Oregon Trail is back!

There’s no question about what video game was the greatest invention of all-time when it first bust on the cholera-filled scene: Oregon Trail. The ultimate “reward” for being in school (and *gasp* a computer lab, if you kids remember those at all), you got to wrangle up a group of settlers and take them out west, desperately trying to avoid various diseases you’d never heard of while hunting bears and stuff.

Now it’s back and it’s on Facebook*.

The first thing that pops out about this video (and the one for Carmen Sandiego, below) is that things are very, very different. Like, there are more than 12 pixels on the whole screen. And it’s not one-dimensional. But it’s all good because that’s the evolution of technology.

My only fear is that it’ll play out like NBA Live, which, while awesome, can never live up to NBA Live 2000, the single greatest video game of all-time. That’s an argument for another day, but you get the point — anyway, Where in the World IS Carmen Sandiego? (A: Right here.)

Same “complaint” applies to this version, if only because our nostalgic memories always embellish, well, pretty much everything. And the new versions of games almost never live up to the hype.

Of course, that’s coming from someone who’s nearing 30 and not the 12-year-olds it’s intended to make less stupid.

*See, this is one of those awesome things about the Book I was mentioning earlier.**

**Yes, I’ll stop writing about Facebook at some point, I swear***.

***But srsly: OREGON TRAIL!!!1
