Here’s some pictures from last night action.

At first, I thought this was pretty awesome (even if it is the Yankees). And then I took a look at some of the uploader’s past videos, and I’ll be damned, he’s made her do this before. Still adorable, nonetheless, but I am slightly disturbed at how infatuated the dad is with the Yankees. Hopefully, his New York sports love stops there because if he makes that kid in the background recite the Knicks starting five, that’s when I make a call to Child Protective Services.

Overall, the night wasn’t so bad for Cervelli. He was 3-3 with 2 RBI’s and bumped his average all the way up to .242. The Yankees did, however, lose to the Red Sox for the sixth straight time this year.

And if taking nut shots is going to improve your game, well then, the Yankees should have used A.J. Burnett’s balls as a piñata last night (5 2/3, 7 H, 7 ER).

The New York Yankees logo is arguably one of the most recognizable graphic designs in the world. Show someone on the streets of Hong Kong the top hat logo and they’ll automatically associate it with the Bronx bombers. But after almost 70 years a New York woman is now claiming that her uncle created it and never got paid.

In a complaint filed in Manhattan Federal Court, Tanit Buday claims her uncle Kenneth Timur was a graphic designer commissioned in 1936 to create a logo for the Yankees.
Buday says former Yankees owners Jacob Ruppert and Del Webb heard of Timur’s work from his sister, who worked in Brooklyn as a manicurist in the 1930s.
Timur, who lived in Europe at the time, created a logo that incorporated a top hat and bat similar to the one now used by the team.

Because he was living in Europe, he didn’t realize that the team was using it until he came over in 1947. So, in other words, the Yankees took advantage of a foreigner’s skills and didn’t pay them a decent wage. An all too common occurrence during that time period.

In one of the biggest trades in NBA history, Carmelo Anthony was finally dealt to the New York Knicks last night just a day after he said he would be playing for the Nuggets come Tuesday. Moral of the story? Athletes lie. The Knicks swooped in and gave up the house for Anthony. Here are the details: the Knicks will send Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who would get additional picks and cash. Along with Anthony, New York would acquire Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. New York will send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota as part of the deal in exchange for Corey Brewer. Wow, all that for a guy who is just a scorer, has no real leadership ability, and at most, has a $.10 brain. You’ll excuse me if I laugh at the Knicks for the rest of the day. This reeks of not only a James Dolan inspired move but an Isiah Thomas one to boot.

Kansas is still one of the favorites for the Final Four this year, they’re just going to have to do it without the services of Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor was suspended from the team for the dreaded violation of team rules. That can usually mean anything from drunk driving, to skipping classes, to impregnating the coach’s wife. Taylor played a pivotal role on the team averaging 8.8 points and 4.7 assists per game.

Hank Steinbrenner is no stranger to controversy having worked for his dad for the better part of his adult life. But his comments regarding the Yankees squad is rubbing a lot of players and fans the wrong way. Steinbrenner made this statement at spring training in Tampa, Florida yesterday. “I think, maybe, they celebrated too much last year,” Steinbrenner said Monday. “Some of the players, too busy building mansions and doing other things and not concentrating on winning. I have no problem saying that.” Well, Derek Jeter might have a problem with him saying that—he’s the only one building a mansion in Tampa.

Speaking of ornery old white men, Jim Boeheim had some choice words after his team beat Villanova last night in a battle of Big East powers. Boeheim, who reguarly schedules cupcakes in the non-conference is starting to feel the heat of a real schedule. I think that’s bulls**t,” Boeheim said. “It’s all bulls**t. We can play next week and get in the same game and lose. We can have 10 of these in a row and win them and then get in the (Big East or NCAA) tournament and lose. It’s all bulls**t.” Boeheim apparently really likes the word bulls**t.

The blockbuster deal that was supposed to send Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets is officially dead according to team owner Mikhail Prokhorov. For the time being, Carmelo will stay a Nugget and the Detroit Pistons Rip Hamilton will have to continue to ride the pine until a home is found for him. Anthony is having a good year but by his standards, his points per game is down from 28.2 to 23.5. Certainly doesn’t mean he’s lost his touch but maybe, just maybe the rumors are affecting his game.

Several sources in the Boston media are reporting that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be undergoing foot surgery yet again. The problem? A recurring and perhaps chronic condition that he has dealt with all season. It appears the surgery will be today but there is a chance Brady pushes it to Monday. How will this affect the team going forward? Who knows, but the amount of pressure on Brady to perform week in/week out without a supporting cast is starting to wear thin.

