18 of the best recurring SNL characters of all-time

In its 36 seasons, Saturday Night Live has seen a ton of recurring characters. While many of these characters are wholly forgettable, there are plenty others that manage to make us laugh no matter how many times we see them. While choosing the all-time best SNL characters is exceptionally difficult (and very subjective), we think the following 18 candidates are a pretty good representation of the show.

18 The Church Lady (Dana Carvey)
Could it be…Satan!?!? Dana Carvey was a master of character acting, and his uber religious Church Lady was certainly one of his funnier personas.

17 Debbie Downer (Rachel Dratch)
Even though Debbie Downer was nothing more than a one-note character, that doesn’t stop her from being consistently hilarious. Rachel Dratch’s facial expressions and deadpan delivery really helped this sketch stay fresh. Of course, waiting to see how long it was going to take Jimmy Fallon to crack was also part of the fun.

16 Harry Caray (Will Ferrell)
“Hey Norm! If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?” Obviously, Will Ferrell has plenty of memorable characters that could have made this list. However, it’s Ferrell’s whacky, over-the-top take on Cubs announcer Harry Caray that earns his accolades from us.

15 Junice Merill (Kristen Wiig)
You may not remember the name, but you surely remember the baby arms. Kristen Wiig takes a classic Lawrence Welk Show and turns it into something incredibly different with her portrayal as the black sheep of the singing Merill sisters.

14 New York Governor David Paterson (Fred Armisen)
Poking fun at a blind man can be difficult territory. Not so for Armisen, who deftly plays the outspoken and cross-eyed New York governor. Whether he’s spouting hate-speech about New Jersey or walking in front of the camera after his segment is over, this is one of the best SNL characters of the past few years.

13 Spartan Spirit Cheerleaders (Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri)
Will Ferrell makes the list again along with co-star Cheri Oteri thanks to the overly peppy B-string Spartan Spirit Cheerleaders (a.k.a. Craig and Ariana). While their banter is always hilarious, it’s their hilariously stupid cheers that keep us coming back for more.

12 Beldar Conehead (Dan Aykroyd)
In the early years of SNL, the Coneheads sketches emerged as one of the longest running and most well received among viewers. At the head of the alien family (or are they from Remulak – a small town in France?), was Dan Akyroyd.

11 Bill Clinton (Darrell Hammond)
Darrell Hammond is an unsung hero of Saturday Night Live. He may have never gone on to major movie fame, but he clearly is one of the most skilled character actors to ever grace the SNL screen. One of his most beloved impressions is that of the fun-loving Bill Clinton.

10 The Continental (Christopher Walken)
The world rejoices when Christopher Walken stops by to host SNL. During his many, many appearances, The Continental inevitably returns to give the world a glimpse at how a self-proclaimed lady’s man fumbles through a date to inevitably spend the night alone.

9 Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer (Phil Hartman)
Starring one of the most beloved SNL cast members of all time and written by one of the best SNL writers of all time (Jack Handey), Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer is just the right amount of ridiculous.

8 Stefon (Bill Hader)
Bill Hader has emerged as one of the better character actors among the current cast members of Saturday Night Live. Perhaps the best example of this is Weekend Update’s City Correspondent, Stefon.

7 Bill Swerkski’s Super Fans (Chris Farley, Mike Myers, etc.)
“Da Bears!” Perpetually sitting at a barroom table piled high with spare ribs, Polish sausage and beer, Bill Swerkski’s Super Fans were the epitome of Chicago stereotypes. Their topics of discussion inevitably focused on Chicago sports, and whether or not Mike Ditka could beat up a hurricane.

6 Astronaut Jones (Tracy Morgan)
Tracy Morgan’s tongue-in-cheek portrayal in this parody of low-budget sci-fi TV shows is one of his greatest hits while on SNL. From the catchy theme song to his womanizing one-liners, this is definitely an SNL classic.

