Well here’s a sad bit of news to start off your Friday. One of the nicest guys in rap is dead. The Beastie Boys had quite a career trajectory, from snot-nosed kids that tossed out their hardcore band to dive into the wild new world of hip-hop and became some of the genre’s first crossover stars. And now there are two.

Adam Yauch, who performed under the name MCA, was diagnosed with a tumor on his salivary gland in 2009 and began undergoing treatment. The band has not performed live since then, and the release of their most recent album Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 was delayed while he was ill. Unfortunately, after three years of treatment, the cancer has claimed Yauch’s life.

In addition to anchoring the mic for the group as well as playing bass guitar, Yauch was the band member with the keenest visual eye. Under the pseudonym “Nathaniel Hornblower,” he would direct some of the group’s most famous videos including “Intergalactic” and “Pass The Mic.” He was also responsible for the band’s staunch support of the beleaguered Asian nation of Tibet. The world has lost a great talent. Let’s remember the good old days and fight for your right to party all weekend in his honor.

In our ongoing quest to build the perfect Spotify playlist for Guyism, we’re adding a new song each day to our Guyism playlist. Today is “Medicine” by We Were Promised Jetpacks.

In addition to having an awesomely factual name about technological deception (looking at you, Jetsons), the Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks is one of those cool indie bands whom everyone who knows stuff really likes. You’ve also probably heard their music on TV or in movies; they’ve had songs on soundtracks ranging from Sons of Anarchy to Hall Pass. The band is currently wrapping up their US tour (New Yorkers, take note – they’re playing several dates in the city later this month/early May) and then heading back to Europe.

Holograms have become popular at concerts in recent years. The Gorillaz used them for a “tour” of sorts. Mariah Carey used them to be in a dozen places at once for a stunt in Europe.

Now apparently, Nate Dogg will be the beneficiary of this technology, to be brought back from the dead. Because…because…Dr. Dre can afford it, we guess?

We fail to see the appeal. First of all, on stage will be Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Warren G, Daz Dillinger, and let’s face it, you stopped reading after seeing Dre and Snoop. Secondly, it’s not like anybody has really missed Nate Dogg that much. Or at all. Probably half of you reading didn’t even know he was dead.

And finally, it’s creepy. Like, really creepy. It’s bad enough that musicians keep releasing albums from beyond the grave, do we really need to start using archival footage to bring them back for nostalgia tours? And what about the irritating musicians? Imagine a world where, when Nickelback are finally killed by an angry mob, an AI gets plugged into a hologram generator and they just keep on touring and defecating albums onto the shelves. Is this a world we really want to live in?

The Australian artist Gotye is blowing up fast, notching 10 consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100. This weekend is supposed to be another watershed moment for the singer as he’s set to perform on Saturday Night Live hosted by Josh Brolin. This song has a hauntingly melodic vibe befitting Gotye complaining about a chick ditching him. There’s also a xylaphone, I think. How can you be mad at that?

Despite being a year old, the song is starting to become more ubiquitous just now. And while it may have lost some street cred by being the theme song for a Microsoft Internet Explorer ad (because Internet Explorer is the browser you don’t want to love, I guess?), it’s a very catchy but brooding song about needing to break up with someone.