Carl Pavano and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a deal of two years and $16.5 million dollars. Pavano considered going to back to the Yankees where he struggled at times but ultimately thought that his performance last year in Minnesota earned him some time there again. “When you go through free agency, there’s a lot of big decisions that you have. Obviously I couldn’t walk away from the rapport I have with my teammates, the staff and the organization.”

If the Chicago Bears go to the Super Bowl, they’ll have some support from the Commander-in-Chief. Barack Obama has pledged that if his “hometown” Bears beat the Packers on Sunday, he’ll be in attendance at the Super Bowl in Dallas. Pretty brave statement considering Obama doesn’t even have tickets yet. Wonder who ends up paying for those? Hopefully not the taxpayers as lower level seats are going for as much as $1900.

Contrary to what Minnesota Vikings officials have been saying for days now, the Metrodome will not be ready for its last game of the 2010 campaign. The Vikings will instead use the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium. Oddly enough, the Monday night affair comes exactly 29 years to the day that a game was last played outside in Minnesota.

Days after just missing an upset of the Michigan State Spartans, the Oakland Grizzlies upset the #7 ranked Tennessee Vols 89-82. The reigning Summit League champs are no slouches, they have a center named Keith Benson that is a legit college big man and may very well play in the NBA one day. The near misses for Oakland have been plentiful this year. They played both Purdue and Illinois tough in the first half before faltering late in the game. Tennessee, it seems, did not take them seriously enough. That, or, maybe the Vols were just a tad overrated themselves.

Don’t blame that 2-11 Bengals start on the players, it’s on the coaches says wide receiver Terrell Owens. Way to deflect the blame there T.O. I’m sure Carson Palmer’s repeated pick-sixes have little to do with that record. “Of course, we have to go out there and play the game. But in order for us to do what we’re allowed to do at the best of our abilities, the coaches have to put the players in the best position.” Yes, I think I speak for everybody when I say, shut up T.O.

The fall of Mark Prior has to be one of the more fascinating but sad stories in baseball over the last decade. At one point, people were saying Prior could one day win multiple Cy Young awards and possibly get into the Hall of Fame. But after he peaked in the 2001 season with an 18-6 record and an All-Star game appearance, things have gone south for him. The Yankees are giving him one last shot signing him to a minor-league contract yesterday. If Prior does indeed make the big leagues, he’s due to make 750k.

In a rather surprising move, Phillies ace Cliff Lee decided to re-sign with the team after being courted by the Yankees and the Rangers for the last few weeks. The reported deal is 5-years, $120 million dollars, which allegedly is much less than what he could have gotten from other teams.

All that aside, the Phillies starting rotation is essentially one of the best (on paper) that MLB has ever seen. Lee joins Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. Even if you chalk one of those guys up to injury in the next few seasons, that’s a scary lineup of pitchers. While some teams hope to have one ace and maybe one up and comer at the back end of their rotation, the Phillies have four bona fide studs.

Lee’s agreement carries the third-biggest guarantee ever for a pitcher, behind CC Sabathia’s $161 million contract with the Yankees and Barry Zito’s $126 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. But in the end, his negotiations were as much about heartstrings as purse strings.

In July 2009, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. acquired Lee from the Cleveland Indians to be a stretch-drive savior in a pennant race. Lee helped pitch the Phillies into the playoffs and posted a 2-0 record with a 2.81 ERA in Philadelphia’s World Series loss to the Yankees.

Beyond that, Lee came to embrace the clubhouse culture in Philadelphia, and he and his wife, Kristen, quickly grew to love the city.

That last line is interesting only because Lee’s wife Kristen did indeed have some problems with Yankees fans during the World Series. Several news outlets reported that beer was thrown on her and fans from the upper deck were tossing loogies in her direction. Not sure if this ultimately played any part in Lee’s decision, but hey, why not speculate?

There was talk this week in Indiana that Peyton Manning was past his prime and he couldn’t get the job done anymore. Well, for at least one game, he seemed to have regained the touch that has made him one of the better quarterback of all-time. Manning threw for 319 yards and 2 TDs in the Colts win over the Titans last night. He was near perfect completing 25 of 35 passes en route to a 118.6 QB rating. Hopefully, that type of performance will hold off the fans for awhile.

It looks the Red Sox and Yankees are taking their rivalry into the off-season as well. Both teams have made splashes thus far, however, none was bigger than the Carl Crawford signing the other day for Boston. The Yankees are still trying to figure out a deal to get Cliff Lee for that 7th year but nothing has been determined as of yet. Stay tuned though–something may very well come down the pipes today.

