In 2004, the New England Patriots capped off a magical run, winning their third Super Bowl in four years by defeating the Eagles 24-21. Owner Robert Kraft went all out in celebrating the victory by awarding members of the team with the most expensive Super Bowl ring to date–a 14k white gold ring with 124 diamonds. A priceless piece of jewelry.

But in this rough economy, it’s hard, even for some professional players to keep their head above water. One of those players, practice squad wide receiver Ricky Bryant, found himself in a bind with a broker and was forced to sell it. The ring made its way to the Gold and Silver pawn shop in Las Vegas, home of History Channel’s Pawn Stars, where it was featured on Monday night’s show.

A mere $21k seems like a steal for something of that magnitude, but again, who knows what kind of financial position Ricky Bryant is in these days. After being sent to NFL Europe to play Hamburg Sea Devils in 2005, not much can be found about the former Hofstra standout.

23.5

The blockbuster deal that was supposed to send Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets is officially dead according to team owner Mikhail Prokhorov. For the time being, Carmelo will stay a Nugget and the Detroit Pistons Rip Hamilton will have to continue to ride the pine until a home is found for him. Anthony is having a good year but by his standards, his points per game is down from 28.2 to 23.5. Certainly doesn’t mean he’s lost his touch but maybe, just maybe the rumors are affecting his game.

2010

Several sources in the Boston media are reporting that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be undergoing foot surgery yet again. The problem? A recurring and perhaps chronic condition that he has dealt with all season. It appears the surgery will be today but there is a chance Brady pushes it to Monday. How will this affect the team going forward? Who knows, but the amount of pressure on Brady to perform week in/week out without a supporting cast is starting to wear thin.

16.5

Carl Pavano and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a deal of two years and $16.5 million dollars. Pavano considered going to back to the Yankees where he struggled at times but ultimately thought that his performance last year in Minnesota earned him some time there again. “When you go through free agency, there’s a lot of big decisions that you have. Obviously I couldn’t walk away from the rapport I have with my teammates, the staff and the organization.”

2-6-11

If the Chicago Bears go to the Super Bowl, they’ll have some support from the Commander-in-Chief. Barack Obama has pledged that if his “hometown” Bears beat the Packers on Sunday, he’ll be in attendance at the Super Bowl in Dallas. Pretty brave statement considering Obama doesn’t even have tickets yet. Wonder who ends up paying for those? Hopefully not the taxpayers as lower level seats are going for as much as $1900.

Well, it’s been more than a few days since an NFL player was in trouble with the law, so we were long overdue. Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney was arrested in St. Louis for possession of marijuana and unlawful use of a weapon according to TMZ.

Cops say while Maroney has a valid “Conceal and Carry” permit — he was arrested for packing the gun while under the influence of drugs.

Maroney was in a car with 5 other people late Monday night when cops say they observed “several occupants” of the vehicle smoking what was believed to be marijuana.

Five of the six people in the car were arrested and three firearms were discovered during the bust … including two handguns and a rifle. It’s unclear which gun cops have associated with Maroney.

Maybe Maroney, a former New England Patriots player himself was a bit upset after the surprising loss to the Jets on Sunday. Or maybe, just maybe he’s just another dumb NFL player who rolls with his friends smoking weed and carrying guns. At the very least I give him credit for actually having a license to carry one. That may end up saving his ass this time.

Well, all those were fine and dandy but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Bart Scott’s post-game interview yesterday is unmatched. Some have said that it reminds them of a WWE interview with Sal Palontonio playing the part of “Mean Gene” Okerlund. I’m in the camp that believes Scott was channeling his inner Clubber Lang.

Regardless of who it reminds you of, it’s a must-see video.

Amazingly, 3-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has now lost his last 3 playoff games. I say amazingly because Brady was nearly unstoppable in his first few years in the league in the post-season. But ever since the Spygate scandal and the loss in the Super Bowl to the Giants a few years ago, Bill Belichick and his band of merry men have been more of a regular season team. And dare I say, Brady has replaced Peyton Manning as the best “regular season quarterback”.

How successful an organization are the Pittsburgh Steelers? Well, next weekend they will play in their 15th AFC championship game. Thus far in the storied history of the franchise, they are 7-7 winning 6 Super Bowl including ones in 2005 and 2008. They are favored against the Jets at home next weekend and if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger continues his incredible play, they will no doubt head to their 8th Super Bowl. Truly an amazing statistic.

