The Rob Lowe tweet heard round the world yesterday now appears to be some kind of inside joke between him and Colts owner Jim Irsay. The two have been good friends for quite some time and a brief Google search reveals several pictures of them together. It stands to reason that Lowe received the information from Irsay and perhaps even consulted him before sending out the Tweet.

So, the question becomes, why? Why did the two troll us on one of the largest social media websites in the world? The answer seems simple, albeit somewhat sinister. This Saturday at 8pm, the Lifetime original movie, Untouchable, will air for the first time. What better way for a little bump in the ratings than to make yourself the most popular person on Twitter for a day?

Almost 24 hours later and Lowe is still trending on every major search engine. Combine that with his boost in followers (started the day at 229k and now sits at 244k) and yea, you get the picture.

We’ve been had.

There are numerous types of gamers, but when you get down to it, they can boiled down to either one of two types: casual and hardcore gamers. For years, designers have tried making both audiences happy, but at long last, someone’s finally discovered the winning formula.

Get ready for the Cascore revolution, which seeks to bring both groups together, and have them play as one. And who’s the genius behind this movement? Why Peter Molydeux! Not Peter Molyneux, the man responsible for Fable and other Lionhead titles, aka gaming’s equivalent to PT Barnum…

Peter Molydeux is actually a parody Twitter account, which pokes fun at the real deal’s hyperbole. He’s quite the hit amongst gaming industry types, but I’m pretty sure anyone can enjoy the fake game designer’s fake game ideas. Here’s another, in which you actually assume the role of Peter Molyneux himself, aka God’s gift to video games. And who will make you believe that a tree can help you fly into outer space…

BTW, some have noticed that the Cascore title has more than a passing resemblance to Suda 51′s Diabolical Pitch, which also combines casual gameplay… in this case, throwing an imaginary baseball, a la Wii Sports… and killing zombies. Though Peter Molydeux has a reason for that…

Well, the idea of smell-o-vision never managed to excite the imaginations of television or moviegoers, but how about when playing games or surfing the internet?

That’s what the Olly is all about. According to Rocker, Paper, Shotgun, it connects to your PC via USB and omits odors based upon what’s happening on screen.

Thus far, no game makers have signed up to support the platform. Among the many reasons, it’s primarily aimed at hardcore Twitter users, not gamers. The basic idea being, instead of paying attention to your tweet feed, some fragrance is discharged associated to a particular person whenever he or she tweets.

One can only imagine what smells is given out to some hottie that your Twitter-stalking. Or someone like, say, Snoop Dog?

Actually, it’s all up to the user, because Olly is completely customizable. Which also means it can be used to interface with games, which is where the real potential of the device lies. Given how many games are basically interactive movies, the sense of smell might be a logical accompaniment to the sense of movement.

Hopefully someone will create a version to interface with consoles as well, since I’ve always wanted to know what the Mushroom Kingdom smells like. And Princess Peach. Though more seriously, there are a ton more cooking games on the console side than on PCs.

Though how one gets smells into the box is a mystery all by itself. To either get one, or build one yourself… again, this is mostly due to DIY types, hence why Twitter-integration will be fun for like 30 seconds among those that actually get their feet wet with such a device… simply head on over to here.

With a Trifoce tattoo near her vag (or so it was implied) that we’ll unfortunately never get to see. Nintendo is, after-all and unfortunately, a kid friendly company.

For those who missed Popeye and Sweet Pea (but all grown up)’s first stab at being Nintendo sales folk, from earlier this summer, here’s your refresher. This time around it’s for the just released Four Swords: Anniversary Edition…

… As for what Zelda IRL would have done if she had lost the bet…

… Joking clearly runs in the family it would seem. But a man can dream, can’t he?

BTW, the aforementioned game is pretty awesome! And well worth the download, especially since it’s totally free (provided you have a DS that’s capable of nabbing DSiWare software). At least until early next year, when Link’s birthday celebration officially comes to a close and the game officially goes on sale. Unfortunately it’s far more fun when playing with pals.