5 The Samurai (John Belushi)
No Saturday Night Live list would be complete without the legendary John Belushi. Think back on Belushi’s SNL career, and his Samurai Delicatessen sketch is likely to be the first thing to come to mind. If the sketch is ahead of your time, then you owe it to yourself to watch it below.

4 Sean Connery – Jeopardy
Who would have ever thought one of the best TV rivalries would occur on a parody of Jeopardy? Sean Connery’s brutally defiant actions towards Will Ferrell’s Alex Trebek make this sketch a classic (as do Connery’s hilarious mispronunciations of answer categories).

3 Sarah Palin (Tina Fey)
“You betcha!” Tina Fey’s spot-on impersonation and uncanny resemblance to Sarah Palin helped make Saturday Night Live relevant again during the last presidential election. Thank goodness she decided to take on the role even after she decided to leave the show.

2 Matt Foley (Chris Farley)
Matt Foley is Chris Farley’s crowning achievement on Saturday Night Live. Given his innumerable great moments, that’s saying a lot. Though the character only appeared a few times, Farley’s explosive characterization and great physical comedy make him forever memorable.

1 Wayne and Garth (Mike Myers and Dana Carvey)
Wayne’s World is one of the few SNL sketches to successfully make the jump to the big screen. This fact is just a testament to how rich and rewarding the actual sketches proved to be. From their babe-alicious top ten lists all the way down to their ridiculous catchphrases (Schwing!), Wayne and Garth deserve a top spot on this list.

Ooh… those expensive burger joints make me SO ANGRY!! Thankfully, a young Seth Green (circa 1991) and his enthusiasm for overcharging has shown me just how terribly those “other” hamburger restaurants are treating their customers. From now on, I’m getting my burger fix at Snapp’s (FYI – Snapp’s is now Rally’s)!

3 Jack Black for Atari’s Pitfall
Little Jack Black looks about 200-lbs. lighter in this commercial for the early video game classic, Pitfall. While he may have put on a few pounds over the past couple decades, that unique enthusiasm he brings to the screen still holds true.

2 Demi Moore for Diet Coke
How far would you go to get your Diet Coke fix? Well, if you’re a young Demi Moore, you’d climb out onto a high-rise ledge to get yourself some of the sweet, sweet soda. Thankfully, despite the ridiculous shoulder pads and apparent plummet to her death, lucky Demi seems to find love in the end.

1 Lindsay Lohan for Jell-O
Here’s a sad reminder of innocence lost. Lindsay Lohan and her awesome hat team up with Bill Cosby to push Jell-O in this 1996 commercial. Though her appearance is nothing more than a cameo, I think it’s fair to say those little freckles of hers stole the show.

It seems like so far this season, Saturday Night Live has been about as buzzworthy as cholera. But Tina Fey hosted this weekend and, as usual, everything is better with that little lady in glasses. Here’s the clip of the night, Tina Fey revising her Sarah Palin impression for a venture called “The Sarah Palin Network.”

Who wouldn’t watch The Sarah Palin Network? Well, at least for five minutes and then never again. I’ve watched worse. I mean, yesterday, I watched a baseball game with the New York Mets. I think I’ve already found my bottom.

Since I know how many of you are big fans of that show she’s on, what’s it called again? Oh yeah, 30 Rock. I figured you might like to see how Tina Fey busted out the sexy for Esquire magazine this month. While I think Tina is an attractive woman, I think what really draws us to her is that she seems so attainable. She’s a MILF in the truest sense. Of course, the reality is that we have absolutely zero chance of getting a woman like her, but I’m not here to ruin your fantasies, I’m here to enhance them. It’s what I do. (By the way, be sure to check out Tina’s spot-on impression of Tracy Morgan. Yet, another reason we love her.)

Via AkimboComics (yay a first timer) comes this ballad about why people yearn for Tina Fey (note: I don’t…emo glasses are NEVER cute. EVER).

