Manchester United star Wayne Rooney’s up and down year continues. After “playfully” celebrating a goal last week against Chelsea, Rooney looked at a nearby television camera and unleashed several f-bombs. The Football Association did not take kindly to the cuss filled celebration and gave Rooney a 2-game suspension. It was upheld after appeal yesterday which means he’ll have to sit out the semi-final match of the FA Cup. Considering how well he’s been playing for them in recent weeks, it’s a huge loss.

It’s not often that Southern University makes the news. But when your athletic director decides to land some hoes, you can bet it’s front page material. Greg LaFleur, AD of Southern was fired Wednesday following an arrest Sunday night on a misdemeanor prostitution count in downtown Houston. The university released this statement, “”given the circumstances, I think it would be difficult for the university to move forward with Mr. LaFleur as the head of the athletic program,” the chancellor said. Apparently, bedding hookers does not make one a solid role model.

A tradition unlike any other was kicked off this morning by none other than two of the all-time greats in Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. The 75th Masters ceremonial tee shot occurred early this morning with both men pounding shots into the fairway. Between the two, the green jacket has been won a miraculous ten times.

When the Boston Red Sox were swept over the weekend by the Texas Rangers, there was some cause for concern but certainly not panic—not yet at least. The Rangers were the defending AL champions and they weren’t pushovers. However, getting beat by the lowly Indians two games in a row and running your record to 0-5, yea, I can hear the groans in Boston now. After all the money that was spent in the off-season and with many picking them to win it all, this isn’t exactly how they wanted to kick off the season.

The economy has hit the state of Michigan harder than any other area in the United States. So when the Detroit Pistons offered free season tickets to 50 die hard fans, you’d think people would jump at the chance. And while more than 300 people registered, only 11 showed up for auditions yesterday. A poor showing by both the Pistons PR/Marketing team and the fans themselves.

Apparently, a $75,000 fine was enough for the Steelers James Harrison to consider retirement. The NFL levied the fine two days ago and yesterday, Harrison was excused from practice as he contemplated whether he could play “in that kind of environment”. Oh yea but Josh Cribbs, don’t worry, I’m sure some Tylenol will fix that killer headache he has.

Lance Berkman has played 717 games at first base in his career. After taking a tumble last night, he almost didn’t make it to 718 this year. Filling in for the Yankees’ Mark Texiera who is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, Berkman wiped out and hit his head chasing a foul ball last night. Thankfully for Yankees fan and well, Berkman, he was able to somehow finish the game with the aid of smelling salts and some new spikes.

Manchester United star forward Wayne Rooney has made it clear he does not want to stay with the team. Despite his success along with the teams, Rooney said he wanted assurances from the club that they would still go out and attract the top players in the world. After losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in the offseason, ManU did not make an attempt to replace them with high profile players. Evidently, the $258 million the team held in cash reserves is being used for uh, more important things.

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has not lost a bout in six years but that’s not enough proof of his dominance from his rivals. Derek Chisora, who is fighting Klitschko in December said that he’s not impressed by the champion. “The best thing about IBF, IBO and WBO champion Klitschko is his ring entrance”, said Chisora. Color me shocked–some smack talk before a boxing bout. Wake me up when the heavyweight championship actually means something again.

Grams of oxycontin Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart was in possession of when he was arrested at a gas station for causing a disturbance. The Anvil, a former WWE wrestler, also seems to be a connoisseur of other drugs as he was also in possession of methadone. The Hart Foundation has not released a statement yet on the arrest, although Neidhart will more than likely be finding another tag team partner in prison.

Price that English soccer star Wayne Rooney paid for a prostitute. The scandal, of course, is extremely popular with the British tabloids. The Daily Mail ran pictures of scantily clad hooker Jennifer Thompson in their paper yesterday. They also ran this hilarious comment about Thompson from her friends, “…Jennifer was a party animal and was regularly in hospital getting her stomach pumped after drinking too much during her teens”. She sounds like a hoot.

Votes UM received for the top 25 after their win over UConn on Saturday–mostly because of the man pictured here. Denard Robinson’s spectacular performance has been the talk of the nation the last few days, even vaulting him atop early Heisman lists. Hopefully he does not suffer the same fate as teammate Tate Forcier who received the same kind of attention after his first start last year. Forcier is currently 3rd string and seriously pondering a transfer telling reporters on Saturday, “all you need to know is I’m out”.

Last night, ESPN continued with their 30 for 30 series with a Tyson/Tupac documentary–and it was their worst effort thus far. “One Night in Vegas” was extremely disappointing and essentially, didn’t tell the viewers anything they didn’t already know about Tupac getting shot. It was made worse with a series of strange raps done by a man who was supposed to resemble the dead rapper. All in all, a garbage production.

The money Shaq said he could have gotten from the Pistons for a one-year deal. No word on whether Detroit actually wanted him or if even they asked for the center’s services. Considering that you’re only paying him for about 40 games of work these days, not sure it’s really in anyone’s financial interests.

Trevor Hoffman recorded his 600th save last night. An astounding feat and certainly one that will garner him serious consideration for the Hall of Fame one day. Sadly, his record will not stand for long as Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is only 45 saves behind him.

The NY times released a scathing story about top Kentucky recruit Enes Kanter who reportedly received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits while he played for a professional team in Turkey. If true, Kanter will more than likely never step on the floor for the Wildcats. Oddly enough, the 100k he received would only make him the 6th highest paid player on the Kentucky squad.
