The only reason for there to be trending topics on Twitter is so the company can make a little money by letting gullible companies buy the top spot. Otherwise, they only serve as a peek into the minds of the world’s worst people, people too dumb to think of something to Tweet about so they follow the herd like lemmings off a cliff.

One of the most interesting things about Twitter is the ability of global trends to go completely misunderstood by ignorant Americans. When Oasis singer Noel Gallagher played his old band’s hit “If I Had A Gun” at a concert in Argentina, the title soon hit the trending topics list. But once it was there, people started taking it a little too literally.

Okay, that last one? That’s basically guaranteeing you a visit from the Secret Service. And they’re not looking to sell you cookies. The sad thing is, it’s really not even that hard to get a gun these days. Sure, there’s a waiting period, but think of it like the Fail Whale: once it’s over, you’re free to spray your violent idiocy all over the world.

The death of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys came as a shock to Twitter, and tons of people expressed their regrets. Many of those people, however, didn’t really know who Adam Yauch was. Here’s a hint: he wasn’t Ad-Rock.

After some more reasonably-minded people started protesting the hashtag, it brought out waves of manchildren saying things like “Rape is just a word, maaaan.” Here’s a little thought experiment for you: walk up to a woman you want to have sex with someday and tell her “rape is just a word.” See how far you get.

The victim is also said to have been beaten. Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said this morning, “She was a runaway since March and there was a pimp involved. She got punched in the face. We’re not sure who did it.”

Taylor played his entire career with the New York Giants of the National Football League and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Taylor has had a history of drug-related issues, admitting to using drugs such as cocaine while in the NFL and was suspended several times for failing drug tests. After his retirement he was arrested three times for attempted drug possession, but has claimed to be drug-free since 1998.

A county attorney in Kansas violated a girl’s privacy by showing around photos of her sexual assault, the teen and her mother claim in Topeka Federal Court. The Anderson County Attorney refused to prosecute the assailant, but showed other parents photos of the sexual assault, and was suspended from practicing law for 6 months for it, the family says.

The parents say their 17-year-old daughter attended an outdoor party in May 2007, where four men or boys forced her to take off her clothes. One of them had sex with her in the bed of a truck, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop, while others took photos of it, according to the complaint.

The girl says that she reported the assault to police, who referred it to County Attorney Frank Campbell.

She says Campbell “decided he would not pursue prosecution of the male” involved in the sexual assault, but told a local newspaper that he would share the pictures with parents of the minors at the party.

I have to admit that I look at these stories a bit differently than most people. My girlfriend goes to law school and she’s always trying to impart wisdom from that experience to me and, I have to say, sometimes it rubs off and I’ve started to feel as though I have a cursory understanding of how our American legal system really works. Though now, I have to think she hasn’t learned too much about the law yet…since she’s never showing me photos of nude 17 year-olds. Maybe that comes in the third year. Fingers crossed!

A North Carolina man is accused of arranging to have his wife raped through personal ads on the Web site Craigslist, police said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old man, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred at his home early Sunday, police said in a statement.

But on Tuesday, police found that the man “had responded to at least two personal ads on Craigslist.com in an effort to arrange for someone to come to his home and have sex with his wife using some type of scare tactic.”

“Investigators believe [he] arranged this incident without the knowledge or consent of the victim,” the police statement said.

The woman was taken to a hospital after the assault, where she underwent a forensic examination and was interviewed, police said. She suffered no serious physical injuries and was released shortly afterward.

It’s unclear if the husband did this as some sort of twisted sexual fetish or if he did it to f with his wife. Either way, I think we can all agree that this isn’t the funniest prank involving forcible sodomy that’s been pulled. Phoenix police arrested a man in Phoenix on Monday on suspicion of raping an unconscious woman live on a popular video hosting Web site.

According to a court document, on Feb. 26, 2009, at about 5 a.m., 20-year-old Jonathan Hock set up the webcam built into his laptop and broadcast live as he sexually assaulted a woman whom he knew for less than a month as she lay in bed unconscious. The victim had reportedly been asleep for up to six hours before the assault occurred.

While being interviewed by Phoenix police, the woman said she became aware of the assault after friends text messaged her about the video. According to a court document, the woman then found pictures on the Web site of Hock lying next to her as she was asleep and naked from the waist down.

Phoenix police issued a search warrant for the Web site’s content to try to obtain the live video of the assault. In the video, Hock reportedly made comments about him being able to commit the assault without her knowledge while he performed various sexual acts, according to the court document.

Police say Hock is allegedly very popular on the site for his sexual behavior, and they said information they received through the investigation indicates there may have been similar acts of this type involving this suspect.

This is appalling. I’d expect much more reasonable behavior from a group of anonymous Internet individuals gathering around online watching a stranger take part in bizarre sexual activity. If I can’t trust several dozen guys jerking off in their rooms to another man’s sexual deviancy, who can I trust? I expect much more from Rapingoncamera.org.

Lujan, who denies the charges, quit the jail after her bosses started investigating her.
A tip from inmates spurred the investigation. Now investigators have hundreds of phone calls between the two.

