment. And I cook a big meal and my family and I all sit around and argue and yell at the TV and it’s fun.

WB: And you’re a Niners fan, so I’d assume you’re a big Joe Montana fan?

MM: Yeah, I started watching the Niners when I was 10 years old and my dad would take me to Candlestick and that was our bonding time. And when your team is killing it, it’s a great time to love football!

And the guys I grew up watching — Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and Roger Craig — they’re still legends today. So that was my first impression of it and it was bigger than ever, and the excitement of it was just so impressive.

The key is you always have to have faith in your team no matter what.

WB: Well on that note, what do you think about the Niners hiring Jim Harbaugh?

MM: I think it’s awesome — we have a lot of talent on the team and it’s just about putting it together …

WB: And getting a quarterback!

MM: [Laughing] Well, I thought Aaron Rodgers was going to go to to the Niners, so …

WB: Oh man, yeah, so how tough is that to watch him playing so well and thinking what could have been?

MM: I know, right? What could have been … but that’s what’s great about the Super Bowl this year is seeing a guy from Northern California that I followed and seeing him in the Super Bowl. It’s just awesome — Green Bay’s played so well and to be the wild-card team and they played such tough games to get here.

Even though Pittsburgh’s a really tough team and has so much experience on their side and they’ve won more Super Bowls than anyone in the league. But you never know … you see the Patriots have an undefeated season and the Giants take it.

So it’s going to be a good game on Sunday.

WB: Alright, well, I’ll get you out on this — can you give me a prediction for Sunday?

MM: I think Green Bay’s going to kill them.

WB: Kill them?

MM: Oh yeah.

WB: Like, more than 2.5 points …

MM: I think it’s going to be 24-10 Green Bay.

WB: Alright, well I had 24-21 Green Bay …

MM: Well, you’re in the right direction!

Apparently Marisa Miller was on Conan O’Brien’s show sometime in the last week and wore a dress that highly accentuated two of her most redeeming qualities. As if we needed another reason to want to watch Conan instead of The Tonight Show. This isn’t even really fair to Jay. Eh, screw him.

No wonder the NFL is the greatest sports league in the world (save it, Euros). Not only is it the most exciting sports league to watch, now they get Marisa Miller to be their spokesmodel and send her over to Europe in a pair of skin tight leather pants. Yes, the USA rules. Although maybe sending the 49ers over there wasn’t the best choice to represent the awesomeness of American football. In fact, I hope no one goes to the game because that could set football back 20 years in Europe if people actually do watch them play this weekend.

Oddly enough, a similar set of circumstances faced Stafford this past weekend. After being out with a sprained shoulder in Week 1, he was listed as the emergency quarterback on the depth chart against the Giants. His primary backup Shaun Hill broke his forearm in the first half which forced his backup, Drew Stanton, to come into the game. Later, with the Lions trailing and two minutes to go, Stanton went down on a hit and laid on the turf for some time. Inexplicably, the Lions’ coaching stauff were faced with a decision they didn’t want to make. Should they send out their franchise quarterback with a shaky shoulder against one of the toughest defensive lines in the league? Thankfully, Stanton picked himself up off the turf and gutted out the rest of the game. However, TV cameras did catch Stafford prepped and ready to go–strapping on his helmet and running onto the field as they went to commercial break.

We had a chance to talk to Matthew Stafford yesterday about the shoulder injury and some other NFL issues:

How is the shoulder? Are you ready to go?

I’m prepared to take all the snaps we have in practice this week and hopefully my shoulder will feel good and if does, then yea, I’m hoping to be out there on the 31st.

Could you have played effectively this past Sunday as the emergency quarterback?

If I had to absolutely go into the game and throw a couple of balls, I could do it.

Regarding arguments in the locker room, anything close to the Randy Moss/Tom Brady hair fight?

Nothing about hair to tell you the truth….I haven’t really gotten any comments, I must be doing something right with AXE, nobody has a problem with my hair.

Thoughts on the Calvin Johnson touchdown ruling in Week 1?

Looked like he was kinda using the ball to get up….It was tough, definitely a little frustrating.

After seeing the Jets-Broncos pass interference call this past weekend, do teams consider just heaving it up in the hopes that officials will give them a call?

We don’t really discuss it too much. Our guy, Calvin, gets bumped around quite a bit and doesn’t seem to get a whole lot of calls. We’re trying to complete them when we throw down the field.

Who’s the best defensive player you’ve ever faced?

Charles Woodson

A lot of talk the last few months about athletes caught in compromising photos. How do you go about avoiding that?

You obviously gotta do the best you can, you can’t let it run your life, you can’t be paranoid, you can’t let it stop you from going out there and doing certain things that you normally do and if somebody happens to take a picture of it and it’s not illegal, not racy, if it’s nothing like that, it’s life. You play quarterback in the NFL, you’re going to get pictures taken of you doing things, pretty much everybody does and since you do it, it’s news.

Do you think Brett Favre will get suspended?

I don’t know too much about the situation. I don’t even know if it’s been proven that it was him….or if he was doing that kind of stuff or not.

If you’re Andy Reid, who do you start, Kevin Kolb or Michael Vick?

We saw Vick when we played him and he played great against us and we had watched film on Kolb the week before and he’s really good too. If one of the guys isn’t 100% healthy, you go with the other guy. But it’s a really tough call.

Hot topics in the NFL this week are concussions and helmet to helmet collisions. Briefly, your thoughts on what needs to be done?

With as big and as fast and as strong as everyone is in this league, I don’t think there’s a lot of room for guys to be hitting each other head to head.

Do the rules need to change?

I think the rules are ok, they just need to be enforced a little bit more. I have no problem with a guy sticking a helmet in somebody’s ribs and bringing him to the ground and hitting him hard…but when you start going up around a guys head and he’s not looking, defenseless, there’s not a whole lot of good that can come from it.

Is the 18-game NFL season feasible?

There were more guys on injured reserve than ever before in the NFL last year. Pretty high number and it seems to be growing more this year. That’s something that’s going to have to be talked about in the new CBA and figure out if that’s something that we, as players, think is possible. We know the owners want it.

Speaking of the CBA, how would you respond if players are locked out next year? Do you plan on playing anywhere else, sitting it out, waiting?

That’s something I’m going to have to think about after the season. If the owners don’t want us to play and lock us out then a lot of guys are going to have to find something else to do. Hopefully we get something signed but it’s been pretty tough negotiating with them so far.

The Jags-Titans MNF blowout had better ratings than the Rangers-Yankees playoff game. Are you surprised?

Apparently, all the teams in the NFL are losing money and we’re still getting more views than MLB playoff teams. It’s kind of a crazy thought.

Earlier this year, Stafford teamed up with AXE Hair products for a number of different events. Although he may not have the free flowing locks of Tom Brady, like he said earlier, at least his teammates don’t make fun of him. And yea, he also got some “hair action” from hottie supermodel Marisa Miller at the 2010 Super Bowl. That, in and of itself gives him a leg up on the Patriots quarterback. Those SB rings and MVP trophies on the other hand, well, Lions fans will have to wait. Something I’m sure they are more than accustomed to.

Spike TV’s 4th Annual Guys Choice Awards took place this past weekend. Did you watch it? I didn’t, despite the amount of high-quality female celebs in attendance. Normally and event featuring the likes of Marisa Miller, Sandra Bullock, Charlize Theron, Courtney Hansen (whoever she is), Scarlett Johansson, Brooklyn Decker, and Jessica Biel (pictured in order below) would have had me planted on the couch, but I was out drinking champagne and partying with supermodels on my yacht. That or I forgot. One of those things…
