In a nasty collision with Manu Ginobili, Griffin’s tooth brutally went through his lip.
The best part of the aftermath was this fan behind the Clippers bench. He goes through a wide array of emotions before finally pulling out his cell phone to document it.

Griffin received stitches at halftime to close the wound. Suffice it to say, he’ll need to see a dentist sometime today as well. Preferably one who performs better under pressure than the Clips.

The San Antonio Spurs are back from the dead. Facing elimination at home against the 8th seeded Memphis Grizzlies, Manu Ginobili and Gary Neal hit incredible shots in the last 10 seconds to push the game into overtime. Here’s video of Neal’s three-point dagger at the buzzer that all but killed these Memphis announcers spirits.

The Spurs went on to win rather easily in the extra frame, pushing the series to 6 games. Many believe the Ginobili and Neal shots were turning points as the Spurs, thus far, have been rather lackluster in the postseason. But they’ll still have to go into a hostile Memphis environment where they have yet to win a game in this series.

Nobody wants to play the Ohio State Buckeyes right now, especially with the way they’ve been shooting. A few nights back, Jon Diebler went 10-12 behind the arc tying a Big Ten record for three-pointers in a game. But yesterday’s team performance against Wisconsin was even better. At one point, the Buckeyes sank 14 in a row in their quest to avenge an earlier loss to Wisconsin at the Kohl.

7

It was just a few weeks back that the Los Angeles Lakers looked like a dysfunctional team. Multiple losses in a row and a couple in blowout fashion. Some wondered if the back-to-back champs had lost their lust for regular season basketball and were just trying to cruise their way into the playoffs. But a bulb went off for Kobe Bryant two weeks ago and since then, the Lakers have reeled off seven in a row including a dominating win over the league-leading San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.

4:36

With 4:36 remaining in the third quarter, the entire New Orleans Hornets franchise and fans held their collective breath. While driving to the lane Chris Paul collided with another player and grabbed at his neck. He laid on the ground for several minutes before a stretcher took him off the court and to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, CP3 will make a recovery as it appears he just has a “jammed neck” of sorts.

68

One of the first teams to punch their ticket to March Madness was the Indiana State Sycamores of the Missouri Valley conference. In a year where the Sycamores were picked to finish 7th in the league, they beat a heavily favored Missouri State team. And now they must watch and wait, hoping for one of the at-large bids in the 68 team tournament. Unfortunately for MSU, they don’t nearly have the quality wins that many other teams on the bubble do.

With three seconds left, North Carolina had put the game in the hands of 18-year old freshman Harrison Barnes-and he didn’t fail to deliver. Trailing 70-69 against FSU, Barnes lifted from the top of three-point arc for the game-winning shot. People have been waiting all year for the freshman to live up the recruiting hype and now that North Carolina is in position for a strong seed in the tourney, it appears he’s arrived at the right time.

50

Despite losing star point guard Tony Parker for a few weeks, things are looking on the up and up for the San Antonio Spurs. After last night’s win against the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers, the Spurs reached the 50-win plateau yet again during Gregg Popovich’s tenure as coach. Time and time again, Pop has reiterated that he’d like to rest players down the stretch so they’re fresh for a deep playoff run. Parker may hinder that a little but if they can get a big enough lead, I don’t see guys like Tim Duncan suiting up the last week of the season.

We are about 14.5 hours away from the NFL locking out players in what will arguably be the dumbest decision the league has ever made. However, there is a last ditch effort to avoid the scenario as the union will meet with league officials all day today to try and get a deal done. Federal mediation, which seems to have sped things along has been helpful but unless names are on a dotted line soon, the rhetoric will get real nasty between players/owners.

Mark this date down folks when the Chicago Cubs inevitably win the 2011 World Series–LOL! Only a few days into spring training and there’s already been a spat in the Cubs dugout. No, this one did not involve Carlos Zambrano, although I’m sure he was itching to throw punches. This latest spat involved some horrendous defense behind pitcher Carlos Silva from Aramis Ramirez in the first inning. When they returned to the dugout, some words were exchanged and the two had to be separated. Mid-season form I tell ya.

The San Antonio Spurs had gone the whole year without any significant injuries so you could almost say they were overdue. Tony Parker will miss 2-4 weeks with what is being described as a strained calf. At 49-10, the Spurs have the best record in the NBA and won’t miss Parker too much, even if there is a short losing streak. But Gregg Popovich’s goal was to rest his guys the last 10 games of the year. With this injury, that doesn’t look like a luxury they can afford.

8-0

KSU started the second half on an 8-0 run and never looked back en route to their biggest win of the year over Texas. The win almost certainly puts the Wildcats in the tourney now, after months of somewhat mediocre play. For Texas, it’s their second loss in as many days and fans are probably starting to wonder if this is the annual Rick Barnes collapse. Although, in fairness, he usually waits till March for that to happen.

Folks, calm yourselves, but we are on the brink of an NFL lockout. Though the two sides have met repeatedly the last few weeks, no agreement has been made and with the deadline looming on March 4th, it doesn’t appear that things will get done before then. There are those that are optimistic about the situation including newly hired coach Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers, “Everything is hypothetical right now,” new San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I’m just optimistic we can get something done.” For the fans sake, let’s hope so.

In a rather strange move, Washington Wizards point guard Mike Bibby passed on his $6.2 million dollar salary next season and opted for a buyout from the team. I’m guessing things are THAT bad in Washington. Bibby now has the opportunity to play wherever he wants as a free agent and rumors are already spreading that he prefers South Beach although Boston, Portland, L.A., and San Antonio are going to be in the mix as well.

A one-eyed, alien looking Steve Nash led the Phoenix Suns to a stunning series sweep over the Spurs yesterday. The injury occurred in the 3rd quarter when Tim Duncan’s elbow inadvertently struck Nash above the eye requiring six stitches. But that didn’t stop Nash from coming back into the game and scoring 10 of his 20 points in the pivotal 4th quarter.

This was sweet redemption for the Suns organization as a whole, who had been eliminated by the Spurs 4 times in the last 7 years.

And while many are saying that Nash’s eye injury was the most grotesque they’d ever seen, it pales in comparison to the Hasim Rahman “head knot” from a fight in 2002.

I’m not sure what’s more shocking here…

That Manu Ginobili has that kind of vertical,
or
that he didn’t try to flop in the process

Impressive nonetheless. Especially since it came against the NBAs leading scorer and 6’9″ Kevin Durant. Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks went so far as to call it a “Superhero” play. Ginobili was a bit more modest though

“I was more expecting to be dunked on, to tell you the truth,”

“He’s really long, very athletic,” Ginobili said. “So I went up to see what would happen. Of course I wasn’t going to let him score an easy two.”

I’m guessing Ginobili is ignoring all those times he attempted a flop only to get dunked on in the process. Those obviously don’t count.

Durant’s streak of scoring 25 points or more ends at 29 games {ESPN}