There’s a single player component, which is fine and all, but pales in comparison to the main course (which lacks all the cool nods to past Legend of Zeldas, for example). And too bad setting up a multiplayer session on any kind of Nintendo hardware is a real pain in the ass (though I’m not 100% if they made things easier on the 3DS).

Google+ Community Guidelines are a little more stringent than you might imagine, and you need to make sure you know what they are and that you don't break them. Doing so could cost you your life. (I mean, not like literally, but kind of.)

Google+ is the hottest social-network service on the planet right now; it’s nearly impossible to hit up the club and not get asked constantly for an invite, you know?

So it seems like a good time to remind you that, even though this is the Internet we’re talking about, and even though it’s still the closest thing computers have to the “wild west,” you still need to make sure you’re not a total rebel.

Because, as a 10-year-old Netherlands kid learned over the past week when he signed up for Google+ despite not being old enough (13 is the minimum age), if you don’t abide by Google’s Terms of Service AND Google+’s Community Guidelines, you could end up in some really annoying trouble.

Why? Because Google+ is — duh – attached to your Google Account.

That means Google+ is attached to your Gmail account, your Google Reader account, your YouTube account, your Google Docs account, your Google Calendar account, your — well, you get the point.

If you use Google a lot (and you probably do, like the rest of the world), then you need to remember that if you do something that violates those rules, you’ll lose your entire account.

What violates those rules? Well, nudity/sexually explicit content does, of course, and so does hate speech. But if you violate something relating to a copyright law (I dunno, post an NFL video that’s not from the NFL?) you could get booted.

If you engage or promote dangerous or illegal activities — and, by the by, there’s absolutely no clarification about that, so don’t start talking about wrestling alligators! — you could get kicked off.

You can’t impersonate anyone, sigh.

And you can’t have a racy profile pic; Google says, “For example, do not use a photo that is a close-up of a person’s buttocks or a woman’s cleavage.” (Yes, it would be interesting to see what they would do if you made Ween’s “Chocolate and Cheese” album cover your profile pic.)

The point is this, though: we’re dealing with something far more powerful than Twitter or Facebook now, because those were simply one-stop locations for your social networking. Creating a new profile at Facebook or Twitter is a ball-breaker, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Losing every email contact and every calendared event and every important document you’ve ever created online? Whole different ballgame, people.

Yesterday, as much of the country was celebrating America’s birthday by getting fatter, drunker and more explosive, Fox News issued a scary tweet indicating that Barack Obama was dead.

It turns out that the “report” wasn’t anything more than a false alarm — the “news” station’s Twitter account was hacked, and the report was false.

The problem is, it sat up on the site for nine hours.

In that time, the hackers (a group named “Script Kiddies”) fired out six or so tweets from Fox’s account, and the news network was unable — at least for a few hours — to regain control of the account. As such, folks continually retweeted, @ replied and discussed their embarrassing takeover.

“Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting,” a spokesperson for Script Kiddies said, per Think Magazine, a website who’s editors spoke with the hackers on Tuesday.

Fortunately, Fox has done what every grown up news organization does: cry to the Secret Service and Twitter.

“We are investigating and will be conducting the appropriate follow-up,” said Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie.

The Script Kiddies’ account on Twitter has been suspended, and the social network plans on investigating how they were able to hack into Fox’s account.

Besides the obvious fact that their password is simply “Palin12.”

Want to see what kind of volume Twitter gets just before and after a natural disaster? Now you can.

You’ll recall that the Japanese Earthquake was one of the most terrifying natural disasters we’ve ever seen.

You’ll also recall that it was the first major, major natural disaster that took place with a national social media network in place.

And in the world of social media, when the proverbial ish starts to hit the fan, things pick up. (Things also pick up when fun stuff happens like, as the Twitter blog notes, during the World Cup and whatnot.)

