Seven minutes into the Serbia-Italy soccer match, all hell broke loose. Fireworks and flares were thrown on the field and barriers were broken in what police described as a calculated riot. After it was all said and done 17 were interested including the Serbian ringleader. As always, soccer always seems to bring out the best in people.

The Red Wings’ Kirk Maltby finally decided to call it quits after 16 years in the NHL. And what a ride it’s been for the gritty forward–908 games played and more importantly, a key role player in the Wings 4 Stanley Cup runs. Maltby was demoted to the minors just a few days ago but opted instead to retire and focus on his family.

Cliff Lee’s 11 strikeouts proved to be the deciding factor in the Rangers victory over the Rays last night. The win vaulted them into a showdown for a trip to the World Series with the Yankees. Lee will need to be just as efficient as the Yankees who boast a much more powerful lineup. Our prediction? Yankees in 6.

England is using “soccer ambassador” David Beckham to try and get the 2018 World Cup. Organizers aren’t sold that England possesses the right criteria to host the event. Nevermind that South Africa was one of the poorest countries in the world and had little to no soccer infrastructure just a few years before the 2010 World Cup. Politics is a dirty game and it appears FIFA is mired in it.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf called it quits almost 9 years ago from the NBA. But now after 586 regular season games, he is making a return….to the BJ-league. Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. The BJ league is Japan’s equivalent to the NBA. And 41-year old Rauf will call Kyoto his home for the time being. But yea, BJ…thanks Japan. You provide quality porn and laughs in the morning.

“Confessions of an agent” will hit the news stands later this week but you can read Josh Luch’s account online. In one of the more damning pieces in quite awhile, Luchs details how he gave more than 30 players money in an attempt to get them as a client. Amongst those listed Mel Kiper, Jeremy Shockey, and Jonathan Ogden. If you do nothing else today, read it. Compelling stuff.

The last game of the Acropolis International Basketball Tournament turned out to be more than the players and fans expected. In fact, the game never even concluded as benches cleared from both Serbian and Greek sides.

The man throwing the chairs and otherwise acting like a huge coward is none other than Oklahoma City Thunder center Nenad Krstic. Despite the fact that he’s 7’0, 240 lbs, Krstic repeatedly threw punches from behind in the pile. When finally confronted by Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis, Krstic “Usain Bolt-ed” across the court. Then, with several people in front of him, Krstic threw a chair with absolutely no accuracy and hit someone else.

It didn’t end there though. Fighting continued into the tunnel leading to the locker room.

The players exited toward the locker rooms and fought in the tunnel leading from the arena before eventually being separated. The fighting happened about six minutes after Serb coach Dusan Ivkovic was ejected with two technical fouls for arguing heatedly with a referee.

The Acropolis tournament must be one fierce battle between these two countries. A brief glimpse into the history of the games reveals Greece, Serbia, or the former Yugoslavia winning 17 of the 19 times. Who knew that southeastern European countries were so dominant in basketball.

German soccer fans erect phallic trophy

Germany’s World Cup start couldn’t have gone better. In fact, you could say after their 4-0 drumming of Australia, that they looked to be one of the favorites in South Africa. But in a matter of moments against Serbia, a solid German team became uh, flaccid.

After losing Miroslav Klose to a red card, Serbia scored only minutes latter and defeated the heavily favored Germans 1-0. Compounding their problems was a missed penalty kick by Lukas Podolski in the 60th minute.

Oh yea, and their fans, they erected this trophy.

If that’s an exact replica of the World Cup trophy, well then, I think the male dominated FIFA administration has some serious penis envy.

Soccer game goes on after fan is shot in the stands

I’d love to add commentary here about people taking sports too seriously and/or soccer hooligans continuing on with tradition of rowdiness, but I think the title speaks for itself.

In a local club soccer game in Serbia between Red Star and OFK Beograd, a fan was shot in the abdomen amidst a brawl. The game went on interrupted because as we all know, the show must go on. Apparently, none of the players flinched or anything when they heard a gunshot. You might argue that hearing a gun shot over 20 or 30 thousand people might be difficult, but then again here’s video from a recent Red Star game.

I think I see like 10 people in the stands. 50 yard line seats don’t seem to be too popular in Serbia these days.

For what it’s worth, the fan is in stable condition at a local hospital. As stable as one can be after being shot I guess.

Serbian game show hosts care about their contestants

Anyone that was a part of the former Soviet Union should probably be feared. Here’s further proof, via BestWeekEver and I guess Failblog, of why: They will let you die before their eyes.

There really aren’t many more ways you can show you don’t care if someone lives or dies than going back to the camera other than perhaps trying to discreetly kick her under the rug so no one notices. Which requires way too much strength in your quadriceps I feel.

There are also few totally-not-your-fault things more embarrassing than passing out like that. It’s such a protracted situation because first you look wobbly and then you move like you’re being seen in someone’s dream sequence and fall down. And then someone fs you, naturally. I mean, what else are they supposed to do to wake you up? I’m not made of smelling salts.