After making the trek all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro for a fundraising event, 18-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova had to stop because of an illness. “Navratilova, 54, had to stop the climb of Africa’s highest mountain on the fourth day when the expedition had reached an altitude of 4,500 meters”. Nonetheless, fairly impressive for a women her age to be climbing mountains.

Newton reiterated that he has done nothing wrong when he decided to play for Auburn. “Newton’s father, Cecil, was found by Auburn and the NCAA to have asked for money from Mississippi State in exchange for a letter of intent from his son, a violation of NCAA rules. Cam Newton said, “Everything I’ve done at this university, I did it the right way,”. Yes, I’m sure you and your dad are working independently Cam. Sorry, I call b.s.

One of the big sticking points for the new NFL collective bargaining agreement will be the 18-game schedule. It’s definitely something owners are looking for but not something players necessarily want. Last year, the NFL set a record for numbers of players going on the IR and with the number of devastating helmet-to-helmet hits this year, it’s a wonder how some teams will field a squad with two more games.

Derek Jeter might be a valuable player to the New York Yankees but the question the last few weeks has been, how much? Jeter turned down $45 million from the Bronx Bombers just last week hoping for a longer deal…a deal it seems may never come. There are rumors that he wants as much as 6-years, $150 million dollars. If that’s the case, you can say goodbye to Derek in pinstripes.

A little over one year after a car accident and scandal rocked the now #2 ranked golfer in the world Tiger Woods, he’s taken to Twitter to try and win his fans back. He’s even engaging in a little back and forth with them answering questions directly. Unfortunately, none of them are about his wife or mistresses, more so “what’s your favourite course and why?”. Eh, those are softballs. Ask him about the pancakes at Perkins if you’re going to loft one up there like that.

Speaking of divorce, there may not be an uglier or more expensive one in sports than the Frank-Jamie McCourt one. Both had 11 days to consider a proposal to settle their case, and they still couldn’t come to an agreement. The blame here lies with Jamie though, as Frank agreed to it and seems to want to move past it. Now, it could be several more years before this is decided, which of course, leaves the Dodgers ownership in the balance.

One day after Cortland Finnegan and Andre Johnson were only fined $25k for essentially beating the crap out of each other, James Harrison was fined $25k for a hit on Ryan Fitzpatrick. The LeBron James PR nightmare train continues to roll. Only days after bumping into his coach, James makes his way back to Cleveland Thursday for his homecoming. And what a return it will be. Nothing short of a ticker tape parade with confetti falling I’m sure. Nobody knows what’s in store for LeBron other than the fans, but you can bet, security will be tight. And while I understand the frustration of Cleveland fans and think LeBron is a royal prick, uh, it’s just sports. Let’s all move on people. Ok fine, let’s move on after this game, I’ll give you that much.

Despite Vince Young’s stellar record as a starter in Tennessee and his .638 winning percentage, it appears his days in the Music City are numbered. After being booed and subsequently injured, Young made his way to the locker room to get taped up to return. But coach Jeff Fisher opted to go with rookie quarterback Rusty Smith and that sent Young into a tizzy. He allegedly threw his shoulder pads into the stands and stormed out of the media session in the post game. All in all, including the 19-16 loss to the Redskins, not a good day if you’re a Titans fan.

In the battle of the two best quarterbacks of the last decade, it was Tom Brady and his hair that came out on top. Peyton Manning had a 4th quarter comeback all but sealed up but threw a costly interception in the red zone. His numbers for the day were less than Peyton-esque too, four touchdowns with three interceptions. Brady, however, was his usual self. A ho-hum 186 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 123.1 passer rating.

The Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger case, for some reason, is still going on. I’d guess it’s because Jenn desperately wants to keep herself in the news. Regardless of the reason, the investigation movies into the CSI lab this week. “The NFL is conducting high-tech forensic work to trace the electronic pathways and transmission of any photos or messages that might have been sent during communication between them, according to a source familiar with the situation.”

As the days and weeks go on, I sincerely believe there’s now a chance that Derek Jeter, the pride of the New York Yankees, will be in a different uniform next year. After initially being offered a 3-year, $45 million dollar deal, Jeter and Yankees management have gone back and forth using the media as their middleman. It’s gotten so bad that Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, issued this statement yesterday. “Derek’s significance to the team is much more than just stats. And yet, the Yankees’ negotiating strategy remains baffling.”

