The second day of “first round” action in the NCAA tourney didn’t turn out to be as exciting as the first. University of Texas-San Antonio led from start to finish over Alabama State in one of the most boring games I’ve ever seen. That is, until the VCU/USC game. The Roadrunners were led by Melvin Johnson III’s 29 points, a career high he reached in the first half alone.

At halftime of the VCU/USC game, the NCAA selection committee had to be thinking, “what the hell did we do”. With the score knotted at 22, both teams looked like they had no business in the tourney. But it was USC who proved that they really didn’t belong when they went ice cold down the stretch only making one basket in the last 9 minutes of the game. Not sure you can really call this one an upset, but I was certainly shocked at how bad the Trojans played considering some of their quality wins this season.

Who is the best golfer in the world? Well, if you ask Tiger Woods, it’s still him. Despite having not won in 2010 and struggling mightily thus far in 2011, Tiger believes that when push comes to shove, he has all the making of the world’s #1 player. “When I get my swing dialed in”, Tiger said. Yea, because when other guys have their swings dialed in, like uh, right now, they aren’t the best. Truly an insult to the rest of the PGA and golfers like Martin Kaymer who have been playing their ass off while Tiger recovers from his philandering.

As the 9th seeded Tennessee Volunteers prepare for Michigan tomorrow, the fate of their coach is in doubt. Rumors are circulating that whatever happens with Tennessee in the postseason, head coach Bruce Pearl will be shown the door. Pearl was found guilty of having recruits at his house for a BBQ–a no-no with the NCAA. He was suspended for the first 8 SEC games but the school wants to avoid further embarrassment. So yea, if you’re picking your brackets, UM has a very good shot of advancing with the Bruce Pearl sideshow going on.

I’m not a Pete Carroll fan myself, I think the dude is pretty shady and at best, a mediocre NFL coach. But LenDale, you’re a fat slob buddy, and if you had any ounce of talent left in those man boobs, you’d be playing.

After all, Carroll did resurrect the career of a fellow Trojan slob in Mike Williams. And if anybody knows man boobs, it’s him. Oh and former Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody–he’s got nice D cups.

At :17 seconds, watch the wild haymaker that sparks the commotion. A man in a white shirt runs from about 15 feet away to deliver a punch from behind.

This second clip seems to be the aftermath of that punch and it’s downright disgusting. Video is definitely not for the faint of heart as one man takes about six consecutive shots to the head.

Jay Cutler could handle eight sacks, but number nine finally did him in. The Bears’ quarterback suffered a concussion after he was repeatedly hit yesterday in the first half by the Giants defense. His status for week 5 is uncertain. His status for wanting to kill his offensive linemen and Mike Martz however remains extremely clear.

Josh Scobee kicked the 8th longest field goal in NFL history to defeat the Colts yesterday. It was the longest of his career and marks the 3rd time since 2007 that Scobee has beaten them with a last second field goal. Now if only the Jags could play like that against other teams.

Remember LaDainian Tomlinson? Just a few short years ago, he was arguably the best running back in the NFL and certainly one of the best in history. The Chargers wrote him off in the offseason citing old age and diminishing production. So he went to the Jets and the 31-year old pulled off his 47th 100 yard game against the Bills in Sunday’s game.

So which one is it Ms. Hong Su Jong? The North Korean gymnast has used three different birth dates for competition purposes ranging from 1985-1989. Age falsification has been a problem for gymnastics for quite some time. But never has something like this occurred. So on one hand I feel bad that people have been taking advantage of Jong for so long. On the other hand though, well, she sure does get her fair share of birthday cakes.

The last time both USC and Texas were unranked during the regular season, yea, it was a long time ago–516 weeks to be exact. The Trojans were stunned over the weekend by the visiting Huskies and Texas lost to bitter rival Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry making this the first since week 9 of the 2000 season that neither found themselves in the AP poll.

Texans’ running back Arian Foster finds himself in elite company today. After sitting out part of the game for disciplinary action, Foster came in to tally 187 yards from scrimmage in about 2.5 quarters. His offensive explosion thus far four games into the season has only been matched by two other players in history. Billy Sims and Emmitt Smith…both perennial pro-bowlers in their career.