Which is why it’s always interesting to see this sort of online blow-up in the form of video and shiny colors and stuff.

Said video is going to show the number of @replies “traveling into and out of Japan in a one-hour period just before and then after the earthquake.”

Messages TO Japan are in pink; messages FROM Japan are in yellow.

Anthony Weiner admitted on Monday that he did indeed post pictures of his wiener on Twitter. Which should put an end to these ridiculous headlines really soon!

For the past few days, America’s been obsessed with Anthony Weiner’s wiener.

After all, the Congressman was being accused of sending no-longer alleged photos via his Twitter account that showed a man’s bulging underwear.

Naturally, Weiner claimed that his Twitter account was hacked and fully denied sending the photos … until Monday night, when he finally caved and admitted the obvious, that he’d sent the photos.

“This was me doing a dumb thing and doing it repeatedly and lying about it,” the poorly-named-for-a-penis-on-Twitter scandal Congressman said Monday night.

Weiner said that he engaged in ”several inappropriate conversations with women I have met online,” and that he’d done weird stuff online with ”about six women over the past three years.”

However, for all his weird wiener-ness online, Weiner claims that he he never had

“I have never met any of these women,” Weiner said. “I’ve never had sex outside of my marriage.”

That’s good news, I suppose, and Weiner also claims that he and his wife has no intention of splitting up and that he has no intention of re-signing.

Which is also good news … if he likes being treated like the Congressional version of Tiger Woods.

Fortunately, it appears Weiner has learned a lesson, even if that lesson is a simple one: DO NOT POST PICTURES OF YOUR PENIS ON TWITTER.

It’s hard to believe it, but up until now, you’ve always had to click through to someone’s Twitter page in order to follow them from a website.

Don’t believe me, try it over on the right with the @Guyism account.

See? Unlike with Facebook, where you could “Like” anything from any page on any site any where in the world, Twitter required a clickthrough.

Obviously, this resulted in fewer followers for people, because, as we all know, the ultimate rule about people is that extra steps = less steps. Since people are lazy.

So it’s good news that Twitter is now allowing people to put a “Follow Button” on their own website.

Via Twitter’s own site, you can see in the picture that it’s an easily customizable button — black OR white! — that simply requires plugging your name in.

Really, there’s not much to it, which begs two questions. 1) Will you be making this better, Twitter? And, 2) What the hell took so long?

Oh, wait, I have a third question, Tweetsters: WHY ARE YOU SENDING ME EMAILS FOR “AT REPLIES?????”

Because if you haven’t checked your email in the past 24 hours, you’re probably getting them too.

Basically, Twitter enabled more email notifications so that if someone mentions you, you get pelted with an email to whatever account you’ve got registered.

This would be cool if it wasn’t super annoying, and I’m sure that Ashton Kutcher — he of several million followers who likely always randomly shout him out — really appreciates something like this.

Whatever, you can go turn it off in your settings, but it’s an annoying move that Twitter shouldn’t just turn on without checking about first. The smart thing to do is have an “opt-out system” where you alert everyone on the site that such emails are happening and you can click here if you don’t want them.

Anyone who doesn’t opt-out gets the emails.

But that would make too much sense. Much like having a Follow button two years ago.

Spin Magazine is really upset that they didn't get @Spin on Twitter first. Which would have been smart like 10 years ago. So they're calling the lawyers!

So, Spin has always been the greatest magazine of my youth. I grew up plastering Spin — and Rolling Stone, natch — covers all over my bedroom as a kid.

Even if they became a little more douchey as they got older, whatever, that’s what happens when people make money and get famous and stuff. (I’ve bought one issue in the past 10 years — this one.)

But the news that they’re trying to use aggressive legal tactics to wrestle away the @spin Twitter handle from Eric Rice, who’s been tweeting forever, well, that news is just incredibly lame and embarrassing.

Rice has been tweeting for the past couple of days about getting a “cease and desist” from the lawyers for Spin, and eventually posted the letter online.

