VIDEO: Capcom giveth and Capcom taketh away

Say hello to another Resident Evil, and say goodbye to yet another Mega Man.

As noted recently, another RE is on its way, and made mention how it was by former SOCOM developers. Well, here’s your first taste, and it certainly looks that way…

Capcom in recent years have been mindful of the Western audience, because that’s where all the money is, and have tried to shift their games to palatable to Americans and the like. Hey, Americans likes zombies, but also malls, hence Dead Rising.

So I guess it only makes sense to take Resident Evil in a new direction, that being a (seemingly) squad based, first person shooter. And again, I wonder if it’ll try to do anything too wacky, like have you mow down a bunch of innocent civilians (remember, you are part of the bad guys). Though given all the controversy after part 5, they might be playing it nice and safe. But on that note, I wonder how the whole “you get to kill famous faces in the franchise” will ultimately play out. Hence why I believe it’ll be a non-canonical side-story.

In other news, Mega Man Universe, has just been cancelled…

No real big loss really. I mean, the idea of a Mega Man MMO is still pretty strange, plus when the biggest thing a game has going for it is the ability to play as the crappy box art version of a character, things were never looking all that rosy to begin with. I also have to wonder if one main reason for the plug being pulled was because Keiji Inafune, the Japanese fellow in the video above, who btw created Mega Man, recently left the company. This also puts the future of the other Mega Man title that was on its way, Mega Man Legends 3 (which folks actually cared about), in serious doubt.

It’s also worth noting that Mega Man Universe is not the first console franchise to get a proposed MMO that never happened, with Shenmue Online being the most notable example, though I’m sure there’s plenty of others. Then you have Katamari Damacy Online, which actually did come out, but only in South Korea…
