VIDEO: Witness the unholy union of 8-bit and heavy metal, sorta

In music video form at least.

Gaming has always been a source of inspiration for musicians, though usually amongst rappers. I personally can’t remember the last time metal had anything to do with Nintendo (unless there was a particular episode of Metalocalypse I’m completely blanking on here). So kudos to the band Becoming The Archetype for being the first!

Okay, that’s not true; for years folks have been doing metal covers of Metroid tunes, everything from the NES original, to the Prime. They call themselves, appropriately enough, Metroid Metal, and here’s an example…

UPDATE: Okay, it’s been pointed out to me by a pal that there are other notable examples of metal combined with video games. Like Horse the Band…

Not bad at all. Then you have DragonForce, which I can’t believe I forgot about, since they take their name from a favorite Sega Saturn title of mine. Actually I do, because aside from Through The Fire And Flames, which sounds like something from a JRPG, the rest of the stuff (at least from what I’ve heard) isn’t very game-y. Not to say Becoming The Archetype is either, but at least their music video is.

Back yeah, gaming has simply been an ingrained part of rap and hip-hop since practically day one. One of the earlier examples that comes to mind are those Missy Elliot music vids that featured Mega Man bosses. Though here’s a clip that goes even further back, cira 1993, of the Wu Tang Clan pimping Super Game Boy. Which was banned “banned from networks for being too ill.”

Though my most favorite recent example would have to be underground sensation Lil ‘B. The dude simply loves video games!