Jay Cutler’s postseason debut could not have gone better. His 274 yards and 111.3 QB rating was more than enough to push the Bears past the Seahawks at home yesterday. The knock on Cutler for years has been his inability to not make the “big mistake”. Interceptions, taking unneeded sacks, and fumbles at crucial times haunted him for years including part of this past regular season. But it appears Cutler has figured it out. Let the defense and special teams do a lot of the damage and just manage the game.

Despite his suspension from the Iowa football team and his drug possession charge, running back Adam Robinson wants back with the program. At a news conference yesterday, Robinson admitted to possessing marijuana and was given one-year probation with a $315 fine. Kirk Ferentz dismissed the running back on January 3rd but it appears Robinson has a legit shot to get back with the team, albeit not until the fall.

As Lawrence Taylor came around the corner and sacked Theismann, his leg bent in a way that could only be described as something cartoon-ish.

He never really recovered physically from the play and still occasionally walks with a limp. But for the first time, we’re starting to see the effects of that injury on Theismann’s brain.

During a roundtable discussion on the NFL Network for these weekend’s playoff games, Theismann hilariously referred to Patriots running back Danny Woodhead as Danny Woodcock. Thankfully, “head” and “cock” are synonymous in many applications, so in essence, I can’t really fault Theismann too much here.

The lead-up for the Patriots-Jets playoff game this weekend has been nothing short of spectacular if you’re in the media.
But truly, the shot across the bow that has scored the most points came from soft-spoken Wes Welker yesterday in a press conference. It was subtle, and yet at the same time, so over-the-top hilarious that it’s honestly worthy of an Oscar nomination.

Just watch how many times the word foot is mentioned in this clip.

Well played Wes, well played sir. It appears the Rex Ryan “foot” fetish thing is still fresh on the minds of many in the NFL.

As if the Jets-Pats game this weekend needed yet another spark to the rivalry, defensive back Antonio Cromartie told the NY Daily News that he hated Tom Brady and that he was an ass—-. Apparently, having cool hair and a smoking hot girlfriend doesn’t endear you to your NFL peers.

Cromartie, in his first year with the Jets after four years with the Chargers, backed up Ryan Tuesday when he was asked by the Daily News if he’s ever seen Brady pointing after the Patriots score.

“We see that a lot. He does it a lot,” Cromartie said. “That’s the kind of guy he is. We really don’t give a damn, to tell you the truth.”

Okay, what kind of guy is Brady?

“An ass—-.

“—- him.”

You have to assume, given Darrelle Revis’ prowess, that Brady will probably be targeting Cromartie’s side of the field a bit more often this weekend. And now, given Cromartie’s recent foot in mouth incident (don’t get too excited Rex), it’s a wonder if Brady will make it a point to pick on him all day long.

If anything, this makes the build up for the game much more interesting. I fully expect a Patriots player to come to the aid of Brady by ripping on Cromartie’s inability to remember his kids names. In my opinion, it’s still THE highlight of the NFL season.

4

Amazingly, as the NFL regular season concluded, the second longest winning streak behind the New England Patriots belongs to the lowly Detroit Lions. Yes, after starting the season 2-10, the Motown scrappers somehow put together four straight wins to finish the season. Whether or not, they’ll be able to parlay that into some momentum next season remains to be seen but for a franchise that was so devoid of wins, it can only help.

2

Some might call them unlucky, others might say they lost games they should have won down the stretch. Regardless, the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Bucs are on the outside looking in for this year’s playoff run despite both winning 10 games. The Giants can point to their unbelievable collapse against Philly as the main culprit while Tampa Bay lost to the aforementioned Lions at home just in the last few weeks. A true case of “nobody to blame but yourselves.”

7-9

And of course, with two teams missing the playoffs with 10 wins, there had to be a team that made it with a losing record. Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks that won the abysmal NFC West with a 7-9 record. And they aren’t going to make any apologies for it either. “There is no apologies for making it into the playoffs. The easiest way to make it to the playoffs is to win your division, period, point-blank,” Seattle safety Lawyer Milloy said. “We did that.” If you’re looking for a team to bet against, yea, the Seahawks are a good choice.