Going into today’s Ryder Cup action, the U.S. finds themselves trailing the Europeans by three points. Considering the Americans were at one time leading this competition 6-4, it gives you an idea how the last session went. The Europeans stormed back to take command winning 5.5 out of a possible 6 points yesterday. But like all other Ryder Cups before, the singles matches will decide who takes home the trophy.

USC may have won on the battle on the field in Honolulu, but they lost the war in the stands. After what appears to be a confrontation between some fans, the cops make their way over to quell the situation.

But sometime during the “quelling”, the Hawaii Five-O did his best WWE impression and tossed the USC fan two rows down.

Don’t you dare come from the mainland sir and speak to an islander that way.

I would be remiss in not mentioning the extremely short dress his girlfriend was wearing and the apparent butt shot she gave the crowd. Yea, big deal, I rewound it a few times.

I’d also like to know why the person filming this felt the need to show the punt return in the middle of it, but I digress.

Unfortunately for former USC running back Reggie Bush, his days as the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner will be coming to an end.

Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Heisman Trophy Trust, the organization responsible for handing out College Football’s best player, will officially strip of Bush of the award before the end of the month.

Two sources close to the Heisman trust said the body’s investigation is coming to a close, and will ultimately concur with the NCAA’s determination that Bush was ineligible during his Heisman-winning season in 2005. Because of that independent conclusion, sources said the trust will relieve Bush of the award and leave the honor for that season vacant. The sources said Bush met with Heisman representatives last month at the New York law offices of Emmet, Marvin & Martin. The sources would not reveal details of that meeting.

Although information was available to the Heisman Trust from both the media and from USC itself, they conducted their own independent investigation into the matter.

It also does not appear that Vince Young, the 2005 Heisman runner-up, will receive the award. More or less, it seems that it will just be vacated. So all those time you thought you saw Reggie Bush juking defenders and streaking down the sidelines for touchdowns, uh yea, that never happened.

Despite USC’s atrocious defensive performance last night (588 yards), they did have one quality highlight. Here’s video of senior linebacker Michael Morgan absolutely trucking Hawaii’s quarterback.

No definitive word from the Hawaii athletic department on whether Bryant Moniz suffered a concussion on the play. Coach Greg McMackin said after the game, “I didn’t want to take any chances”.

Though USC was able to pull out a win against Hawaii yesterday 49-36, they gave up 588 yards of offense. The Trojans also looked rather undisciplined with 11 penalties. Lane Kiffin had this to say about his team’s performance. “It seems like we gave up 1,000 yards. I know we won and all that, but we can’t play like this.”

The entire situation is made worse for owner Frank McCourt because of his messy divorce with soon to be ex-wife Jamie. She claims that a 2004 agreement that makes Frank the sole owner is invalid. Why anyone would fight to be the owner of a team that far in debt is beyond understanding.

Total number of points Kai-Chen Chang won against top seed Caroline Wozniacki. That would be a nice statistic if it was a one set affair but Chang was “double-bageled” 6-0, 6-0. After the match Chang said, “I know it’s in front of a lot of people and on TV and stuff. But things happen”. Well, that’s sugarcoating it.

How serious do OSU fans take their football? On a Thursday night against a cupcake opponent in Marshall, 105,040 showed up to support their Buckeyes. That’s either a very dedicated group of alums or as famous UM announcer Bob Ufer put it…”Ohio Stadium is 10000 alumni and 74000 truck drivers”.

It’s been an interesting day for the USC Athletic Department. First they announced that Pat Haden would replace Mike Garrett as athletic director. A move that most saw coming.

But then they decided to unleash the fury on former USC standouts O.J Mayo and Reggie Bush. And in the latter’s case, they are sending his Heisman back.

The Trojan family honors and respects the USC sporting careers of those persons whose actions did not compromise their athletic program or the opportunities of future USC student-athletes. Accordingly, I have instructed the senior vice president for administration to remove athletic jerseys and murals displayed in recognition of O.J. Mayo and Reggie Bush by mid-August — before the incoming class of students moves on campus — from Heritage Hall, the Galen Center and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The university also will return Mr. Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trophy Trust in August.

Now, for what it’s worth, this does not mean that Reggie Bush is stripped of his 2005 Heisman trophy. That decision lies ultimately with the Downtown Athletic Club of New York.