The worst thing for Nebraska fans this weekend wasn’t the 9-6 loss to Texas A&M, no, that was the least of their concerns. Rumors began swirling late Saturday night into Sunday that their Heisman candidate and quarterback Taylor Martinez had quit the team. It had gone so viral that it was the #1 search on Google last night and it forced Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini to address it. “He’s still on the team,” Pelini said. We’ll see about that.

Felix Hernandez won only 13 games for the Mariners in 2010. That was more an indictment of Seattle’s putrid offense as opposed to Hernandez’ prowess on the mound. Thankfully, Cy Young voters saw right through that negligible stat and gave the American League award to “King Felix”. His final numbers on the season were astounding: 2.24 ERA, 232 strikeouts.

It’s not often you see fourteen goals in an entire game of hockey, let alone two periods. But that’s exactly what happened in last night’s affair between the Lightning and the Flyers. Steven Stamkos led the way with his second hat trick of the season en route to an 8-7 Tampa Bay win. Many are starting to wonder if Stamkos’ name can now be mentioned with Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin as the best players in the game. It might be a little early for the 20-year old, but thus far this season, he has been unworldly (35 points in 19 games).

The Chicago Bears are certainly making their case as the best team in the NFC. And it wasn’t that they shutout the Dolphins on the road last night, it’s that they absolutely dominated them allowing only 187 yards of total offense. Yes, their offense needs work and Jay Cutler isn’t the most trustworthy of quarterbacks, but in a year where most NFC teams are having problems off the field, the Bears are performing where it counts.

The fate of former MLB player Jim Leyritz now rests with a 6-person Florida jury. In December of 2007, Leyritz allegedly ran a red light while intoxicated and killed 30-year old Fredia Ann Veitch. His defense team is arguing that blood tests taken at the scene were unreliable. If convicted, Leyritz faces up to 15 years in prison.

It is not a matter of “if” Cam Newton is suspended, it is now a matter of “when”. As the FBI continues to look into the case, details of the payment plan have been leaked to the media. According to Kenny Rogers, one of the middlemen in the ordeal, a man named Bill Bell spoke to someone representing the Newton family and they asked for $80,000 the day after Cam Newton signed with MSU, $50,000 30 days later and another $50,000 30 days after that. A prankster pulled a fast one on ESPNU reporter Elizabeth Moreau. While staying in room 208 at Gainesville’s Hilton Garden Inn, a man called Moreau to tell her the hotel was on fire. After breaking some windows to try and get out the caller then told her: “that’s what you get for being a bad ex-wife” and further explained she was bad at ‘sucking dick. Um ok, awesome prank I guess.

It appears that current Detroit Pistons owner Karen Davidson will have a deal to sell the team by November 1st according to NBA Commissioner David Stern. At the Board of Governors meeting in New York, Stern opened with the impending Pistons sale in his opening statement. “It’s not as fast a track as Golden State, but we’re looking for something definitive to happen in the month of November.”

The most impressive number from the Oregon blow-out of UCLA last night wasn’t the score (60-13 if you fell asleep), it’s the number of first downs the Ducks had–32. When you constantly pick up 1st downs on um, 1st down, well then that kind of stuff is going to happen. On the other hand, time of possession could be costly sometime down the road for the defense. Almost 2-1 in favor of the Bruins last night.

LeBron James’ run with the Cavs was “7 years of joy” according to his Twitter account. This comes after a report that James dissed the city of Cleveland and its fans by telling them to “get over it”. Speaking of which Mr. James, mind getting over, uh, yourself.

Roy Halladay didn’t look like himself last night but alas, even 75% of him is good enough to win a playoff road game. Halladay hurt his groin and often rode the bike in between innings to stay loose. His pitch count was abnormally high early and somehow he sneaked out of the 6th inning having thrown 108 total while scattering 6 hits. The teams head back to Philly for Game 6. It’ll be interesting to see if both the Yankees and Phillies can pull off miraculous 3-1 deficits in the same year.

How bad has it gotten for the Pittsburgh Pirates? Royals bench coach John Gibbons said thanks but no thanks to their job opening. The Pirates last manager, John Russell, was let go by the franchise on Oct. 4th and it appears there aren’t many contenders lining up for the position. And really, can you blame them. Russell’s stint with the Pirates resulted in a 186-299 record.

The economy has hit the state of Michigan harder than any other area in the United States. So when the Detroit Pistons offered free season tickets to 50 die hard fans, you’d think people would jump at the chance. And while more than 300 people registered, only 11 showed up for auditions yesterday. A poor showing by both the Pistons PR/Marketing team and the fans themselves.