If I may readdress the point made above the comic, I don’t think Tina Fey is that f’ing cute like everyone makes her out to be. Yes it’s wonderful that she’s funny and whatever since women typically have the comedic chops of a frontal lobotomy, but that doesn’t qualify her as cute. It may be my superficiality shining through, but I’d much rather have a chick who’s, you know, legitimately hot rather than someone with a personality or fully functioning brain or vocal chords. I guess I’m just old-fashioned in that way.

Tina Fey is totally screwing over Sarah Palin

Polls are coming out showing that Tina Fey’s portrayal of Sarah Palin may make people view her as even more (or equally as much) of a dumbass as she is.

Comedienne Tina Fey has been blamed for the Republican party’s recent slip in the polls ahead of the U.S. presidential election, after impersonating vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on comedy sketch series Saturday Night Live.

According to a recent poll taken by the Washington Times, the “Tina Fey effect” has turned supporters off the Alaskan governor and her running-mate, presidential candidate John McCain.

Political scientist Jerald Podair tells the New York Post: “Presidential impersonators do influence elections, and in this one, Tina Fey is well on her way to ruining Sarah Palin’s political career. In a political culture that takes its cues from popular culture, a good impersonator may be worth a million votes.

“The parodies may have done a bit of damage. People remember Gerald Ford through the prism of Chevy Chase. Ford was among our most athletic presidents, and he had a wide-ranging knowledge of public-policy issues. But because of SNL, many came to think of him as a buffoon.”

But the reviews have yet to effect Palin’s own praise of Fey, with rumours still swirling the politician will make a cameo alongside the comedienne on the show.

Earlier this month, Palin told reporters she would be open to make an appearance, adding: “I love her, she’s a hoot (fun) and she’s so talented. It would be fun to meet her, imitate her and keep on giving her new material.”

I love that they had to clarify what Palin’s little silly white person speak meant for clarity’s sake. Just in case you got confused and thought “hoot” meant “C” in Alaska-speak.

Also, I’m not so sure that “giving her new material” is the best idea since the whole point of the impression is to basically present Sarah Palin as an underqualified dumbass. I’m really looking forward to her Tina Fey impression. “I wear glasses and look at me, golly gosh I have TV shows there, gee whiz I sure say a lot of funny things!” Should be a real scream.

Sarah Palin will get revenge on your precious Tina Fey

Tina Fey has been absolutely nailing Sarah Palin (not to be confused with the porn film “Nailin’ Paylin”) week after week on SNL. So what’s Sarah Palin’s response? Taking her on in a battle of comedic wits.

It’s looking more and more likely that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will appear on ”Saturday Night Live” — to have some fun with Tina Fey.

As the comedian’s impressions of the GOP vice presidential candidate draw laughs from Republicans and Democrats alike, a top honcho from the John McCain campaign tells me there’s a debate going on about how to respond.

Some key McCain staffers are content with Palin joking about the “SNL” routines on the campaign trail — as when she scribbled “I’m not Tina Fey” on a supporter’s cell phone and said she’d dressed as Fey on Halloween. But others — including the governor herself — think a return punch on the NBC airwaves is what’s needed.

I’m hearing some sort of Palin tweak of Fey’s American Express commercials is in the works.

I think this will be another home run for Sarah Palin. Because, when seeing her, if there’s one thing you can tell, it’s that she has a great, edgy, biting sense of humor. She’ll probably really come out swinging with some fierce jokes like “Oh, I’m Tina Fey, I look like Sarah Palin!” or perhaps “I’m Tina Fey, I read stuff, look at me and all my words!” That’ll show her for accurately portraying Sarah Palin for the bumpkin that she is.

You know who wouldn’t be all cutesy trying to one-up a satire? William Taft. He’d just lay there, bedridden, unable to lift his massive hindquarters. Then he’d request another fresh pig. That’s just how Taft rolls, baby. Get out of his way. Seriously. Get out of his way, he’ll roll like the boulder in Indiana Jones.