The gist of this classic “We’re the man now and we’ dont’ care that we used to be about hatin’ on the man we’re hatin’ on you, man” letter? That there’s some CONFUSION about who’s who in the Twitterverse.

“It has recently come to our client’s attention that you have been using the term “SPIN” to identify your Twitter account and as a result it has caused a significant amount of confusion among our client’s customers,” the lawyers for Spin wrote.

The lawyers then go on to cite people who tweeted stuff like “@spin magazine” and demand that Rice quit using his Twitter handle.

Is this the worst thing ever? Well, maybe.

I mean, if Spin is so hip and stuff, how did they get beat by this dude on Twitter? And if they have such a hard-on for legal stuff, what’s taken so long to get this letter out?

And do they realize that if you Google “Spin Twitter,” that they’re the first thing that pops up in search?

And have they decided to sue anyone who dances and or plays basketball for attempting to conduct a spin move? Because that would be about as awesome as what they’re doing to Rice.

18-year-old starlet and recovering drug/eating disorder/Pixie Stick dust addict Demi Lovato entered rehab last November to battle her various demons. Now, staking a comeback, she’s tweeting pics of herself in a bikini to show how healthy and awesome she is. The logic is sound enough for me.

Lovato tweeted the photo above, saying:

I’ve been working so hard to get healthy and fit.. I can’t believe I’m about to do this but I’m so excited.. Here’s my bikini time body!

I never thought I’d ever feel confident enough to ever to that. I’m excited how far I’ve come since being completely ashamed of my body..

I want any girl/guy out there who struggles with body image or confidence to know that it IS possible to find peace with yourself.

It hasn’t been easy, but it starts with a commitment to yourself.. Your mind.. And your soul. And trust me, I’m still working at it!! Haha

Some critics are calling the Lovato Twitter bikini pics a misstep and questioning how this helps her process of becoming comfortable with who she is.

Personally, I say good for her. I mean yes, the pig in me says that more 18-year-old girls should fight for happiness with their bodies by tweeting amateur iPhone pics of themselves in a bikini for millions to see. But the girl, misguided or not, is seizing the opportunity to broadcast her own message rather than have the “EXCLUSIVE FIRST HOT BIKINI PHOTOS OF DEMI LOVATO OUT OF REHAB” headline coming from some shady photo agency. And it’s a hot 18-year-old Disney starlet tweeting bikini photos of herself. So clearly there’s something here for everyone.

Any other 18-year-old girls in crisis can feel free to send their bikini photos to our tips email at the right. We’ll have counselors available 24/7 to help you through your problems by sending back emails such as, “You look good, baby. Just drop the shoulder strap” and “OMFG ghhghfrjekek”. The latter is an indigenous way of saying, “You are beautiful both inside and out,” so please interpret it as such. Thank you.

Twitpic caused a firestorm on Wednesday when there was an announcement that they signed a deal to sell celebrity photos and then changed their terms of service multiple times. What's it mean for you?

Twitpic is the biggest name out there when it comes to Twitter photos — many a funny post on the Internet has had a “Twitpic.com” photo credit on it. And the company apparently got sick of that happening, and decided to ink a deal to license out celebrity photos to “news agency WENN.”

“There has been much unauthorised use of Twitpic images which we shall be addressing without delay,” WENN chief executive Lloyd Beiny said. ”The belief by some that any photo posted on Twitter is available at no cost is completely wrong but now as result of this new arrangement, anyone wishing to publish celebrity photos posted on Twitter via TwitPic will be able to do so legitimately via WENN.”

Now, Twitpic never announced that licensing deal (but WENN already has a deal with Plixi, and Beiny, who has the most British name ever, surely wouldn’t issue a press release if it wasn’t true, right?), but they did announce a change to their Terms of Service (TOS) today … twice!

Per Business Insider, the first change basically stated that Twitpic could do as it liked with your photos as long as you didn’t delete them, and even if you did delete them, they could hold onto said photos for a “commercially reasonable” amount of time.