The NFL levied the fine two days ago and yesterday, Harrison was excused from practice as he contemplated whether he could play “in that kind of environment”. Lance Berkman has played 717 games at first base in his career. After taking a tumble last night, he almost didn’t make it to 718 this year. Filling in for the Yankees’ Mark Texiera who is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, Berkman wiped out and hit his head chasing a foul ball last night. Thankfully for Yankees fan and well, Berkman, he was able to somehow finish the game with the aid of smelling salts and some new spikes.

Manchester United star forward Wayne Rooney has made it clear he does not want to stay with the team. Despite his success along with the teams, Rooney said he wanted assurances from the club that they would still go out and attract the top players in the world. After losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in the offseason, ManU did not make an attempt to replace them with high profile players. Evidently, the $258 million the team held in cash reserves is being used for uh, more important things.

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has not lost a bout in six years but that’s not enough proof of his dominance from his rivals. Derek Chisora, who is fighting Klitschko in December said that he’s not impressed by the champion. “The best thing about IBF, IBO and WBO champion Klitschko is his ring entrance”, said Chisora. Color me shocked–some smack talk before a boxing bout. Wake me up when the heavyweight championship actually means something again.

In 1994, Magic Johnson bought a stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, 4.5 percent to be exact. Sixteen years later, the “Laker for life” has sold his share to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. Though the numbers have not been released the actual value of Johnson’s stake was right around 30 million dollars. However, as Darren Rovell of CNBC reported, the good doctor probably paid more than two times that amount. So, all in all, it’s fair to say Magic is a wise investor.

According to his father, Robbie Hummel will return to the Purdue lineup next season after suffering a torn ACL Saturday. The announcement was a bit surprising to some as Hummel will graduate in May and a jump to the European leagues made the most sense. But Hummel will bring his 15.7 ppg back to West Lafayette in 2010-2011 on a medical hardship waiver and hope he can lead the Boilermakers to that Final Four they’ve so desperately wanted.

The winner of the Detroit Marathon Sunday? A guy who had never run one before. Jordan Desilets of Pinckney completed the 26.2 mile trek in the slowest time ever for a winner in the race. The leader, Eastern Michigan teammate Boaz Cheboiywo, dropped out at the 23 mile mark because of leg problems.

1976 Formula One Champion James Hunt was as busy off the track as he was on. According to a new biography, Hunt had a two week run in Tokyo where he bedded 33 different British Airways’ flight attendants. Well, at least I know what airline I’ll be flying next time I make a trip across the pond. Mile High orgy here I come.

Cliff Lee’s masterful performance last night led to the worst shutout in Yankees’ postseason history. Lee threw 122 pitches, 82 of which were strikes and allowed only 2 hits over 8 innings. The Rangers now have a 2-1 advantage over the Yankees in the best of 7 series. The Yankees send out struggling right-hander A.J. Burnett in Game 4 and you have to wonder now if they wished anybody else on their staff could go.

In a weekend full of body-crunching hits and injuries, Monday night proved no different. Both starting quarterback were forced out of the game–David Garrard with a concussion and Vince Young with a sprained knee. Young’s absence was hardly noticed on the field though as Collins and the rest of the team picked up the slack in a relatively easy win over the Jaguars, 30-3.

After only their third win in almost two years, the Detroit Lions boast a paltry .067 winning percentage. But let’s not rain on their parade too much. Their dominating win over the Rams Sunday showed teams that the Lions aren’t the pushover most thought they were this year. In fact, had it not been for one of the stupidest rules in sports during Week 1, you’re arguably looking at the best .500 team in the NFL.

Yet again, more problems at the Commonwealth games. Although, this one is probably more on the athletes themselves. Nigerian sprinter Osayomi Oludamola tested positive for Methylexanemine and her 100-meter win will more than likely be stripped. Oddly enough though, the substance can be found in OTC nutritional supplements and cooking oils. Given the Commonwealth games’ problems with sanitation, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was found in the drinking water too.

According to the NFL, there are roughly 175 concussions a year. The latest culprit was none other than Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who suffered the injury on the last offensive play of the game versus the Redskins. No word yet on his status for next week.

We certainly applaud the regular season effort from the Minnesota Twins the last few years. But their playoff performances leave a lot to be desired. They lost in the first round…..AGAIN and were swept by the New York Yankees ….AGAIN. It’s starting to become a yearly tradition folks. The loss marked the Twins’ 12th straight in postseason play. That level of ineptitude has only been matched by one other organization, the Boston Red Sox, who boast 13 consecutive losses on their resume.

There simply isn’t a rock big enough to hide a person after three errors in a playoff game. So in a way, we feel for Braves second baseman Brooks Conrad.
