Have we become socially inept?

A. Isaac Senior Editor

A friend called me the other day and said “hey, havent talked to you in awhile”. At first, I thought, “wait, you’re crazy, I talked to you at least 4-5 times last week”.

Well, that is, we talked on Google Chat. And then reality smacked me in the face.

We now live in a society where conversations are virtually meaningless.

Need to reach someone at work? Email
Need to tell something important to your buddy? Text Message
Want to talk to a relative in another country? Skype, AIM, GCHAT

We want to avoid conversations at every turn. We feel more brave typing something than simply picking up the phone to talk to them.

Personally for me, I informed a large number of my friends about having cancer by Email. And honestly, it seemed like a normal thing to do. How else would I tell them?

Go to the local pub and tell them over a few beers?

Nah, too difficult.

We live in a convenient society. We live in a “right now” world. We live and die by the technology we use.

How does this effect us in the future? Ten years from now, a new generation will hit the job markets. Can you imagine a work staff meeting with a college grad who probably has never spoke in front of a group of people before?

It will sound like a foreign language.

Well anyways, thats my .02.