Naturally, this went over like a naked Kristie Allie picture on their homepage, so Twitpic circled back through, apologized and made a new change.

“First off I want to apologize for that confusion and our lack of clarity,” founder Noah Everett said. “We’ve updated our terms again to be more clear and to also show that you still own your content.”

Here are the new, more clear TOS:

You retain all ownership rights to Content uploaded to Twitpic. However, by submitting Content to Twitpic, you hereby grant Twitpic a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and Twitpic’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business…

So, Twitpic can still reproduce, etc, etc, your images. This isn’t shocking, though, because anyone on the Internet — Facebook, Myspace, whoever — that allows you to upload photos is pretty much required to have such language in their Terms of Service.

Otherwise, you could basically upload a photo and then sue them for reproducing your photo. Or, if it was viewed 1,000,000 times, sue them for royalties based on advertising.

Still, something is afoot with Twitpic, because, well, smoke/fire/etc. My suggestion? Delete your Twitpic app, switch over YFrog or some other photo service that isn’t trying to make money off of “celebrities” and wait for them to announce that such a deal is NOT in the works before ever coming back.

Twitter just purchased Tweetdeck ... but is that actually a good thing?

Tweetdeck is universally regarded as the best Twitter client. Unfortunately, Twitter just bought Tweetdeck for $40-50 million.

At least that’s the according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch, who reports that it includes “both cash and Twitter stock.”

Now, you might be asking, “Why is this unfortunate?” Well, it’s only unfortunate if Twitter changes anything.

And it’s likely they will. But for the moment, Tweetdeck is fantastic because it allows users to run multiple accounts in the background, get alerted when they’re mentioned, set their own speed and time for seeing updates, sort who they’re following more neatly, and a slew of other things that are absolutely must-have if you use Twitter, in my opinion.

Twitter’s going to likely want to do a couple things. 1) Make money off Tweetdeck and 2) continue trying to get people to use Twitter products.

The good news, then, is that they own Tweetdeck. There are some issues with non-Twitter-owned products and their API access that becomes problematic some times, and so if Tweetdeck’s under the Twitter umbrella, things are a lot “safer” for users of the software.

But Twitter might have actually purchased the software in order to keep UberMedia, who Twitter hates, from getting Tweetdeck and then having everyone leave Twitter’s native apps (except for “Twitter for iPhone” which is actually good, although Twitter didn’t make it, sigh).

And that scares me — if Twitter’s just buying Tweetdeck to be on the defensive, do they really have the user experience in mind? Because it sounds more like they’ve got their own safety and greed in mind. That’s cool; we live in a capitalistic world. But I don’t want no one messing with my Tweetdeck.

The other issue — money — might be more problematic. There have been concerns that Twitter can’t justify its valuation because they can’t figure out any way to make money off of the product. Sure, billions (I think it’s billions; worst case it’s hundreds of millions or something) of people use Twitter. It’s a great, fun product for many different reasons.

And lots of people use Tweetdeck and prefer it as their client. But if Twitter is hell-bent on making that $50 million back, then there’s a good chance that Tweetdeck could become cluttered with ads. Imagine if you fired up Tweetdeck and there was a column that was entirely dedicated to “promoted trends,” like the new version of Twitter for iPhone has at the top.

Or if some interstitial ad popped up every ten minutes reminding you to use J.G. Wentworth – I want those advertisers to die a slow death, in case you didn’t know – to GET CAAAAASH NOW!

That’d be brutal. Sure it might result in some accidental clicks and make Twitter some money, but it would hog user’s computer memory, and it would cheapen the user’s ability to enjoy the experience.

Which is why if you’re a fan of Tweetdeck, you probably shouldn’t be celebrating Twitter’s decision to drop invest just quite yet.

All thanks to keeping an eye out on Twitter.

Even more amazing: Sohaib Athar (@ReallyVirtual), a tech guy living in Abbottabad, Pakistan, incidentally live-tweeted the attack on the Bin Laden compound.