“The sheriff’s office is recommending that she be charged with criminal sexual penetration in this case,” said DA spokesman Pat Davis. “It’s a second degree felony because it involves a person of authority — in this case, a correctional officer.”

Lujan could be hit with a rape charge for each time she had sex with the inmate, Eric Brayman, even if she didn’t force the inmate.

“Although we can’t speculate whether it was consensual or not, the law doesn’t make an exception for that,” Davis said.

Taguba included allegations of rape and sexual abuse in his report, and on Wednesday he confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that images supporting those allegations were also in the file.

“These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency,” Taguba, who retired in January 2007, was quoted as saying in the paper.

He said he supported Obama’s decision not to release them, even though Obama had previously pledged to disclose all images relating to abuses at Abu Ghraib and other U.S.-run prisons in Iraq.

“I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one,” Taguba said. “The sequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them, and British troops who are trying to build security in Afghanistan.

“The mere depiction of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it.”

Detective Randy Ritchason said the girl had some type of sexual contact with three other children – two boys and a girl -all under the age of 10. She was charged in Muskingum County Juvenile Court.

“I believe it’s the youngest perpetrator we’ve had,” Ritchason said. “We’ve had young teens before, but she is about the youngest I’ve ever dealt with.”

Rhonda Hinkle, a supervisor with Muskingum County Children’s Services, said the girl is a very rare case, but her office is continually seeing more and more children who are committing sex crimes, not just being victims.

“I think a lot of it has to do with society today,” Hinkle said. “We have so many blended families today, we have all the technology that children at young ages are allowed access to and we have entirely different sets of values and issues then ever before.”

“I think people need to understand the charge of rape means any type of penetration there is during the act, no matter how slight,” Ritchason said. “It doesn’t necessarily mean a suspect has someone tied down or beats them and then rapes them. A person under the age of 18 doesn’t have to be forced, either.”

So did she actually have sex with them? Penetrate them willingly with a Big Bird dildo? Who knows?

That doesn’t sound like a good thing for our freedoms. I mean, yeah, kids under a certain age shouldn’t be boning. It’s just bad for them and kind of creepy. But at the same time, she says ANY PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 18 can be a victim of “rape,” even when they’re a willing participant. So if I were 16 and had sex with a 28 year-old woman by some grace of God and charity on her part, there’s a chance she’d end up tried for rape. Which is not okay. We should be offering this fictional woman tax credits and hugs for her contributions to teenage fantasies, not persecuting her.

Unrelated, any sex of an adult with an 11 year-old is still rape. No matter how many video games and glasses of wine mixed with Pepsi are exchanged or no matter how much she believes that her parents died in a tragic spelunking accident. The more you know.

A western Pennsylvania mother has been charged with giving her 13-year-old daughter drugs and alcohol so the woman’s boyfriend could get the girl pregnant, police said Thursday.

Shana Brown, 32, is no longer able to have children but wanted to have a baby with her current boyfriend, Duane Calloway, said Uniontown Police Det. Donald Gmitter. The pair decided to drug the girl so Calloway, 40, could have sex with her without her knowledge, he added.

Brown has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was to turn herself into police later Thursday, Gmitter said. Brown’s attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.

Calloway faces several counts of attempted rape. He was arrested Wednesday and remains in Fayette County Jail. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney

The girl told police the plot was apparently hatched sometime in December after she rejected her mother’s proposal that she allow Calloway to impregnate her and then marry him.

In the following months, Calloway attempted to rape the girl three times, Gmitter said.

The first time, in February, the girl was alone with Calloway while her mother went out to buy pizza, according to the criminal complaint. Calloway began groping her and she kicked him away, the documents stated.

A few weeks later, the girl believes her mother spiked her Pepsi with rum, according to police. The girl told them she felt ill after drinking the Pepsi, passed out and later threw up. She was also partially naked when she woke up and Calloway was in the room, according to the criminal complaint.

In fairness, the mom DID ask the daughter first. So, that’s pretty much license to rape and druggings, right? Otherwise, man, I really did not learn anything from my Mike Tyson etiquette class.

The problem other than the druggings and rape (which is a pretty big leap of faith to take, I know) is that the mom and boyfriend didn’t really think outside the box. She would probably need to be sexually active, first of all, in order for her to be pregnant and not instantly know mom and Boyfriend McRapekit weren’t at fault. And second, how about you try a turkey baster? Did it have to be rape? Do you have to DOUBLE the trauma to your daughter? Moms trying to impregnate their daughters with their boyfriends’ sperm really don’t think enough these days.

But when you pass at a fourth of July picnic, there are some expectations that you concede. Even if it is all family members. I was asking for it with my coy smiles and friendly banter.

But yeah, I think it’s probably not okay for Fox News to be making rape jokes. I mean, I make rape jokes and no one is like, “Oh, well, you’re a legitimate news source.” But Fox is. They get quoted and cited and stuff. So I guess my question is, if Fox News is making rape jokes, how long until I break a major story? Answer: Probably never, unless the story involves rape jokes.