73-71

John Fox, who coached the Carolina Panthers to a NFC title in 2003 and who still has a winning record for the franchise looks to be on his way out. In recent years, Fox’ teams have not fared so well, missing the playoffs the last two seasons respectively. However, it seems only a matter of time before the coach is picked up by another franchise, possibly the Browns as the coaching dominoes fall in the next few days.

In perhaps one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history, the Philadelphia Eagles stormed back from a 21-point deficit with seven minutes remaining against the New York Giants to win the game. It was capped off by this miraculous punt return for a touchdown by DeSean Jackson. Why the Giants didn’t kick it out of bounds was the talk of many analysts after the game.

Regardless, the return itself was the first time in NFL history a game had ended in regulation like that. A “walk-off” punt return if you please.

Not to be outdone though, Patriots offensive lineman Dan Connolly took a short squib kick against the Packers 71-yards and almost got in for a touchdown. Truly, one of the most exciting and most hilarious moments I can recall in an NFL game. Whether you are a Patriots fan or not, you were definitely rooting for the 313-pound big man to get into the end zone.

In a most surprising move, the Milwaukee Brewers made a trade that sent pitching prospects, shortstop Alcides Escobar, and outfielder Lorenzo Cain for Royals pitching phenom Zack Greinke. Many had thought Greinke would end up in a more prominent spot, perhaps in Texas or Detroit. But the Brewers were the team most willing to part with prospects and a team that Greinke couldn’t veto a trade with.

313

Earlier in Sunday’s NFL action, DeSean Jackson returned a punt as time expired giving the Eagles an incredible comeback win over the Giants. It was the first time in NFL history that a punt had been returned for a TD in regulation with no time remaining. Needless to say it was the biggest play in Sunday’s game…..until Dan Connolly came around. The 313-pound offensive linemen did the unthinkable, returning a kickoff 71 yards to the Packers 4-yard line. Even if you hate the Patriots like I do, it was one of the best football moments you’ll ever see.

88

Connecticut women’s basketball coach Gene Auriemma calls those rooting against his team “miserable people”. Apparently, you aren’t allowed to root for the underdog anymore. Auriermma’s team has dominated the college landscape for the better part of 3 years having not lost since 2007. While many enjoy watching a team like UConn blow out their competition, I fall more into the category of, “it’s bad for the game”.

26

The UConn women’s team might be on a historical winning streak, but it was the Detroit Lions who were drawing attention from fans Sunday. After 26 straight road losses dating back to 2007, the Lions beat the Tampa Bay Bucs in overtime 23-20. The team has come close several times away from Ford Field this year, most notably week 1 when they were robbed of a victory on the now infamous “Calvin Johnson rule”. But this time, even the officials couldn’t stop the Lions or Dave Rayner’s short field goal in overtime to win it.

The Metrdome roof collapsing has instantly become one of those videos you have to see. The roof, under the weight of heavy snow, collapsed as cameras caught the entire action inside the dome. The New York Giants-Minnesota Vikings game was later moved to Detroit’s Ford Field today and tickets are surprisingly free. The weather, however in Detroit, isn’t much better than Minneapolis. 48,000 people in the area are without power as the city tries to fight off this massive Midwest storm that has paralyzed the region.

369

I’m starting to believe that Tom Brady is either a sherpa or part polar bear. While everyone looked uncomfortable during the Patriots-Bears snowstorm game yesterday, Brady looked right at home. He passed for 369 yards and 2 TDs en route to a 36-7 beat down of the Bears at Soldier Field. His counterpart, Jay Cutler did not perform as well completing less than 50% of his throws and tossing two picks.

41

How far have the mighty fallen? The Miami Hurricanes hired Al Golden to replace Randy Shannon as head coach. Golden led the Temple Owls from a barely functional NCAA team to a MAC contender. The 41-year old, however, is not the big splash hire many “U” alums thought their school was capable of bringing in. But the days of Miami owning healthy recruiting grounds in the state of Florida are in the past and sadly, so is the football program.

A round of applause for former tennis great Martina Navratilova. Only months after undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer, Navratilova’s attempt to peak Mount Kilimanjaro was halted after she simply had trouble breathing. Despite her failure, Navratilova was able to raise $80,000 for philanthropic projects supported by the Laureus Sports Academy, an association of 46 sports stars.

Carmelo Anthony will not sign a $65-million dollar extension with the Denver Nuggets unless he is traded to New York says ESPN.com. Although Anthony has not ruled out playing in Denver entirely, this kind of ultimatum doesn’t exactly scream loyalty. “Whatever decision I make, that is going to be the first thing that gets done,” Anthony said of signing the extension.