This translates into USC being pissed off and wanting to distance itself as far as possible from the cheating scandals that have rocked them. Granted, they’re as much to blame as anyone else but from their perspective, that’s not the point.

They need to move on from this disaster and if they have to humiliate Bush and his Heisman trophy in the process, so be it.

Im guessing his book “Win Forever” is not about his first stint in the NFL but rather his glory days at USC. You know, the days when it was ok to openly have your Heisman trophy winner living in a house bought and paid for by agents?

Pete Carroll wins, carves forever in NYC [Rivals]

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that USC football will receive a two-year postseason ban along with the loss of athletic scholarships. The investigation, which has spanned four years centered on allegations against Reggie Bush and former basketball player OJ Mayo.

The NCAA, the governing body for collegiate sports, informed USC of its decision after a four-year investigation regarding allegations centered on former football player Reggie Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo. The NCAA could make its decision public as early as today.

Frankly, I think USC got lucky. Considering the allegations they most likely ignored like Joe McKnight cruising around town in a businessman’s car, it could have been worse. Had USC been named SMU for example, they would have received the death penalty. Alas, we all know the NCAA only drops the hammer on schools that won’t affect their bottom line.

I will give them credit though in this respect. This investigation only took them four years. I was thinking they were waiting for Reggie Bush to die and then claim “Well, we never had time to question him”.

Now that would have been a smart tactic. Speaking of smart tactics, Pete Carroll sure skipped town at the right time.

NCAA hands USC two-year bowl game ban, major scholarship reduction in football {LA Times}

Trust me, I wish this was a piece from The Onion but sadly, its not.

Thursday evening Kiffin received a verbal commitment from 13-year old wunderkind quarterback David Sills of Bear, Del.

Too young?

Not according to his personal coach Steve Clarkson, who has mentored some of the game’s best quarterbacks including current USC starter Matt Barkley.

“His skill set is off the chart,” Clarkson said. “I’ve never seen anyone at his age do what he’s been able to do.”

Allow me a moment to digest some of this information…

At 13 you are in the 8th grade right? Well, let me tell you a quick story. I was a pretty good athlete when I was young, even started on the 7th grade basketball team, played football, ran track….Did the things a normal kid in middle school does.

And then right around the age of 14, I saw my first pair of real boobies. No, not the ones in that porn I lifted from my friends dad….real, live boobies.

Let’s just say my focus turned elsewhere after that. In what started as a promising athletic career quickly transformed into horny, sex-driven teenager.

Fast forward a decade or so later and I’m an overweight, out of shape blogger.

So my advice to quarterback extraordinaire David Sills, unless you want to end up like me, keep the boobies at bay. They’re more powerful thank you think.

Unless you were passed out from overeating on Thanksgiving, you missed an exciting weekend in sports. And by exciting we mean, damn, Tiger’s wife went Chris Brown on him…But we’ll get to that later.

Every Monday on Guyism, we take a look at some of the worst blunders, coaching moves, and general athlete douchebaggery of the weekend and give you the reader a chance to vote.

Today, we look at USC coach Pete Carroll and UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel.

Usually, we like to examine two completely separate incidents of douchebaggery but this one was too juicy to pass up. With less than a minute left in the USC-UCLA rivalry and USC up two touchdowns, the game seemed well in hand. USC kneeled the ball and everyone thought the game was over. But then, for some odd reason, Rick Neuheisel called timeout. Far be it for me to speculate as to why he called the timeout knowing his team couldn’t win the game, but I digress. Coming out the timeout USC called for a deep pass that resulted in a touchdown. Pete Carroll, who just recently questioned Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford Cardinals running up the score on him, didn’t mind rubbing some salt in the Bruins’ wounds.

But that’s not why Pete Carroll is a candidate for BWD. Its the riled up celebration he started after the touchdown. Similar to that of a little league team taunting an opposing team’s pitcher after slapping him around.

Rick Neuheisel looked stunned at the pass call but he’s got no one else to blame but himself. USC was content on a 2 touchdown victory and was ready to go home.

Two incidents, same game. Who’s the bigger culprit?

You know, what is it about these USC football players? They seems cocky as hell. Like they don’t have a care in the world and that there are any repercussions for their actions.

Well Rey, be forewarned. If I ever see you disrespect my girl Erin again, we’re going to have problems. You know, like, me and you, and a cheap shot to the balls when you’re not looking.
