Indiana vs. MSU Preview

History

MSU leads the all-time series 38-15-2. In their last 10 meetings, MSU is 8-2. In fact, even though MSU has struggled against most of the Big10, they have still had success against lowly Indiana.

The winner of this game receives the Old Brass Spittoon. A truly ugly trophy that was first awarded in 1950. According to wikipedia, “It’s believed that the spittoon has been around since both universities were established”

1987

That year, Indiana and MSU played for the rights to represent the BigTen in the Rose Bowl. Perles’ Spartans destroyed the Hoosiers that day 27-3. In the aftermath of post-game celebrations, Bill Mallory, coach of the Hoosiers visited the Spartan lockerroom to give them a message.

2006

Last year, Indiana smoked the Spartans 46-21 behind the “Lewis and Hardy” show. James Hardy went on to score 4 tds that day. This game also marked the end of the Johnelle era as he was fired 4 days later.

2005

A game the Spartans handled from start to finish 46-15. Also, one of their few conference wins in the last couple of years.

Prediction

The Spartans are reeling from consecutive losses to Wisconsin and Northwestern. As mentioned here before, it really wasnt the fact they lost, but how they have lost the last two games. Bad playcalling and boneheaded plays late have cost them.

If there was ever a must win in the middle of a coaches first season, this is it. Lose tomorrow and the Spartans are facing a daunting task in Columbus the week after. 4-4 is an extreme likelihood.

Kellen Lewis is one of the better qbs in the BigTen and makes plays with his feet when the time calls for it.

And IU deserves credit for beating Iowa and Minnesota but truthfully, their opponents have been less than stellar. Their only loss is to Illinois in a close affair in Bloomington.

I have faith that Dantonio will right the ship this week on homecoming. He is a good coach and will make adjustments from the disaster of last week.

MSU-31
IU-21
