From behind their bedroom doors, more than one out of every 10 teenagers has posted a nude or seminude picture of themselves or others online — a “digital tattoo” that could haunt them for the rest of their lives, according to a study released Monday.

Aside from the nudity, the survey found that at least a quarter of the young people polled had posted something they later regretted, made fun of others or created a false identity online.

While teens are spending more and more time on social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace — with 22 percent saying they check their sites more than 10 times a day — they don’t seem to be aware of the long-term personal havoc they could create with a click of a button.

And their parents generally have little idea about what their children are up to, the poll found.

“We’ve got to stop kidding ourselves about this,”said James Steyer, chief economic officer and founder of San Francisco-based Common Sense Media, which commissioned the study. “There are enormous consequences from inappropriate behavior online.”

A 15-year-old San Jose girl whose claim that she was kidnapped set off a dramatic rescue scene at San Leandro Home Depot on Sunday confessed to police later that night that she lied about the abduction.

San Jose police spokesman Jermaine Thomas said the teen was a runaway and didn’t want to get in trouble for taking off with a 28-year-old man.

“She didn’t want to get in trouble because she was seeing someone who she wasn’t supposed to be seeing,” he said.

The girl was first reported missing Saturday. She led police to believe she was kidnapped in San Jose, then pretended she was being held against her will while at a Home Depot the next day.

As store employees stepped in to assist the teen, the alleged suspect, reportedly armed with a knife, fled toward Interstate 880, according to San Leandro police. He was found hiding in nearby bushes and arrested.

Dozens of Gig Harbor High School students demonstrated outside the school Monday to protest an official’s decision to show parents surveillance video of their daughter kissing another girl.

The controversy arose after the school’s dean of students, Keith Nelson, saw the two kissing and holding hands and found video of it on the surveillance system. He showed it to the parents of one of the girls because they had asked to be kept apprised of her behavior.

The parents moved the girl to a different school district after watching it.

Classes continued during the disruption, said Principal Greg Schellenberg. He said he congratulated the students on holding a peaceful demonstration. The protesters wore T-shirts that said “free love” and waved peace signs.

Schellenberg agreed that it was wrong to show the surveillance video to the parents, and said that from now on school officials may only use the surveillance for security monitoring and discipline for actions such as trespassing, vandalism and fighting.

You really have to be careful with students’ rights. If two girls are making out, who’s to say they’re wrong? I’m sure he doesn’t do the same thing for heterosexual make-out sessions. Then again, I wonder what we’re missing in this story. If there are beads being thrown at the girls or body shots beforehand, then we may be slightly overstepping what’s appropriate at school. It was a field trip of sorts for high school cheerleaders — to a male strip club.

Lori Epperson has resigned from her teaching position in southwest Ohio.

A Butler Tech school district spokesman says Epperson took four girls to a strip club.

Epperson told school officials she had gotten permission from the parents of the 17- and 18-year-olds to bring them to Club Masque in Dayton.

She says the girls asked her to take them to the bar.

Health officials have identified an outbreak of syphilis occurring among teenagers younger than age 18 in central Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State Department of Health officials are alarmed because syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease most often seen in older age groups and can have significant health outcomes if undiagnosed and untreated, KOCO-TV reported. Officials are also concerned that the outbreak may spread to counties beyond central Oklahoma.

They reported that 10 teenagers have been diagnosed with syphilis in central Oklahoma during the past four weeks, compared to 15 teens with the disease all of last year.

Health officials believe the growing popularity of teens attending parties where unprotected group sexual activity is encouraged may be fostering the opportunities for teens to become infected, they said in a news release.

“The good news is that syphilis can be identified by examination and testing, cured with antibiotics and, through disease investigation, the spread of syphilis can be stopped,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley in the news release.

A 14-year-old Israeli girl has got a divorce from her 17-year-old husband, making her what media are describing as the country’s youngest divorcee.

The divorce came after a rabbinical court ruled that their wedding met the major requirements of Jewish law.

The two sweethearts had exchanged vows in front of friends, exchanged a ring, and the union had been consummated.

When her parents found out what had occurred, they insisted on a religious divorce, which she initially refused.

Teens who prefer popular songs with degrading sexual references are more likely to engage in intercourse or in pre-coital activities, U.S. researchers say.

Dr. Brian A. Primack of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine says the study demonstrates that, among this sample of young adolescents, high exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex in popular music was independently associated with higher levels of sexual behavior. In fact, exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex was one of the strongest associations with sexual activity.

Surveys were completed by 711 ninth-grade students at three large U.S. urban high schools. The participants were exposed to more than 14 hours each week of lyrics describing degrading sex. About one-third said they had previously been sexually active.

The study, scheduled to be published in the April issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, says those with the most exposure to the lyrics describing degrading sex were more than twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse, compared to those with the least exposure.

Six middle school students could face child porn charges after a boy took a nude photo of his 13-year-old girlfriend and “sexted” it to his pals’ cell phones, cops said.

The six boys, ages 12 to 14, will be summoned to Falmouth District Court for a hearing to determine whether they should be charged with possessing, exhibiting or distributing child porn in the form of a text message photo, according to The Cape Cod Times.

Columbia University Professor Sari Locker said surveys suggest one in five teens has sent or received nude or semi-nude pictures. “When boys receive a nude picture of a girl, they think the next time they see her they can go further with her in a sexual way than before,” she said. “It becomes an invitation to advance a sexual relationship.” But Locker said she believes criminal charges are excessive: “Clearly these boys are not sexual predators or pedophiles.”

Acknowledging that a societal double standard exists, a judge on Monday sentenced a 38-year-old woman to a two- to four-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

“Like it or not, an underage boy having sex with an older-aged girl is viewed differently than the other way around,” Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge Robert Lynn said before handing down the sentence on Nashua resident Robin Mowery.

A trio of Anderson girls are in hot water with their fast-food employer for dipping themselves into the sink used to clean dishes.

One of the girls bathing in the sink at the Anderson Kentucky Fried Chicken posted the photos on the Internet and after management learned of them, all three were suspended today, said Cheri, assistant manager at the restaurant. She declined to give her last name.

“The girls are being reprimanded for it,” Cheri said.

She said she learned of the photos, which had been posted publicly on the girl’s MySpace.com social Web site, during the dinner rush today.

The photos, which appeared to have been posted late last month, showed the girls bathing in the deep commercial sink and posing in their underwear and swimwear.

“I was in shock when I saw it,” Cheri said.

Granted, I’ve never worked in a fast food place, but I can’t see how one would see a part of the kitchen and go to friends, “Ladies, we totally need to get naked in this and take photos.” No matter how finger licking the chicken at KFC may be, I don’t think I’d so desperately want to be a part of the action. Personnel at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, report extracting 52 foreign objects that 10 teenage girls deliberately embedded in their arms, hands, feet, ankles and necks over the last three years, including needles, staples, wood, stone, glass, pencil lead and a crayon.

One patient had inserted 11 objects, including an unfolded metal paper clip more than 6 inches long.

The study, presented Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago, is the first to report on this type of self-inflicted injury among teenagers, the researchers said. They call the behavior “self-embedding disorder.”

Dr. Elizabeth Berger, a spokeswoman for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, said parents should know that most teens do not injure themselves. But some teens might be at risk, and professionals who work with young people should be made aware of the study, she said.

“The take-home message would be that children who have it tough, carry psychological wounds and disability as the result,” Berger said. “Tortured people internalize the torture.”