Click to embiggen the photo, or cruise over to his Twitter site to see some of the various things he’s saying. My favorite?

Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event).

The reason this is my favorite is because a) it’s the first tweet and b) I think about what I would be tweeting if I were this guy. Because it would probably be stuff like “OMFG. A helicopter at 1AM? Really Pakistan government? You don’t know I have to work in three hours?” Or something stupid like that.

Anyway, Athar continues tweeting:

A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad Cantt. I hope its not the start of something nasty :-S

Little did he know, right??? Athar quickly realized the helicopter in question was not from Pakistan and that led to his potential discovery that

Since taliban (probably) don’t have helicpoters, and since they’re saying it was not “ours”, so must be a complicated situation #abbottabad

He’s got a litany of tweets like this, where he’s describing a crash (a drone?) and a second helicopter and lots of noise and shooting and stuff. Then, late in the evening, someone found his tweets. And …

Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it.

Which was quickly followed by:

and here come the mails from the mainstream media… *sigh*

The long and short is that Sohaib Athar is going to end up getting famous for about 15 minutes simply because he decided to move to Pakistan to “get away” (whoops) and tweeted a bunch of times when a helicopter flew over him.

Which is kind of amazing when you think about it.

It’s pretty easy to stereotype people you know based on their Twitter accounts. (Or maybe even people you think you know, but who aren’t your real friends. What? You don’t have those too? Sigh.)

But could you guess, based on what they’ve said in the past, what their next Tweet would be? Perhaps you don’t have to with the new greatest site in the world until tomorrow, That Can Be My Next Tweet!

Insofar as I can tell, what the site does is let you enter in a Twitter name, hit a button and then it mashes up things you say a lot. Like, for instance, above: the site has stereotyped the next @Guyism tweet by mashing up a bunch of stuff the corporate account says. Like, “So play it so get with their first crack at best drunk voicemail EVER for over $600 in the girls’!”

Isn’t that the most Guyism tweet ever? I think it may be.

And the best part is, the site doesn’t require any login or verification or any of that crap. And so far as I can tell, it’s not spam or anything.

Although if everyone starts using it, it could become annoying pretty quickly as Twitter would fill up with even more crap than normal.

It’s a great means of communication or it’s an annoying way to tell the world what you had for breakfast.

But put your opinions aside for a few minutes and enjoy what Kevin Zelko’s doing at Mariners’ baseball games: taking beer orders via Twitter.

A beer vendor for the M’s, Zelko’s doing yeoman’s work to revolutionize the sale of suds at Safeco with his Twitter account @MsBeerVendor.

“Since the beginning of beer vendors, we’ve been walking up and down the aisles seeing who wants a beer, I’m going to try to change that,” Zelko said in an interview he did with CNBC’s Darren Rovell.

The numbers, in terms of sales are pretty good: 80 beers ($125 in tips) on a normal weekday game and 100 beers (~$200 in tips) on weekends.

Folks are embracing it, as fans have actually tweeted things like “Can’t wait to head to the park on Friday and order with @MsBeerVendor!” (That’s actually fake, but you get the point.)

“I come from a family of stockbrokers,” said Zelko, who’s a teacher for special-needs children during the day. “Selling things is easy for us.”

Fortunately for him, beer’s an easy sell at baseball game. In fact, there’s really no reason why more ballparks shouldn’t hop on board with Zelko’s idea. (Or whether some enterprising person should patent an iPhone app that lets you order beer at a certain park …)

Really, the only problem is the fact that wireless service, regardless of the provider, always seems to fail whenever you get in a crowd of more than 10,000 people.

That’s where “Last Night Never Happened,” a new app from Daniel Cowen and 22 seeds, comes in. LNNH links up with Twitter and Facebook and let’s you take a quick snapshot of what you’ve done on social media for the last few hours … and then make it disappear.