Ravens fans were none too happy about losing to their rivals this past Sunday and they let coach John Harbaugh know about it on his weekly radio show. His response in not so many words? Piss off.

“I’m proud of this football team,” Harbaugh said in response to one call. “I’m proud of our defense. I’m proud of our offense. We will fight our tails off to be the best team we can every single week.

“If that’s not enough for you then go find another team to cheer for. If you’re not proud of this team then you don’t know football.”

I can understand the fans anger as losing to the Steelers for them is about as bad as it gets. However, how about the fans get some perspective about the situation. They’re 8-4 and barring catastrophe, will probably make the playoffs. As it stands now, the only team that is head and shoulders above everyone else in the AFC is the New England Patriots, and even they have problems they need to be addressed (offensive line).

Moreover, it’s fairly wide open this year and count me amongst those that wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see the Ravens make a run to the Super Bowl.

In a rather interesting move, the Denver Broncos fired Josh McDaniels after an abysmal start to the 2010 season. Following an 8-8 season last year, the expectations for McDaniels were the playoffs. But after some horrific losses and a Belichick-esque spygate scandal, it was only a matter of time before McDaniels was shown the door. Yet another disciple of the Patriots coach who has failed elsewhere.

72

Sadly, Don Meredith passed away yesterday at the age of 72. Meredith was a former Cowboys quarterback but will probably be most remembered for his days on the Monday Night Football broadcast with Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. R.I.P. Dandy Don.

Was that the Detroit Lions playing on prime time last night or did the Jets just suck that bad? Tom Brady threw for 326 yards and had 4 touchdowns in an absolute beat down of Rex Ryan’s team 45-3. Though Brady was not perfect in the literal sense of the word, his 148.9 QB rating was as close as it comes. His counterpart, Mark Sanchez was the complete opposite throwing three interceptions and was barely a blip on the Patriots radar.

106.7

Albert Haynesworth wanted everybody to know that he was indeed, not hungover last week and was instead just ill. Those were the rumors circulating on the web the last few days as Haynesworth was held out of Sunday’s game. Haynesworth pleaded his case to local radio station 106.7 but alas, the damage to his credibility has already been done.

Four finalists were named for the Heisman Trophy ceremony that will be held on Saturday. Among them, Cam Newton, who has fought back accusations of receiving money from Auburn boosters the last few months. The other candidates, LaMichael James, Andrew Luck and Kellen Moore certainly have a shot but this is Cam’s Heisman to lose. If voters ignore the scandal, he should win pretty handily.

Despite trailing at halftime to the Detroit Lions, the Patriots never seemed to go into panic mode. Tom Brady remained cool and collective leading New England to 35 second half points en route to a 45-24 win over the Lions. Brady was perfect in nearly every definition of the word with an unheard of 158.3 passer rating, the highest a quarterback can attain.

There’s a reason former first-round draft pick Roy Williams is not considered an elite receiver. As Williams headed into the end zone in what would have ultimately been the game winning touchdown yesterday, he was stripped from behind at the 11-yard line with three minutes left. And of course, the Saints marched right 89 yards down the field for the winning score.

There isn’t much else to say about the heart-warming tribute that CBS did for Chris Henry on their Thanskgiving day broadcast. It was truly touching and even choked this tough blogger up. After Henry’s passing in December of last year, his mother opted to donate his organs and it ended up saving the lives of four people. If you haven’t seen it yet, here is a link to it. Grab some tissues.

Thirteen time Grand Slam title holder Serena Williams will not be defending her 2010 Australian Open title in January of next year. Williams announced that she will be missing the tournament as she continues to recover from a foot injury that has sidelined her since after Wimbledon. Amazing that a piece of glass at a restaurant could cause this much damage. I’m willing to just come out and say it, Serena isn’t interested in playing anymore. Or at the very least, she wants to play on her own time

The Texas Longhorns regularly get the best recruits in the country and have often found themselves in BCS bowl games over the last decade. But after yet another loss at home to their rival, Texas A&M, the Longhorns will be on the outside looking in during this bowl season. A 5-7 season isn’t exactly a fireable offense in Austin, but Mack Brown better fix things heading into 2011.

