Yesterday’s afternoon games were arguably the greatest stretch of basketball the tournament has ever seen. In a matter of two hours, there were four buzzer beaters. So the night games had a lot to live up to–and frankly, almost all the games were disappointing. That is, except the last 5 minutes of the MSU-UCLA matchup. Trailing by as much as 23 points, the Spartans mounted a furious comeback and came within one possession of winning the game. But alas, UCLA just barely held on when Kalin Lucas was called for a travel on the final possession.

Stepping away from the tournament for a moment, let’s look at what else is going on in the world of sports. Jim Tressel has given himself a 5-game suspension to match that of his players starting next season. But the final decision still resides with the NCAA, and there is a chance Tressel could be gone for as much as 1-year if they decide to drop the hammer. If that’s the case, it will be interesting to see if OSU decides to just move on from this debacle or stay the course with Tressel.

In fact, I think anyone watching this video of a white blonde girl from UCLA going off on Asians who use their cell phones in the library would probably go, “You need to dial that back.” Even the manufacturers of these would be like, “Um, kind of overstepping a bit there, darling.”

As you know if you follow me on Twitter, I’m a USC alum. So any opportunity I have to publicly teabag UCLA, I’m all on board with. But it’s not in my nature to side against decent looking white blonde girls (I’m socially progressive like that), so you could imagine how difficult this is for me.

However, you really can’t watch this video and not feel uncomfortable. “Ahhhhh ching chong ling long ting tong” followed by half-hearted tsunami jokes? If you want to go after Asian people hard, fine. They, like every group of people in society, suck in a wide variety of ways. But this whole entitled white chick thing of, “Well, I mean no disrespect but here’s a bunch of wildly disrespectful things. Anywho, I’d say this about anybody, you guys!” doesn’t really make it right. Especially at UCLA. I’ve been to UCLA. There are definitely more Asian people than there are spoiled white girls (come to good ol’ SC for the latter, kids!) so I wouldn’t be shocked to find this girl diced up and in a take-home of moo goo gai pan sometime soon.

I’d still hit it though. And make her do the silly Asian voice during it. Sex isn’t good unless it shames your partner and degrades an entire sector of society, I say.

UPDATE: A UCLA spokesperson responded to the video to school paper The Daily Bruin this morning, calling it “repugnant” and saying:

“The comments on there are contrary to the values the university believes in.”

The girl, now identified as former aspiring model Alexandra Wallace, is going to be up for university review.

The videos below don’t even begin to tell the story of the USC-UCLA tailgate fight that took place before the game yesterday. According to the the L.A. Times, two people were stabbed and one person, Arturo Cisneros, is being charged with attempted murder. Witnesses to the ordeal claim more than 50 people were involved in the all-out brawl. And although details are still rolling in, these clips below seem to indicate at least part, if not the beginning of the fight itself.

At :17 seconds, watch the wild haymaker that sparks the commotion. A man in a white shirt runs from about 15 feet away to deliver a punch from behind.

This second clip seems to be the aftermath of that punch and it’s downright disgusting. Video is definitely not for the faint of heart as one man takes about six consecutive shots to the head.

It appears that current Detroit Pistons owner Karen Davidson will have a deal to sell the team by November 1st according to NBA Commissioner David Stern. At the Board of Governors meeting in New York, Stern opened with the impending Pistons sale in his opening statement. “It’s not as fast a track as Golden State, but we’re looking for something definitive to happen in the month of November.”

The most impressive number from the Oregon blow-out of UCLA last night wasn’t the score (60-13 if you fell asleep), it’s the number of first downs the Ducks had–32. When you constantly pick up 1st downs on um, 1st down, well then that kind of stuff is going to happen. On the other hand, time of possession could be costly sometime down the road for the defense. Almost 2-1 in favor of the Bruins last night.

LeBron James’ run with the Cavs was “7 years of joy” according to his Twitter account. This comes after a report that James dissed the city of Cleveland and its fans by telling them to “get over it”. Speaking of which Mr. James, mind getting over, uh, yourself.

Roy Halladay didn’t look like himself last night but alas, even 75% of him is good enough to win a playoff road game. Halladay hurt his groin and often rode the bike in between innings to stay loose. His pitch count was abnormally high early and somehow he sneaked out of the 6th inning having thrown 108 total while scattering 6 hits. The teams head back to Philly for Game 6. It’ll be interesting to see if both the Yankees and Phillies can pull off miraculous 3-1 deficits in the same year.

How bad has it gotten for the Pittsburgh Pirates? Royals bench coach John Gibbons said thanks but no thanks to their job opening. The Pirates last manager, John Russell, was let go by the franchise on Oct. 4th and it appears there aren’t many contenders lining up for the position. And really, can you blame them. Russell’s stint with the Pirates resulted in a 186-299 record.

Since 1890, the Army-Navy football game has been an iconic rivalry game that provides bragging rights for the men in trenches or on boat decks around the world. It is one of the rare sporting events that transcend the arena in which it’s played. It is the essence of sport, and in 1963, it was played two weeks after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The events leading up to this iconic game — “to those immortal Saturdays of autumn 1963, when the Navy team left its mark on both the campus of the Naval Academy and the sport of college football itself” — are chronicled in the new book THE PRESIDENT’S TEAM: The 1963 Army-Navy Game & the Assassination of JFK, by Michael Connelly. The book is a masterpiece of both sports and historical non-fiction.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy—Navy hero, husband, father, and 35th President of the United States—was a Navy man through and through. Although he went to college at Harvard, he was extremely proud of his service and loyal to his friends still in the Navy. In turn, the Navy football squad—the 44 men from across the country who represented the U.S. Naval Academy on the gridiron—was his team. JFK kept a close eye on his beloved Midshipmen, and in 1963 — as Kennedy dealt with the Soviets, Cubans, social unrest in the South, and a coming presidential election — Navy was being hailed as a “Team of Destiny.” The president and the team would be eternally and inextricably linked together.

A GAME PLAN FOR LIFE: The Power of Mentoring, by John Wooden and Don Yaeger is Wooden’s tribute to those men and women whose lives, philosophies, and faith all shaped his own. Whether they be those who mentored him on a personal level—his father, his coaches and his wife, Nellie—or those who mentored him with greater ideals and achievements during difficult circumstances—Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa, Wooden culls life lessons from the words, teachings and actions of those who made an impact on him.

In his 27 years at UCLA, Wooden coached an elite roster of All-American and Hall-of-Fame basketball players and their accomplishments on the court are still the gold standard for team play in sports. The second half of of the book is for those who have had there their lives enhanced with John Wooden as their mentor. The two most prominent players of the Wooden era, Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Bill Walton, lend their voices and memories to the book, as does one of his lesser-know UCLA players—bench-warmer Andy Hill.

Other people whom Wooden mentored add their thoughts in chapters, including the extraordinary coaches Roy Williams and Dale Brown, Wooden’s great-granddaughter Cori Nicholson, and Bob Vigars, a Canadian special education teacher, basketball coach and Wooden admirer whom the coach has never met in person. The change in point-of-view expands the work to an all-encompassing study on the methods to becoming a wise mentor and the results of having one.
