A father and son duo were running a brilliant elevator part-stealing side business. Problems arose when they gave a very slick confession which thoroughly amused me.
A pair of Walton County deputies arrested a father and son for stealing elevator parts near Mossy Head on Sunday night.
The deputies stopped for a vehicle check on a 1999 Toyota truck parked near the intersection of State Road 285 and Green Acres Road about 7:30 p.m. Samuel Austin Chapman, 25, told the deputies he was waiting on a friend to “bring him some parts,” according to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office news release. Although Chapman had a handgun, he was allowed to leave the scene after a records check.
Less than an hour later, the same deputies pulled into a motel along State Road 285. They were shining a spotlight during a check of the area and noticed two legs underneath a stairwell, according to the release.
Stephen James Chapman, 51, emerged and said, “OK. You got me. We were stealing elevator parts.”