Despite Vince Young’s stellar record as a starter in Tennessee and his .638 winning percentage, it appears his days in the Music City are numbered. After being booed and subsequently injured, Young made his way to the locker room to get taped up to return. But coach Jeff Fisher opted to go with rookie quarterback Rusty Smith and that sent Young into a tizzy. He allegedly threw his shoulder pads into the stands and stormed out of the media session in the post game. All in all, including the 19-16 loss to the Redskins, not a good day if you’re a Titans fan.

123.1

In the battle of the two best quarterbacks of the last decade, it was Tom Brady and his hair that came out on top. Peyton Manning had a 4th quarter comeback all but sealed up but threw a costly interception in the red zone. His numbers for the day were less than Peyton-esque too, four touchdowns with three interceptions. Brady, however, was his usual self. A ho-hum 186 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 123.1 passer rating.

4

The Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger case, for some reason, is still going on. I’d guess it’s because Jenn desperately wants to keep herself in the news. Regardless of the reason, the investigation movies into the CSI lab this week. “The NFL is conducting high-tech forensic work to trace the electronic pathways and transmission of any photos or messages that might have been sent during communication between them, according to a source familiar with the situation.”

45

As the days and weeks go on, I sincerely believe there’s now a chance that Derek Jeter, the pride of the New York Yankees, will be in a different uniform next year. After initially being offered a 3-year, $45 million dollar deal, Jeter and Yankees management have gone back and forth using the media as their middleman. It’s gotten so bad that Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, issued this statement yesterday. “Derek’s significance to the team is much more than just stats. And yet, the Yankees’ negotiating strategy remains baffling.”

9-6

The worst thing for Nebraska fans this weekend wasn’t the 9-6 loss to Texas A&M, no, that was the least of their concerns. Rumors began swirling late Saturday night into Sunday that their Heisman candidate and quarterback Taylor Martinez had quit the team. It had gone so viral that it was the #1 search on Google last night and it forced Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini to address it. “He’s still on the team,” Pelini said. We’ll see about that.

The bat that struck arguably the most memorable home run in baseball history was sold at auction early Sunday morning. Kirk Gibson’s 1988 World Series Game 1 dinger is widely remembered by sports fans because he was barely able to trot around the bases. Now, that historic moment along with several other pieces of memorabilia were sold for $1.265 million dollars.

25

The Detroit Lions pulled off yet another incredible feat on Sunday by losing their 25th straight game on the road. At times it seemed like the Lions weren’t even interested in winning as their high powered offense didn’t muster a touchdown until late in the game. To make matters worse, the Lions lost to the Buffalo Bills, a franchise in worse despair than they currently are. This marks the second year in a row they were able to give a team their first (and possibly) only win of the season.

7

Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans and media are apparently still up in arms about the whole Bill Belichick spygate scandal. Before yesterday’s game, a writer for Pittsburgh Live detailed how some in the organization felt about possibly being robbed of Super Bowl trips in 2001 and 2004. Defensive coordinator Dick LaBeau: “I don’t see how it could hurt ‘em,” LeBeau said. “But that’s not for me to decide.”

49-29

Maybe Todd Haley thought Josh McDaniels was running up the score on him or maybe he didn’t like his choice in hoodies. Regardless of the reason, the Chiefs coach refused to shake McDaniels hand after they were drubbed 49-29 yesterday. Sour grapes Todd.

5

It wasn’t just the Lions and Chiefs who laid stinkers yesterday, the New York Giants dropped the biggest turd of the day by letting the hapless Dallas Cowboys steamroll them at home. On the heels of the Wade Phillips firing this week, interim coach Jason Garrett seems to have re-energized the squad after a 5-game losing streak. Boisterous owner Jerry Jones offered his thoughts after the win: “It’s a good time to have a good feeling, we needed it. The players needed it and our fans needed it most of all. But it’s just that, a feel-good. We have to get a lot of things worked out.”

After some overnight speculation that included a preemptive tweet by Bill Simmons, Randy Moss was officially traded to the Minnesota Vikings. In exchange for Moss, the Patriots received a 3rd round pick in next year’s draft.

It’s been a tumultuous ride for the receiver the last few weeks. He openly complained about coaching/management in a press conference that lasted several minutes. Then this past Monday night, he caught no passes for the first time in his Patriots career and was only thrown at once the entire game.

Needless to say, he already had one foot out the door and management was more than willing to guide him completely out.
