Greeting cards think emails are for fags

In today’s increasingly paperless society, one man overlooked is the Greeting Card Maker. With his cards with kitties saying punny things to you to celebrate some occasion, will he be forgotten? Probably. But they’re trying not to be.

“How can a working mom get 8 hours sleep?” is the question on the cover of a greeting card newly on the store racks.

No need to open the card to find out. “Divide it into two nights” is the punch line, delivered right beneath the cover drawing of a half-awake mother besieged by three disheveled toddlers and a dog eager to be walked.

While the paper card market is declining, it is still five times as large as the e-card market, according to the Greeting Card Association, a trade group. Ninety percent of United States households still buy paper greeting cards, and the average household buys 30 a year, the association said.

“Women told us that everyday life had funnier situations than anything that is made up,” said Beth Murdoch, director of funny cards for American Greetings, who led the company’s six-month look at contemporary humor.

WOW two nights! That’s uproarious! You housefraus are right, nothing funnier than real life situations! I’m a mom and I don’t sleep…oh what a funny life I lead.

What a prestigious job title: Director of Funny Cards. She works very closely with the Assistant Director of Sh*tty Puns and the Sr. Manager of Drawings of that Old Lady Who’s Always on All of the American Greeting Cards. The greeting card business is an interesting one.

The article also seems to imply that greeting cards will be more customizable and available through social networking sites. Because why would I leave a Facebook or MySpace wall post when I can go through the labor of buying, signing, and mailing a card? It’s just more practical!