Say, for instance, that you started boozing on the golf course at 9:00 AM, head to a restaurant for lunch, forget to order food (and go with Jagerbombs instead) and then — poof! — the rest of the evening goes away.

At some point during that blackout shesh, there’s a strong-to-quite-strong chance that you’ll have taken a picture with your phone, tweeted something really stupid and/or possibly racist, or written that you love a fat chick on your Facebook wall.

(Clearly, these are just random examples. It can get much/less worse depending on how horrible a person you are and/or how much Rumplemints you end up consuming.)

Well, instead of scrambling to your computer to try and delete all your Facebook posts, you can instead fire up “Last Night Never Happened,” set the Delorian-like clock back to noon the day before, check how many stupid things you tossed up on your social media accounts, and wipe the proverbial slates clean.

There’s always the downside that someone you know has screenshotted what you wrote, in which case this won’t actually do you any good, but if that’s the case, just pretend you’re a professional athlete and tell everyone your Twitter account was hacked.

Recently an internal video from Microsoft’s WGX (Windows Gaming eXperience) team was leaked to the public, which shows their take on how gamers will interact with Microsoft’s various platforms (PC, Xbox, Windows Phone 7) and gaming as a whole. Well, sad to say, it’s another clearly clueless scheme courtesy of Microsoft’s brilliant marketing department.

First off, and this isn’t an assumption that is entirely unique to most companies, is how they assume everyone wants the whole world to know their business. Granted, it’s tough to find someone without a Facebook page and Twitter account these days, but not everyone is a “power user” of said social networks either. Plus those who are, have pals that avoid them like the plague.

Though the biggest issue with Microsoft’s vision is how it’s entirely built around those annoying avatars that were born on the Xbox 360. I forget how long they’ve been around, but they still feel like lame ass rip-off’s of Nintendo’s Miis. Attempts were made recently to revamp them, but you’re still screwed if you’re a bit chubby or balding in real life, because those traits do not translate well onto your virtual puppets one bit. Not to say it’s that much better on Nintendo’s platforms, but given how cartoonier things are on that end, one doesn’t feel quite so uncomfortable. Plus, you have far more freedom when it comes to customization, whereas on MS’s platforms, their idea is basically to buy stupid accessories (more on that in a bit).

So the video, which again is a checklist for every woefully clueless marketing type under the sun, portrays a utopia in which a person is merrily playing Farmville (lol), and then immediately jumps into some kind of interactive experience alongside other avatars (in this case a virtual edition of American Idol). Which is kinda funny because I remember the last attempt at something similar, the Xbox 360 version of 1 vs 100, being a colossal bomb due to lack of interest.

Next we see someone checking out their Facebook profile via their avatar (actually, I am one of those aforementioned diehard Facebook users, as well as a hardcore 360 player, along with many in my circle, and not once have any of us used FB in XBL), and then updating her look by spending actual money on nonexistent clothingl. I’m fairly confident that no one on my friends list dares sport such virtual apparel because it’s a clear sign for others that screams “hey, look at me, I’m an idiot who throws away cash.”

And so the video goes on, with the key point being that everything’s interconnected, and how to truly be part of the action, you’ll be nickeled and dimmed to death. Now, this is hardly a scientific sampling of the general public’s reaction and all, but response the to YouTube video thus far could be described as ‘vehement disgust and disdain.’ As one random person on the internet said it best: “Battlefield 2 being referenced in this makes me sad.” I feel your pain, my friend.

To be honest, much of the fundamental ideas in the video is fairly sound; more and more of our various platforms that serve different purposes are being interlocked in various ways. But this is Microsoft we’re talking about, who just buried their iPod killer, the Zune, last week. Nuff said.

Up until recently, Sinker had been operating in anonymity, but after Emanuel said last week he’d be interested in meeting the guy who ran the account, Sinker came forward and now the two are buddies. Well, they met. And Emanuel probably yelled lots of swear words Sinker’s way.

Regardless, it landed the guy an appearance on “The Colbert Report.”
